Errthum’s 4 FGs spark Northern Iowa past Illinois St, 26-16

November 3rd, 2018 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Austin Errthum kicked four consecutive first-half field goals, the longest from 43-yards out, to stake Northern Iowa to a 19-3 halftime lead and spark the Panthers to a 26-16 win over Illinois State in a Missouri Valley Conference showdown Saturday.

Evans’ field goal sends Purdue past No. 19 Iowa 38-36

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Spencer Evans made a 25-yard field goal with 8 seconds left Saturday, giving Purdue a 38-36 upset over No. 19 Iowa and putting the Boilermakers back in the Big Ten’s West Division title hunt. David Blough threw three touchdown passes to Terry Wright and topped the 300-yard mark for the fifth time this season.

The Boilermakers (5-4, 4-2 Big Ten) have won five of their last six and beat their third ranked team this season — the first time they’ve achieved that feat since 2003 — to move within one game of division leader Northwestern.

The Hawkeyes (6-3, 3-3) lost their second straight road game despite Nate Stanley’s big day. The junior quarterback threw for 275 yards with one TD and ran for another but the conference’s No. 2 scoring defense allowed a season-high point total.

After watching their playoff aspirations vanish with last week’s loss at Penn State, the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten title hopes now likely faded away, too. Iowa probably will fall out of the Top 25 after losing in back-to-back weeks by a total of eight points.

Iowa hosts division-leading Northwestern next weekend.

Lawrence guides San Diego past Drake 27-10

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Anthony Lawrence passed for 227 yards and a touchdown and added two short TD runs to propel San Diego to a 27-10 victory over Drake in Pioneer Football League play on Saturday.
San Diego has now won a FCS-best 21 straight home games. The Toreros also have a 27-game win streak in PFL play and a 36-game win streak in conference home games. Lawrence ran it in from 2 yards out and scored on a 1-yard plunge to give the Toreros (7-2, 6-0) a 13-0 first-quarter lead. The Bulldogs (4-3, 3-2) got on the scoreboard when Jeran Proctor picked off Lawrence and raced 27 yards for a touchdown to make it 13-7. Terrence Smith scored on a 5-yard run late in the second quarter to push San Diego’s advantage to 20-7 at the half.

Lawrence capped the scoring for the Toreros with a 42-yard scoring strike to Michael Bandy just 3 minutes into the third quarter. Bandy, who leads the nation in receiving yards, finished with five catches for 70 yards. Drake managed only 40 yards rushing on 23 carries. Grant Kraemer completed just 16 of 47 passes for 214 yards with two picks. The Bulldogs became the first PFL team to hold San Diego under 36 points this season.

Lawsuit seeks to represent hundreds in Iowa coach abuse case

November 3rd, 2018 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A lawsuit seeking class-action status has been filed on behalf of hundreds of victims of a former Iowa youth basketball coach now facing 15 to 180 years in prison for sexually exploiting them. The lawsuit, which was filed Friday in state court by law firm Grefe & Sidney on behalf of an unnamed victim with the pseudonym John Doe, names former Iowa Barnstormers coach Greg Stephen, the Barnstormers organization and its supervising organization, the Amateur Athletic Union, as defendants.

It accuses Stephen of intruding on the privacy of more than 400 boys by secretly or deceptively recording them undressing, showering and performing sexually explicit acts. It also accuses the sports organizations of negligence by employing Stephen.

Stephen pleaded guilty last month to sexually exploiting minors and possessing and transporting child pornography. As part of the plea, he acknowledged that he secretly recorded players showering, posed as a girl on social media to trick boys into sending him sexually explicit images, and recorded himself fondling some boys while they slept. He hasn’t been sentenced yet.

Stephen’s arrest in March shocked the basketball community in Iowa, where he for years was a coach and co-director of the Adidas-sponsored traveling program for the state’s top youth players. The case has played out amid heightened awareness of sexual abuse in sports triggered by the arrest of disgraced gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who is serving decades in prison after hundreds of women and girls accused him of sexually assaulting them under the guise of medical treatment.

Purdy throws 3 TD passes as Iowa State routs Kansas, 27-3

Sports

November 3rd, 2018 by Ric Hanson

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Brock Purdy threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, two of them big-play strikes to Hakeem Butler, and Iowa State rolled to a 27-3 victory over Kansas on Saturday.
David Montgomery ran for 67 yards and Purdy added 53 more on the ground as the Cyclones (5-3, 4-2 Big 12) won their fourth straight, all since putting their freshman quarterback under center.
Purdy has thrown 12 touchdown passes and just two interceptions during the streak.

The Jayhawks’ Peyton Bender was just 19 of 40 for 185 yards, though he had several passes dropped, including one for a certain TD by Stephon Robinson early in the game. Khalil Herbert added 91 yards on the ground in what amounted to the only bright spot for coach David Beaty’s team.
Now, the calls for his job are sure to grow louder.

