AMES, Iowa (AP) — Bridget Carleton scored 27 points to move into fourth place on Iowa State’s all-time scoring list and the 23rd-ranked Cyclones walloped Texas Tech 105-66. Carleton hit four 3-pointers and added seven rebounds for Iowa State (16-5, 6-3 Big 12 Conference).

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Brad Davison scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half and fueled No. 24 Wisconsin’s decisive surge in the second half of a 62-51 win over Nebraska. The Badgers won their fourth straight game, frittering away a big first-half lead before pulling away in the second. Isaiah Roby led Nebraska with 18 points and nine rebounds.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Dylan Osetkowksi scored 16 points and Texas used stifling defense to snap a 10-game losing streak to No. 11 Kansas with a 73-63 win. Jase Febres made three 3-pointers late in the second half as Texas fought off a late rally that saw the Jayhawks get within three points. Texas hadn’t beaten the Jayhawks since 2014.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are planning more than $10 million in upgrades to Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs announced that the renovations will include a “modernization” of the Arrowvision scoreboard, along with waterproofing and new seats _ with cup holders _ in the stadium’s upper deck. The work could begin next week. The Kansas City Star reports the Chiefs are paying for the work but can ask in the future to be reimbursed by the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have hired Mark DeLeone as inside linebackers coach. DeLeone spent the past six seasons on Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City and worked with Bears coach Matt Nagy from 2013-17. DeLeone worked with Pro Bowl linebackers such as Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali and Justin Houston in Kansas City. Houston set a franchise record with 22 sacks in 2014.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Like a lot of freshmen thrust into starting jobs, Iowa State’s Talen Horton-Tucker has struggled to be consistent. He appears to be finding his rhythm again. Horton-Tucker broke out of an extended slump by putting up 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists in an 87-73 win at Mississippi. The Cyclones are now ranked No. 20 in the Top 25 and host West Virginia on Wednesday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has a new baby to keep him busy in the offseason. His wife, Isabelle, delivered a boy weighing 9 pounds, 5 ounces (about 4 kilograms, 140 grams) on Sunday. The couple named him James Augustine Butker and shared pictures on Twitter. Butker wrote, “Pray for Us!”

IOLA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver DeAnthony Thomas has been arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The sheriff’s office in southeast Kansas’ Allen County said in a Facebook post that Thomas was booked Saturday. The 26-year-old from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, has since been released on bond. The Kansas City Star reports that a Chiefs spokesperson says the team is aware of the incident but has no comment.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals signed versatile second baseman Whit Merrifield to a $16.25 million, four-year contract on Monday. The deal for the 30-year-old Merrifield covers his arbitration-eligible years. It includes $2 million in performance bonuses and a fifth-year team option worth $10.5 million.

ATLANTA (AP) — More than 100 flights have been canceled at Atlanta’s airport and city leaders say they fear ice could slicken streets and freeways just as thousands of fans begin pouring into town for Super Bowl 53. A winter weather advisory goes into effect at 3 a.m. Tuesday for Atlanta, a city known for grinding to a halt in relatively light snowfalls.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — No. 23 North Carolina State is set to face Atlantic Coast Conference tests against No. 3 Virginia and No. 12 Virginia Tech. The Wolfpack’s tough set of home games headlines the week’s schedule for AP Top 25 teams. The schedule includes a rematch between No. 9 North Carolina and No. 15 Louisville, as well as a meeting between No. 11 Kansas and No. 16 Texas Tech.

Sports

January 28th, 2019 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans opened the game up with a 7-0 run and never trailed against the CAM Cougars on Monday night in a 74-50 win. The Spartans led 23-14 at halftime and increased the lead to double-digits in the second quarter. A wild three at the first half buzzer by DeShawn Carr got the Cougars within 8 at the break 40-32.

The Spartans then put the game away by opening up the second half with a 16-0 run. The Cougars didn’t get a bucket until about one minute left in the third quarter and finished with just 5 points in the period. The Spartans pulled away further in the fourth quarter to improve to 16-2 on the season.

The Spartans had two players, Trey Nelson and Josh Pettepier, finish with 18 points. Nelson hit 4 threes in the game and Pettepier scored all of his 18 from downtown with 6 triples. Cole Burmeister also had a strong night with 16 points. The Spartans head to Boyer Valley on Friday.

The Cougars were led by 11 from DeShawn Carr off the bench. The Cougars fall to 6-9 on the season and will travel to Woodbine on Tuesday.

Exira-EHK tops CAM in girls basketball thriller

Sports

January 28th, 2019 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans were able to make enough big plays down the stretch to edge out a win over CAM 58-55 on Monday night in Elk Horn. It was a close game throughout with the teams being tied at the end of the first at 13. The Cougars got a three from Madison Gettler at the first half buzzer to lead by 6 at the break and they would lead by 5 at the end of the third.

Exira-EHK opened up the final period with a three from Macy Emgarten and got another bucket the next possession to tie the game up at 45. The game would tie back up again at 50 before three more lead changes put the Spartans on top at the end. Sophomore Tatum Grubbs went to the line three straight trips as the Cougars tried to extend the game. She made one out of two free throws the first two trips. Then on the third with the Spartans up one she sank both to give Exira-EHK a three point lead with about 16 seconds left. The Cougars never got a good look at a shot on the final possession and the Spartans held on for the win.

The Spartans were led by 23 points from Tatum Grubbs and got 13 from Macy Emgarten. The Spartans improve to 14-5 with the win and will next travel to Boyer Valley on Friday.

CAM was led by 24 points from Madison Gettler. The 6th rated Cougars fall to 14-2 and will travel to Woodbine on Tuesday.
