Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — John Elway moved down 10 spots to select Iowa tight end Noah Fant in the first round of the draft. Fant joins a tight end group that includes three players coming off injuries. The real drama surrounding the Broncos during the draft is what will happen with star cornerback Chris Harris Jr., who issued a pay-me-or-trade-me demand after what he viewed as disrespectful comments from general manager John Elway this week.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions addressed a pressing need, selecting tight end T.J. Hockenson with the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL draft. Detroit was initially interested in trading its first-round pick to acquire more selections, but they decided the Iowa star was too good to pass up. The 6-foot-5, 251-pound Hockenson is highly regarded because of his combination of athleticism, receiving skills and blocking. He won the John Mackey Award last year.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have effectively suspended Tyreek Hill from all team-related activities while they investigate an audio recording that aired on a local TV station in which the star wide receiver’s fiancee accused him of abusing their 3-year-old son. The recording surfaced one day after prosecutors said they believed abuse had occurred in Hill’s home last month but that they could not press charges because it was unclear who committed the crime.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs announced their trade with the Seattle Seahawks for pass rusher Frank Clark shortly before the start of the NFL draft, then confirmed the club had signed him to a long-term deal. The trade was agreed upon Tuesday, as was the $105.5 million, five-year contract. Both became official after Clark passed a physical.

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes will be on the cover of the “Madden NFL 20” video game. Electronic Arts made the announcement Thursday prior to the start of the NFL draft. Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns during the regular season and led the Chiefs to the AFC championship game for the first time since 1993. He is the eighth quarterback to be featured on the “Madden” cover.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell says he’s focused on “trying to become a better person” since being suspended for 40 games for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy. Russell was suspended last fall after a series of allegations made by his ex-wife. He says he’s done “a lot of self-reflecting and a lot of self-growth.”

Denver moves down, selects Iowa tight end Noah Fant

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — John Elway gave Joe Flacco just what he wanted, a threat to stretch the field, not take his job. The Denver Broncos general manager selected Iowa tight end Noah Fant with the 20th pick Thursday night, bypassing a quarterback in the first round of the NFL draft.

Elway, who gained an extra second-round pick by trading down 10 spots, said he didn’t consider taking a QB at 10 or 20, much to the surprise of all those prognosticators whose mock drafts had him enamored with Michigan State’s Drew Lock — who’s still on the board heading into Round 2 Friday. “No, no we didn’t,” Elway said. “It was not in the discussion when we got there.”

Fant and T.J. Hockenson, selected eighth by the Detroit Lions, became the first tight end teammates ever selected in the first round of the same draft. “It’s amazing to have those two great tight ends at the same school,” Elway said. Fant said at the NFL scouting combine, where he outperformed Hockenson in almost every measurement, that he wanted to be the first tight end taken in the draft. But he said he was OK going a dozen spots after Hockenson because he was “super excited, super stoked” to join the Broncos.

“And I would argue that I’m in the best situation for a tight end in this draft,” he said. Fant joins a young offense featuring second-year receiver Courtland Sutton and a tight end corps loaded with Big Ten alumni in Jake Butt, Jeff Heuerman and Troy Fumagalli, all coming off injuries.L
