Atlantic girls golf finishes 3rd in Ames

Sports

April 22nd, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic girls golf team finished in 3rd place at the Ames Turk Bowman Invite on Monday. The tourney was played at Iowa State’s Veenker Golf Course. Waukee was the team title winner with a 356. Ames was 2nd with a 389 and Atlantic shot 390.

Baylee Newell was the top Atlantic golfer finishing 7th with a 92. Alyssa Ginther also shot a 92 in 8th place. Other Atlantic scores: Anna Weiser-20th-100, Lauren Nicholas-30th-106, Hannah Alff-47th-117.

Atlantic Head Coach Kathy Hobson: “Another good tournament outing for the Trojans with some good competition. Waukee is an outstanding team. And only losing by one to the host school made for a really good day overall.

We had our ups-n-downs. Saw lots of good shots; saw some not so good shots. The front 9 presented more problems for us than the back 9. As a team, we had to take way too many penalty shots. This course presents a lot of challenges we aren’t use to – a lot of penalty areas, large greens, and a lot of blind shots. We played in on-and-off rain most of the day. In the long run, these challenges should benefit us as we learn to manage our play better. Happy to see Anna Wieser in with a 100 and Lauren Nicholas at 106 on this course for first time. Anna is becoming more confident in her game.”

The overall medalist was Matt Gearheart of Atlantic with a round of 71. Other Atlantic scores were as follows: Cyle Renaud 80, Tate Den Beste 93, Braden Smith 99, Garrett McLaren 106, Cooper Jipsen 108.

Team Scores

  1. Glenwood 316
  2. Spencer 318
  3. Carroll 330
  4. Kuemper Catholic 331
  5. Lewis Central 336
  6. Atlantic 343
  7. Harlan 353
  8. Storm Lake 356
  9. Denison 362

Atlantic Head Coach Ed Den Beste: “Had several little rain showers when warming up for the meet today. Once we got started the rain went away and the wind picked up some and it got colder. Great to see Matt gaining confidence today as putts started to fall. He started bogie and double bogie but came back and made a great 30 foot putt on 18 to finish at even for the day. Cyle had struggles at times. Battled back though to shoot 80. Tate started really well with one over after 3 holes but had a rough spot in the middle with a few OBs but finished in low 90s. Braden couldn’t get it going today. Not a course you want to not be hitting well. Garrett struggled to start but came back on the front had some rough holes in there. Cooper played his best today. He shot 9 strokes better on the back than a week ago. Good to see him gain some confidence today.”

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs and Noah Syndergaard had better luck at the plate than on the mound, hitting a homer with Dexter Fowler’s help as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 6-4. Syndergaard allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits in five innings, but his most memorable play came while batting in the fourth. He hit a deep flyball to center that deflected off Fowler’s glove and over the fence.

NEW YORK (AP) — Austin Romine drove in the winning run in the 10th inning with his third RBI single, and the New York Yankees overcame a bullpen collapse that followed another scoreless start by James Paxton to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-6. After adding All-Star slugger Aaron Judge to their ever-growing injury list, the Yankees escaped a couple of late jams and got back over .500.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Blues became the first team in NHL history to be in last place after the New Year and reach the second round of the playoffs. St. Louis got solid goaltending from Jordan Binnington and timely offense from Jaden Schwartz to beat the Winnipeg Jets in six games. The Blues will face Nashville or Dallas for a spot in the Western Conference final.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State wide receiver Hunter Rison has been indefinitely suspended after his arrest on a domestic battery charge. The Manhattan Mercury reports police arrested Rison on Friday on suspicion of domestic battery charge. Rison was released on $1,000 bond. He tweeted he’d done nothing wrong.