The Jayhawks (3-6, 1-5) upset TCU last week to give Beaty a week’s reprieve, but his team looked woefully unprepared Saturday. Substitution mistakes, four failed fourth downs and a myriad of other issues made for an ugly showing in front of a sparse crowd made up of about 50 percent Iowa State fans.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa guard Kathleen Doyle broke her left hand during practice and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks. The 13th-ranked Hawkeyes say that Doyle, a preseason All-Big Ten selection, fractured the third and fourth metacarpals in her non-shooting hand. Doyle, a junior, averaged 11.1 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.7 rebounds in 30 games last season, and she led the Big Ten with 7.5 assists per game in conference action last season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — After a pair of wins, Nebraska’s confidence is high for its matchup with reeling Ohio State. The No. 8 Buckeyes had had a bye week to stew over the improbable Oct. 20 loss to Purdue when their running game and defense were inexplicably absent. Nebraska is improving but will come into Ohio Stadium an 18-point underdog. The Huskers are led by a freshman dual-threat quarterback and senior tailback who have help revive their running game.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Both TCU and K-State have to win at least three of their last four games just to be bowl eligible. The two Big 12 teams play each other Saturday. Both are 3-5. TCU has never had a four-game losing streak in Gary Patterson’s 18 seasons as head coach. The Frogs have lost three in a row and five of six. Kansas State is coming off a 51-14 loss at Oklahoma that was its fourth loss in five games under veteran coach Bill Snyder.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — No. 13 Florida is counting on a much better performance against Missouri this season. A lopsided loss to the Tigers was the low point for Florida in the 2017 football season. The Gators had just parted ways with Jim McElwain and believed they would end a three-game losing streak at the Tigers. Florida receiver Josh Hammond says “the one thing about SEC ball is you play those guys every year. I think a lot of guys remember that loss and remember the feeling.”

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State’s Teaira McCowan, Baylor’s Kalani Brown and Iowa’s Megan Gustafson represent a small but valuable group of traditional centers who can dominate basketball games from in the post. Their presence is a big reason all their teams enter the preseason with expectations: Baylor is ranked No. 4, Mississippi State is No. 6 and Iowa is No. 13.

AHSTW Tops Newman Catholic

Sports

November 2nd, 2018 by Jim Field

AHSTW is heading to the UNI-Dome next week for the Class A state semi-finals after a home win Friday night over Newman Catholic.  The Vikings scored first and posted a 31-14 win.  Gabe Pauley scored a pair of touchdowns, including a 56 yard run on the Vikings first offensive play of the game.  Blake Osbahr made a leaping interception in the end zone to stop a Newman Catholic drive in the first quarter after the Vikings had taken the 7-0 lead.

Osbahr said the Vikings had a good week of preparation.

AHSTW picked off 4 passes, including two by Drake Partridge.  Vikings coach Davis Pattee said the interceptions were big in helping his team control the game.

After falling behind in their last two games and having to rally to win, Pattee said it was nice to get an early lead.

Korbin Martin scored on a 41 yard jet sweep and Brayton Tuma caught a 64 yard pass from Osbahr.  AHSTW also got a 28 yard field goal from Kyle Brannon as they improve to 11-0.  Next up will be a Friday, November 9th 1:00 pm match-up with 10-1 Edgewood-Colesburg.  We’ll have that game on KJAN from Cedar Falls.

Fremont-Mills starts fast and rolls past Exira-EHK

Fremont-Mills opened up a 28 point lead early and rolled to a 61-20 victory over Exira-EHK in the 8-Man Quarterfinals on Friday night. The Knights scored on their first three possessions to open the game strong. Mason Vanatta set the tone early with a 65-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game. The Spartans turned the ball over on downs on their first possession. Seth Malcom scored on a two yard run on the next possession for Fremont-Mills and Vanatta added another on their next possession with a 36-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0 in the first quarter.  The Spartans got their first score with 2:20 left in the half to make it a 28-7 game at that point. The Knights quickly answered back as Austin Gartner ran the ensuing kickoff back to the Spartans 5 yard line and Vanatta punched it in on the next play to push the lead to 34-7 by the half.

The Knights would eventually get a large enough lead in the second half to invoke the 35-point running clock rule and the fourth quarter ran away quickly.

Vanatta finished the game with 5 rushing touchdowns and one passing. Seth Malcom finished with two rushing touchdowns on the night. The Knights improved to 10-1 and avenged their opening season loss to the Spartans. Fremont-Mills heads back to the UNI-Dome for the semifinals for the second straight season. The Knights are set to play New London on Thursday at Noon in the Semifinals.

Exira-EHK has their season end with a record of 9-2 and says goodbye to a strong senior class.
