Iowa loses CB Jackson, C Daniels and QB Wiegers

Sports

January 5th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa confirmed the departures of cornerback Josh Jackson, center James Daniels and reserve quarterback Tyler Wiegers. The Hawkeyes say in a release that Jackson and Daniels intend to declare for the NFL draft, while Eastern Michigan announced this week that Wiegers is joining its program as a graduate transfer.

Jackson led the nation with eight interceptions and 26 passes defended and earned consensus first-team All-America honors in his first season as a starter. Daniels might be as big of a loss as Jackson. Daniels started 25 games in three seasons at Iowa, anchoring a line that struggled at times in 2016.

Wiegers lost a tight competition with sophomore Nate Stanley in the offseason and then watched as Stanley threw for 26 TDs and just six interceptions. The Hawkeyes went 8-5 this season and beat Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Iowa freshman Spencer Lee to compete against Michigan State

Sports

January 5th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The redshirt is coming off of Spencer Lee and he will compete at 125-pounds tonight (Friday night), when the Iowa wrestling team hosts Michigan State. Iowa’s prize recruit had ACL surgery on his right knee in March and has yet to compete in a varsity match. (click on the left side of the audio bar to hear comments)

That’s Iowa coach Tom Brands who says decisions like this are made all the time but they don’t get as much attention.

Brands says Lee will be able to handle all the added attention.

Charles’ 24 leads No. 13 Maryland women past No. 18 Iowa

Sports

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Kaila Charles had 12 of her 24 points in the first quarter, Blair Watson had nine of her 13 in the fourth quarter and No. 13 Maryland took control early to defeat No. 18 Iowa 80-64 in a Big Ten showdown on Thursday night. The win is Maryland’s 12th straight and ended Iowa’s seven game winning streak.

Charles had six points in an early 14-3 run that gave the Terrapins (14-2, 3-0) the lead for good and four more in a late 10-0 run that helped them build a 31-17 advantage after the first quarter. Maryland shot 62 percent (13 of 21) in the first 10 minutes while Iowa was 6 of 18.

Any hope of a late charge by the Hawkeyes (14-2, 2-1) was dashed by Watson, who drilled all three of her 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Charles also had 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and Maryland only had one turnover at the half and three after three quarters before finishing with seven.

Megan Gustafson had her 15th double-double of the season for Iowa with 15 points and 15 rebounds and Kathleen Doyle had the first of her career with 13 points and a career-high 11 assists. However, the Hawkeyes had 23 turnovers that cost them 29 points.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Natalie Chou had 17 points, Kalani Brown had another double-double and the No. 6 Baylor women overwhelmed Iowa State 89-49. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have placed cornerback Phillip Gaines on injured reserve, possibly ending his time in Kansas City. Gaines dislocated his elbow last weekend.
