AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore guard Lindell Wigginton has been announced as one of 50 players to watch for the 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy Men’s Player of the Year honor.

Wigginton is the Big 12’s top returning scorer after averaging 16.7 points per game as a freshman. He joined Kevin Durant as the only freshmen in Big 12 history to average 16.0 points, while making 65 three-pointers at a 40 percent clip. Wigginton, a preseason All-Big 12 selection, scored 20-plus points in 13 games, including the final four games of the season.

The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native is one of six Big 12 players on the list.

A list of the midseason 30 team will be released on Feb. 13, 2019, followed by the 10 national semifinalists and four finalists on March 4, 2019 and March 19, 2019 respectively. The 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy will be awarded at the Naismith Awards Brunch on April 7, 2019, during the Final Four in Minneapolis.

Wigginton and his Cyclone teammates open the season Tuesday against Alabama State at Hilton Coliseum. The game will start at 7 p.m.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior wide receiver Hakeem Butler has been added to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, announced today by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.

Select voters of the award, given annually to the nation’s best receiver regardless of position, will trim down the list to 10 semifinalists on Nov. 12.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Butler has been a human highlight reel, leading the nation in yards per reception at 24.0.

His big-play ability has been on full display this season, recording nine of ISU’s 11 longest plays with eight receptions of 40 yards or longer.

Butler, who leads the team in receptions (33), receiving yards (791) and TD catches (8), has recorded four 100-yard receiving games on the year, including three-straight. He ranks 10th nationally in receiving yards per game at 98.9.

Five of Butler’s eight TD catches have gone for 48 yards or more and his eight TD snares ties for fifth on ISU’s season list. He currently has a streak of four-straight games with a TD catch, tying for the third-longest string in school history.

Against Oklahoma, Butler recorded a career-high 174 receiving yards and two TDs. In the Kansas win, he tied for the fifth-longest catch in school history with an 83-yard TD grab. He ended the KU game with 164 yards and two TDs.

Butler will go down as one of the greatest receivers in school history. He currently ranks in Iowa State’s career top-10 in yards per reception (1st- 19.5), receiving yards (8th, 1,622), TD catches (3rd- 17) and 100-yard receiving games (5th- 6).

Some of the top senior cross country runners around the state competed in the IATC All-Star meet on Saturday at DMACC in Ankeny.

In the girls race some of the area runners included Emma Lucas of Bedford who won the race. Creston’s Brielle Baker finished 13th. Alexis Post of Riverside finished 21st. Amelie Quartier of TJ came in 26th. Harlan’s Greichaly Kaster was 30th. Atlantic’s Ashley Wendt came in 37th and Karsyn Rush was 40th. Carlie Manrose of Shenandoah/Essex was 53rd and her teammate Claire Campbell was 57th.

In the boys race Jordan Hustak of Missouri Valley was the winner. Justin Ambrose of Boyer Valley finished 10th, Jalen Petersen of Atlantic was 24th, Jack Campbell of Shenandoah-Essex was 63rd.

A total of 60 girls and 66 boys competed in the All-Star event.

The Browns lost their fourth straight and first since Hue Jackson was fired.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas fired football coach David Beaty, effective at the end of the season, ending a three-plus year tenure marked by modest improvement but just a handful of wins. The school announced the firing Sunday. Beaty has a career record of 6-39 with three wins against Power Five opponents. He will be paid $3 million under terms of his contract.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 7 West Virginia has re-entered the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll after another weekend in which the number of ranked teams losing reached double digits. No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Notre Dame remained unchanged. No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Georgia and No. 6 Oklahoma each moved up a spot. Iowa State was ranked for the first time this season. It’s one of five teams to move into the ranking. Washington, North Carolina State, Michigan State and Cincinnati reappeared.

Kareem Hunt had two scoring runs and one receiving for the Chiefs (8-1), who came in averaging 36.3 points per game with an offense overloaded with weapons for Mahomes. The 23-year-old used all of them in winning his first pro matchup against Baker Mayfield and the Browns (2-6-1).

Mahomes and Mayfield didn’t match their epic college meeting in 2016, when they combined for more than 1,700 yards in offense. But the Chiefs put on another impressive offensive show with 499 total yards, averaging 8.6 per snap. In his second season, Mahomes, who made just one start as a rookie, already has 29 TD passes and 3,185 yards, the most by any QB through 10 games since 1950. He has passed for at least 300 yards in eight straight games.

Iowa State was ranked for the first time this season, one of five teams to move into the ranking this week. Iowa and Texas A&M fell out after losing for the second straight week.

The Atlantic girls swim team competed at State Meet in Marshalltown this weekend and came away with a12th place team finish with 63 points. Ames was the team champion with 372 points. The State Meet was held at the Marshalltown YWCA/YMCA.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Austin Errthum kicked four consecutive first-half field goals, the longest from 43-yards out, to stake Northern Iowa to a 19-3 halftime lead and spark the Panthers to a 26-16 in over Illinois State in a Missouri Valley Conference showdown. After JT Bohlken converted from 27-yards out on the Redbirds opening possession, Errthum capped three of UNI’s next four drives with field goals, hitting from 30, 30, 27 and 43 yards.
