The IGHSAU released the latest weekly girls basketball rankings. Locally in Class 1A CAM drops to #9 after their road loss to Exira-EHK. In Class 2A Treynor is #3 and Panorama checks in at #7. In Class 3A Red Oak is #13. In Class 4A Denison-Schleswig is #7, Lewis Central #10, and Glenwood is back in at #15.

The Audubon Wheelers play host to the CAM Cougars for a basketball doubleheader tonight and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. The girls game is set for a 6:00pm start with the boys to follow at about 7:30pm.

The girls game will match the 7-10 Wheelers against the 14-2 Cougars. CAM is coming off that second loss of the season with a three point loss at Exira-EHK on Monday night. The Wheelers fell in their last outing as well 68-49 to Tri-Center. The Cougars are led by Madison Getller who is averaging 19 points per game. The Wheelers’ leading scorer is Aleah Hermensen who has dropped in 15 points per outing.

The boys game will match the 12-5 Wheelers against the 6-9 Cougars. The Wheelers have 3 players averaging double figures scoring. Tate Killeen leads the way with 22 points per outing while Lane Lawson is averaging 16 and Kaiden Smith is averaging 12. The Cougars have been led by 12 points per outing by Jacob Holste.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A state panel has ruled that the Chiefs owe $930,000 in back tax plus interest on the decade-old Arrowhead Renovation. The Kansas City Star reports that at issue was the team’s argument that it didn’t owe taxes on hundreds of items it bought to outfit the new Arrowhead. The Administrative Hearing Commission disagreed in its ruling Tuesday.

The case stems from a 2014 audit in which the Missouri Department of Revenue challenged sales tax exemptions on $23 million in purchases. The state auditor found that items such as leotards for cheerleaders and weight-lifting equipment didn’t fall under the public purpose of fixing up the stadium.

The Chiefs’ lead attorney says the team will likely appeal. The Missouri Department of Revenue has previously said it won’t comment on pending litigation.

CHICAGO (AP) — Cameron Krutwig hit his first 3-pointer of the season for a five-point lead with 48 seconds left and Loyola-Chicago held off Northern Iowa 61-60 on Wednesday night for its seventh straight home win. Krutwig made a hook shot in the lane for a 57-55 lead and he blocked a shot under the basket at the other end. Inbounding it with 51.4 seconds on the clock and four on the shot clock, Krutwig was left wide open in the corner and he swished it. He had missed his previous two 3-pointers this season. AJ Green nailed a long 3-pointer just before the final buzzer for UNI.

Krutwig finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Loyola (14-8, 7-2 Missouri Valley Conference), which has claimed 21 of its last 24 league games. Loyola has won 12 straight conference games at home for the first time since 1984-86 as a member of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. Marques Townes added 19 points and Bruno Skokna 11.

Loyola sophomore Lucas Williamson, who was averaging 8.6 points and 6.5 rebounds, underwent surgery this week on his right hand and will be out for three to four weeks.
Luke McDonnell scored 16 points and Green, averaging 14.9 points per game to lead MVC freshman, added 14 points for Northern Iowa (9-13, 4-5), which has won just once in eight games on the road this season.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s Lindell Wigginton leapt into the lane to steal a pass, sprinted down the court and got fouled. He then casually flipped the ball underhanded toward the basket from 30 feet — and found the bottom of the net. It was that kind of night for Wigginton, who has transitioned from a starter on a losing team to a lethal weapon off the bench for a winning one. Wigginton scored a season-high 28 points and 20th-ranked Iowa State cruised past West Virginia 93-68 on Wednesday night, its fourth win in five games. Wigginton’s previous high for points this season was 18 on Saturday in a Top 25 road win at Mississippi, a sign that he’s finally 100 percent back from the foot injury that cost him most of the non-conference season. Marial Shayok scored 18 points for the surging Cyclones (16-5, 5-3 Big 12), who shot 26 of 39 inside the 3-point line and 29 of 33 from the free throw line.

