FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A strong second-quarter comeback propelled the University of Iowa women’s basketball team to its sixth consecutive victory, 77-64, over Charlotte on Thursday in the second round of the Puerto Rico Challenge at Cardinal Gibbons High School. While the Hawkeyes (6-0 overall) keep posting win after win, junior center Megan Gustafson keeps her remarkable statistics streak alive. For the sixth this this season and 33rd time in her career, Gustafson posted a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. She was 11 of 16 from the field and for the season is shooting 69.2 percent.

Charlotte fell to 2-3. The 49ers are coached by former Hawkeye Cara Consuegra. Iowa sophomore Makenzie Meyer scored 17 points and dished out seven assists, junior Tania Davis added 11 points and five assists. Both Meyer and Davis made three 3-point field goals. The Hawkeyes missed all six of their 3-point attempts in the first 10 minutes, while Charlotte was 4 of 6 from distance. The winds of change occurred in the second quarter: Iowa was 3 of 3 from beyond the arc and the 49ers were 0 for 3.

Iowa is off to its best start since beginning 7-0 in 2010. After trailing by as many as 12, the Hawkeyes outscored Charlotte by 15 in the second quarter to take a lead into halftime. Iowa registered 26 assists on 32 field goals. Meyer (seven), Doyle (six), and Davis (five) accounted for 18 of those assists.  The Hawkeyes get to enjoy the 80-degree temperatures in Fort Lauderdale on Friday before returning to the court against Elon on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. (CT). The Phoenix are 4-0 this season and play Alabama on Friday.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Juwan McCloud hit the go-ahead driving layup with 1:08 left to help Northern Iowa hold off North Carolina State 64-60 on Thursday in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals. Isaiah Brown added two clinching free throws with 3.1 seconds left for the Panthers (5-1). Northern Iowa trailed by seven midway through the second half. The cold-shooting Wolfpack (5-1) were coming off an upset victory over No. 2 Arizona on Wednesday night.

Finally McCloud beat Braxton Beverly off the dribble for the 60-58 lead. Then, after two missed shots by the Wolfpack’s Allerik Freeman, Klint Carlson drove by Abdul-Malik Abu with 13.7 seconds left to make it a two-possession game. Omer Yurtseven scored on a stickback to close the gap to two before Brown’s free throws sealed it. Tywhon Pickford had 18 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Panthers. Yurtseven had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead N.C. State.

The Panthers won their opener against SMU primarily on the strength of a 21-2 first-half run before holding on for a 61-58 win. This time they hung close and held the Wolfpack to 31 percent shooting after halftime while limiting their turnovers (11) against N.C. State’s pressure. The Panthers will face No. 5 Villanova on Friday in the championship game.

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) — Jordan Bohannon made six 3-pointers and scored 30 points, Tyler Cook added 29 points and Iowa snapped a two-game losing streak at the Cayman Islands Classic with a 95-85 victory over UAB on Wednesday.

The sophomores set career highs in scoring to help Iowa win the seventh-place game. Cook hit 8 of 11 field goals and 13 of 16 free throws in topping his previous high of 24 points. Bohannon was 9-of-12 shooting, including 6 of 8 from distance, and sank all six of his free throws to best his 25 points in Iowa’s final game last season.

Luka Garza added 14 points and seven rebounds for Iowa (4-2), while Isaiah Moss scored 12.

Chris Cokley led UAB (3-3) with 25 points and eight rebounds. He made 7 of 8 free throws as the Blazers only missed two of 18 attempts. Nate Darling and Jalen Perry each added 13 points.

(AP) — King McClure had 19 points, Terry Maston made a series of big baskets down the stretch and No. 22 Baylor rallied to beat Creighton 65-59 in the Hall of Fame Classic title game. Maston finished with 15 points and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. had 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Bears in earning tournament MVP honors.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State quarterback Jesse Ertz will need surgery on his ailing knee and miss the remainder of the season, while backup Alex Delton remains sidelined after sustaining two concussions. That means Skylar Thompson will again start Saturday against Iowa State. He led the Wildcats to an upset of Oklahoma State last weekend in Stillwater.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — If Iowa can make a few runs at the Big Ten title in the years to come, 2017 might be looked upon as a necessary rebuild. For now, this season feels like a major disappointment. The Hawkeyes have lost two straight games, guaranteeing they will have a losing record in the Big Ten for the first time in five years. They visit Nebraska on Friday in the regular-season finale.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Aaron Holiday got a scooping layup to go just before the buzzer, giving No. 23 UCLA a 72-70 victory over Wisconsin in the third-place game of the Hall of Fame Classic. Holiday led a charge down the stretch to get the Bruins in the game. Then, he drove past the Badgers’ Ethan Happ in the final seconds for the winning basket.

Denison-Schleswig got 20 points from their star guard Alex Mohr on their way to a 81-54 rout of the Atlantic Trojans on Tuesday night. The home opener for the Atlantic girls wasn’t a smooth one as Denison raced out to 24-13 lead by the end of the first quarter and pushed it out to a 43-26 advantage at half.

The game really got away from the Trojans in the third quarter as the Monarchs outscored them 23-13 in the quarter. Transition defense was a tough spot for Atlantic all night long and Coach Kelly Juhl said “We were just downright bad in that category tonight. I think we know what we are supposed to be doing but the execution just wasn’t there and we let them get behind us too much.”

Sarah Heilesen dropped in 14 points for Denison and Jazlyn Beeck had a very strong performance with 15 points and a number of rebounds.

Ally Anderson was the leading scorer for Atlantic with 16 points. and Baylee Newell and McKenzie Waters both had 10.

The Monarchs improve to 1-0 and and Trojans fall to 1-1 on the season. The Trojans have ten days off before they host St. Albert on December 1st.

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) — Freshman David Jenkins Jr. scored a season-high 23 points, including big baskets down the stretch, and South Dakota State fended off Iowa 80-72 in a consolation-bracket semifinal at the Cayman Islands Classic on Tuesday.

Tevin King, a junior, added a career-high 16 points with seven rebounds and five steals. Reed Tellinghuisen scored 15 points and Mike Daum 10. The Jackrabbits, preseason favorites in the Summit League, shot 44 percent but were 10 of 20 from the arc and 16 of 19 from the free-throw line.

Isaiah Moss’ basket got the Hawkeyes within 66-64 with 3½ minutes left but Jenkins’ hit a 3-pointer and converted a three-point play, and King added a layup with two minutes left for a 74-66 lead. The Jackrabbits made 6 of 8 free throws from there to hold off the Hawkeyes.

The Jackrabbits (4-2) led 36-33 at halftime but Moss tied it with a 3-pointer in the first minute of the second half. Jenkins gave the Jackrabbits the lead for good at 54-52 with a basket with 12 minutes to go. South Dakota State gradually built an eight-point lead with 8½ minutes left but then went nearly four minutes without scoring with Ahmad Wagner drawing the Hawkeyes, 63-62, within a point with a 3-pointer before King ended the drought with a layup and free throw.

The victory was South Dakota State’s fourth in 11 meetings with Iowa and seventh against a Power Five school since joining the Summit League in 2007.

Moss led Iowa (3-2) with 18 points, Jack Nunge added 14 and Tyler Cook and Wagner 11 apiece. Luka Garza grabbed 10 rebounds while Jordan Bohannon dished seven assists. The Hawkeyes shot 51 percent but commited 15 turnovers that led to 25 points.

South Dakota State will play for fifth place on Wednesday while Iowa will try to end a two-game losing streak in the game for seventh place. We’ll have the Iowa game on KJAN with a pregame at 10:00am and Tip-off at 11:00am.
