IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team fell, 10-2, to seventh-ranked Michigan on Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.  The loss evens the series at 1-1.

The Wolverines out-hit Iowa, 14-8, and the Hawkeyes committed a season-high four errors.

Iowa jumped out to a 2-0 run in the first courtesy of a two-run home run from junior Robert Neustrom.  After Tyler Cropley drew a two-out walk, Neustrom hit a 380-foot blast to right field, giving Iowa an early lead.

From there it was all Michigan.

The Wolverines tied the game in the second inning against Iowa starter Brady Schanuel.  Michigan loaded the bases before a fielding error allowing the first run to score.  The Wolverines tied the game at two on an Ako Thomas sacrifice fly.

Michigan took the lead for good in the in the third on a solo home run from Jesse Franklin.  The Wolverines tacked on two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth before putting the game out of reach with a three-run eighth.

Schanuel (5-6) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits over 3 1/3 innings.  The Wolverines roughed up reliever Grant Judkins to the tune of four runs on six hits.

Michigan starter Ben Dragani (5-0) earned the win, scattering five hits and allowing two runs over six innings.

The Hawkeyes (25-14, 8-7) will play a rubber match Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT).

The Missouri Valley Boys Golf Invitational was held on Saturday at the Logan-Missouri Valley Country Club. Logan-Magnolia came out on top of the field with a 337.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have selected Texas A&M safety Armani Watts in the fourth round of the NFL draft, making them 4-for-4 this year when it comes to picking players to help their porous defense. Kansas City selected Ole Miss pass rusher Breeland Speaks, Florida State defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi and Clemson linebacker Dorian O’Daniel on Day 1. The Chiefs did not have a first-round pick.

Watts was a four-year starter for the Aggies. He made 82 tackles with four interceptions and two forced fumbles as a senior, landing him third-team All-America honors. He fills another pressing need after the Chiefs released veteran safety Ron Parker this offseason, and with Eric Berry returning from a season-ending torn Achilles tendon.

Kansas City also has a sixth-round pick and two seventh-rounders later Saturday.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — World record-holder Kendra Harrison capped the Drake Relays on Saturday by winning the 100-meter hurdles for the third year in a row. Harrison, running in her first outdoor race of 2018, finished in a wind-aided 12.37 seconds to become the first athlete to win the event three times in a row since local favorite Lolo Jones won four straight from 2005-08.

Harrison faced little resistance, with Tobi Amusan finishing second in 12.61.

The men’s 100 race went to Isiah Young in 10.02. Canadian star Andre De Grasse, racing for the first time since tearing his right hamstring days before last summer’s world championships, was fourth with a time of 10.15. He said that was the fastest he’s run in a season opener.

BETTENDORF, Iowa (AP) — Work is nearly complete on a $50 million sports complex in eastern Iowa that includes soccer and baseball fields, hardwood courts and an entertainment center.

The new TBK Bank Sports Complex in Bettendorf sprawls across 76 acres, the Quad-City Times reported . It’s being developed by BettPlex LLC and its founder Doug Kratz.
The complex will open May 4 with a baseball tournament featuring more than 100 teams, said Kira Brabeck, marketing director for the complex. The bowling and entertainment center will open May 29, while the indoor sports complex and fitness center will open June 15.

BettPlex officials and the Build to Suit construction team visited nearly a dozen other sports facilities to get ideas about what the complex should include, Brabeck said.
The complex will offer league activities for children and adults in baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, basketball, bowling and flag football.

The area also features arcade games, laser tag, concessions and a bar and grill. Other development plans are also in progress that aims to bring new retail options, a gas station and a hotel to the area, said Mike Sampson, chief financial officer for the complex.

Complex officials expect the complex to draw more than 750,000 visitors annually.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team got a dominant outing from junior Nick Allgeyer to post a 4-2 victory over seventh-ranked Michigan, snapping the Wolverines’ 20-game winning streak in front of a season-high 1,632 fans Friday night at Duane Banks Field.

Allgeyer (5-3) went seven strong innings to earn his fifth victory and notch his 10th straight quality start. The southpaw scattered five hits, allowed one earned run, and tied a career-high with eight strikeouts.

“It was good to get back out there with warm weather,” said Allgeyer. “The fans were awesome today and they gave everyone a lot of energy. There was a little extra motivation with their 20-game win streak, but I just tried to not get too hyped up and at the end of the day you just have to get the job done.”

Iowa’s offense got going in the third inning when senior Matt Hoeg reached off a fielding error by Michigan third baseman Blake Nelson before advancing to second off a wild pitch. After a Chris Whelan fly out to right field moved Chris Whelan to third, junior Tanner Wetrich laced a first-pitch single to center field, giving Iowa a 1-0 lead.

The Hawkeyes pushed their lead to 4-0 lead with a three-run third inning.  Sophomore Lorenzo Elion started with a one-out single to left field before scoring on a double from sophomore Kyle Crowl. Hoeg followed with an RBI triple to center field to make the score 3-0 and junior Mitchell Boe’s RBI single stretched the lead to 4-0.

Michigan put two runs on the board, one in the fifth, off a two-out RBI single from Christian Bullock and another in the eighth on a Jesse Franklin sacrifice fly.  Iowa reliever Zach Daniels retired the Wolverines in order in the ninth for his fourth save.

Tommy Henry (7-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Wolverines. The sophomore allowed four runs off seven hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched for his shortest outing this season.

Game two of the series will begin at 2:05 p.m. (CT) Saturday at Banks Field.  Junior Brady Schanuel will take the hill for the Hawkeyes.