With all the chaos erupting atop the Big 12 standings, the Cyclones have a shot at taking control of the league in the weeks ahead. The weather in Iowa was so cold that the entire state canceled mail service on Wednesday, and it showed at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones typically fill their gym, especially for league games, but attendance was sparse at the upper levels of the arena. It was hard to blame some fans for staying home, though, on a day when the wind chill reached as low as minus-49 in Ames. But when Iowa State needed its crowd down the stretch, Hilton was as loud as ever.
“Great crowd. Great energy. Obviously it was a little cold out there,” Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Phil Fayne scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, Zach Copeland finished with 19 and Illinois State beat Drake 69-55 on Wednesday night. Milik Yarbrough added 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Illinois State (13-9, 6-3 Missouri Valley Conference), which has won four of its last five games. Keyshawn Evans chipped in with 11 points. Copeland, Yarbrough and Evans combined to make all nine of the Redbirds’ 3-pointers. Fayne posted his sixth game of the season with 20-plus points.

Nick McGlynn had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead Drake (16-6, 5-4). Tremell Murphy added 11 points, and Brady Ellingson scored nine points on three 3-pointers. Fayne scored eight points during a 13-4 surge to open the second half that stretched the Redbirds’ lead to 45-31 with 15 minutes remaining. Fayne’s dunk with 5:47 left made it 64-43.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Jared Harper scored 16 points while Chuma Okeke and Bryce Brown each had 14 to help Auburn snap a three-game losing streak with a 92-58 rout of Missouri. Auburn used a dominant second half to end the slide that sent the team tumbling out of the Top 25 following a six-week run in the Top 10.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Samajae Haynes-Jones scored 17 points and hit a dramatic layup with a second remaining to lift Wichita State to an 85-83 victory over SMU. SMU’s Jimmy Whitt Jr. hit a step-back 10-footer to tie the game at 83 with 19 seconds to go.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are planning more than $10 million in upgrades to Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs announced that the renovations will include a “modernization” of the Arrowvision scoreboard, along with waterproofing and new seats _ with cup holders _ in the stadium’s upper deck. The work could begin next week. The Kansas City Star reports the Chiefs are paying for the work but can ask in the future to be reimbursed by the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority.

Harlan senior Preston Mulligan announced this past weekend that he has committed to play college football at Briar Cliff. The quarterback had a big season in his one full year as a starter for the Cyclones. He passed for 2,676 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just six interceptions in 2018.

Mulligan chose Briar Cliff over other offers from Southwest Minnesota State, Iowa Central, and Iowa Western.

AMES, Iowa – No. 23 Iowa State (16-5, 6-3 Big 12) got another big night from Kristin Scott as the Cyclones left Hilton Coliseum 105-66 winners over Texas Tech (10-10, 1-8 Big 12) Tuesday night. Scott followed up her 31-point effort at Oklahoma State on Saturday with 22 against the Lady Raiders.

Joining the sophomore in double figures was Bridget Carleton (27), Madison Wise (13) and Alexa Middleton (10). The Cyclone offense shot a season-high 62.7 percent (42-of-67) from the field, including a season-best 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from 3-point range.

Iowa State’s 105 points is its second of the season and 16th century in program history. It is the most since the Cyclones have finished with since notching 113 against IPFW in 2004. This is also the Cyclones’ second 100-pointer of Big 12 play, the second time in program history that has happened (2000).

How It Happened

Again, a fast start was key for the Cyclones as ISU went on a 10-0 run to start the game, led by seven points from Big 12 Player of the Week Kristin Scott. Tech struck back via strong shooting from deep, draining five first-quarter 3-pointers to cut the Cyclone lead down to as few as one at 17-16 ISU. However, Iowa State recovered and finished the quarter strong to get up 27-21 after 10 minutes.

Despite Carleton being forced to the bench with two fouls early in the second period, ISU kept it rolling, with Madison Wise’s 3-pointer putting the home team up 14 at 37-23. After Scott and Carleton combined for 23 of the Cyclones’ 27 first quarter points, the supporting cast stepped it up in the second with 23 to help Iowa State take a 56-35 advantage to the locker room.

It was all ISU in the third as the Cyclones were able to counter the Red Raiders’ strong shooting by forcing some turnovers, eight for the quarter, as the lead grew to as many as 33 points. Carleton came back from her foul-related exile with 10 points in the third quarter.

The big lead allowed ISU to rotate the squad in the fourth quarter, as the bench helped up the advantage to as many as 49 points in the final 10 minutes.
