Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “Good to be back on the course after the weather this weekend.  I know our guys were ready to get back to some meets and competition.  Started off with the sun out and a little wind.  As the round continued, it got colder and windier. Today wasn’t our day.  We have a lot of work to do yet.  Ben and Matt has some struggles.  Hole 7 got Ben today.  Matt just had several bogies that he needed to get pars. Cyle also struggled at times.  Just couldn’t get the putter going.  Austin continues to shoot his normal game.  Hopefully we can get him a little lower.  Mason had struggles today.  Putter wasn’t working and didn’t hit driver at all.  Braden has some work to do yet as well.  Good to see Tate and Drey get below 50.  Hopefully that continues into the rest of this week. Harley is continuing to get better.  Next match is Thursday.  Hopefully we get back to the scores that we can shoot.”

CHICAGO (AP) — Adam Wainwright outpitched Tyler Chatwood in frigid conditions at Wrigley Field, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 for their fifth consecutive victory. The gametime temperature was 35 degrees, and a 10 mph wind made it feel like 29. There were heaters on in each dugout, and the announced crowd of 35,103 bundled up in winter coats, hats and blankets.

TORONTO (AP) — Luke Maile singled down the right-field line with the bases loaded in the 10th inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays walked off with a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals to sweep a rare doubleheader at Rogers Centre. Toronto won the opener 11-3 and has swept all three doubleheaders at its retractable-roof stadium, which opened in 1989. Tyler Clippard worked a scoreless 10th for his 50th career victory.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The biggest hole Iowa will have to fill by September is at linebacker, where three multi-year starters have graduated and are preparing for a shot at the NFL. The Hawkeyes have gotten some clarity in the middle of their defense this spring. Defensive coordinator Phil Parker says Nick Niemann, Amani Jones and Aaron Mends have put themselves in position for starting jobs as spring workouts wrap up this week with an open practice Friday at Kinnick Stadium.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Tim Miles has been given a one-year contract extension through 2020-21. The Huskers were 22-11 and played in the National Invitation Tournament this past season. Their 13-5 record in Big Ten play was good for a tie for fourth place. Athletic director Bill Moos said last season’s performance merited the contract extension.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs began their offseason program in earnest, though quarterback Patrick Mahomes II has been at it for a while. The second-year pro is taking over following the trade of Alex Smith to Washington, and already he’s taken on a big leadership role by gathering his skill position teammates for impromptu workouts at local high schools.

CHICAGO (AP) — The series opener between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals was postponed because of poor weather, Monday. With light snow falling and the temperature around 30 degrees, the game was postponed about six hours before the scheduled first pitch. It will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on July 21.

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have postponed their series opener against Kansas City because of chunks of ice crashing down from the nearby CN Tower following a weekend of freezing rain. The teams will play a doubleheader on Tuesday. It’s the first postponement at Rogers Centre since a game against the Royals was called off following a collision between two panels of the stadium’s moving roof on April 12, 2001.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A trial has been scheduled for an Iowa youth basketball coach who’s accused of secretly recording some of his players undressing. Federal court records say 42-year-old Greg Stephen has pleaded not guilty to knowingly transporting child pornography. His trial is scheduled to begin June 4.

NAIA votes to move to one division in basketball

Sports

April 17th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The NAIA Council of Presidents has voted to merge divisions for men’s and women’s basketball beginning in 2020. The NAIA has offered championships in division one and division two since 1992. Corey Westra is Commissioner of the Great Plains Athletic Conference which competes at the division two level.

The GPAC has enjoyed a run of success, especially in women’s basketball.

It also brings about a change in scholarships. Currently, division one teams may offer 11 scholarships in basketball and six for division two.

Basketball was the lone remaining sport in the NAIA offering multiple divisions. Football made a similar move two decades ago.

Westra says the plan is for 64-team tournament for the men and women. Graceland won the NAIA men’s division one tournament this past season.
