Chiefs make roster moves ahead of playoff game vs Titans

Sports

January 2nd, 2018 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs put wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas and running back Akeem Hunt on injured reserve and added wide receiver Marcus Kemp and running back C.J. Spiller to the roster on Tuesday.

Kansas City is preparing for its AFC wild-card playoff game against Tennessee on Saturday.

Thomas broke his leg during the Chiefs’ victory in Denver on Sunday, while Hunt left the game with an ankle injury. Both have provided depth this season, especially on special teams.

Kemp has spent the season on the practice squad, while Spiller has been on and off the roster several times. The veteran running back’s presence is especially helpful with Charcandrick West, the primary backup to Kareem Hunt, who has been dealing with an illness.

West was inactive last week, but participated in Tuesday’s practice.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Dylan Osetkowski scored a career-high 25 points with seven 3-pointers — including the go-ahead bucket with 33.5 seconds left in overtime — and Texas beat Iowa State 74-70 on Monday night to improve to 3-0 on the road. Mohamed Bamba had 10 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks for the Longhorns (10-4, 1-1 Big 12), who have also beaten VCU and Alabama away from Austin this season. Bamba blocked Cameron Lard under the basket with two minutes left in overtime, and Matt Coleman beat Nick Weiler-Babb off the dribble and got a reverse layup under Lard to put Texas ahead 67-63 with 1:41 to go. Iowa State responded though, as Lard and Jackson scored in the paint to tie it at 67.

But as he had all night, Osetkowski pulled up from the elbow and calmly put Texas ahead by 3. Bamba redirected a Donovan Jackson floater, and Coleman iced it at the line. Jackson scored 24 points to lead Iowa State (9-4, 0-2), which is off to its first 0-2 start in league play since 2010-11. Lard added a career-best 21 points with 16 rebounds.

Iowa State plays at Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) — Patrick Mahomes II is impressive in his first NFL start, leading the Kansas City Chiefs past the Denver Broncos 27-24. Rookie Kareem Hunt scored on a 35-yard touchdown run on his only carry to secure the NFL rushing title. The Broncos wrapped up one of their most disappointing seasons ever, putting more pressure on GM John Elway as he evaluates QBs and rookie head coach Vance Joseph.

DENVER (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs got a glimpse of their quarterback future with the debut of Patrick Mahomes. Now it’s back to the present with Alex Smith starting in the playoffs. But the Chiefs now know Mahomes can step in with little worries after leading the team to a winning field goal during a 27-24 win over the Denver Broncos.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Marcus Foster scored 18 points to lead five Creighton players in double figures and the No. 25 Bluejays beat cold-shooting Providence 83-64. Toby Hegner matched his season high with 15 points for the Bluejays. They bounced back from a road loss to Seton Hall in their conference opener and beat the Friars for the first time in four tries in Omaha. Freshman center Nate Watson led Providence with a season-high 20 points.

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Reed Timmer scored 20 points and Drake held off a Southern Illinois rally for a 70-67 win. Nick McGlynn added 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Drake, which led by as much as 16 points in the first half but had to scramble as Southern Illinois rallied late in the second half to pull within two points with under a minute left.

UNDATED (AP) — It might have been the most satisfying 8-5 season in the history of college football. Iowa State had gone five years without reaching a bowl game and seven without a winning season. It capped an exhilarating 2017 by beating Memphis 21-20 on Saturday in the Liberty Bowl. It was the fourth bowl win for the Cyclones. They also beat three ranked opponents for the first time.

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Darrell Brown scored 24 points, Nate Kennell scored 14 and Donte Thomas grabbed 10 rebounds and Bradley used the second half to pull away from Northern Iowa 72-53. The Panthers led 33-32 at halftime before Bradley exploded with 22-3 run to put the Braves ahead, 61-45 with 7:49 to play. Brown buried three 3s and a jumper during the run and Elijah Childs added a 3 and a jumper.

Mahomes leads Chiefs past Broncos 27-24 in 1st start

Sports

December 31st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Patrick Mahomes II made both his first NFL start and his first NFL relief appearance a success Sunday, leading the Kansas City Chiefs past the Denver Broncos 27-24 on Harrison Butker’s 30-yard field goal as time expired. Starting in place of Alex Smith, Mahomes handed off a 24-10 lead to No. 3 QB Tyler Bray midway through the fourth quarter but came back with the score tied at 24 and less than three minutes left.

He drove the Chiefs 67 yards in 11 plays for the game-winning field goal that sent the Chiefs (10-6) to their fifth straight win over the Broncos (5-11). Mahomes became the first quarterback drafted by the Chiefs to win a game for them since Todd Blackledge in 1987. He threw for 284 yards on 24-of-35 passing with no touchdowns and an interception.

Kansas City moved up 17 spots to take the Texas Tech standout quarterback last April, ending three decades of avoiding quarterbacks in the first round. He watched all year as Smith had the best season of his 13-year career, throwing for 4,042 yards to go with 26 touchdowns and just five interceptions.

Chiefs backup punt returner De’Anthony Thomas was carted off after injuring his right leg on the final play of the first quarter. He was dragged down by Marcus Rios after backtracking to field Riley Dixon’s punt at his 5. CB Phillip Gaines was knocked out with an elbow injury just before halftime.

The Chiefs turn their attention to the wild-card round of the AFC playoffs, where the Chiefs are seeking their first playoff win at Arrowhead Stadium in their history.
