Iowa sees more federal land opening for fishing and hunting

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

October 11th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — More federal land is being opened up for fishing and hunting in Iowa as part of the Trump administration’s move to make public land more accessible. Margaret Everson, of the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service, says one-point-four million acres were added to open areas this year, including at Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge east of Des Moines.

Everson says, “We’ve expanded 300 acres here for new opportunities for white tail deer for example, for pheasants, being able to, again, open new areas that have not been open before.” The Department of the Interior will also allow more big game hunting at De Soto Bend in western Iowa. Ducks Unlimited C-E-O Adam Putnam says making that land accessible to the public promotes outdoor recreation and conservation.

Putnam says, “Without that connection to the land, we’re not going to have a strong base of support for protecting the environment going forward.” Federal officials say they’re also trying to match state and federal regulations to encourage more hunting and fishing.

CAM Cougar Channel, Sports

The CAM Cougars (6-0) play host to the Boyer Valley Bulldogs (2-4) tonight in Anita and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. The Cougars have played solid football so far this season and that play is starting to turn some heads statewide, CAM is up to #6 in the latest Radio Iowa poll.  Boyer Valley Head Coach Cody Malone thinks the Cougars deserve to be in that top 5 discussion from what he has seen. Malone says he expects the Cougars offense to keep his team guessing tonight.

Lane Spieker and Cade Ticknor have been impressive on the ground for the Cougars, Spieker with 912 yards and 14 touchdowns and Ticknor with 293 yards and 11 scores. Coach Malone said that kind of success for two young runners is a credit to the guys up front.

Quarterback Gavin Reineke leads the way offensively for Boyer Valley. He’s thrown for 1,209 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions on the season. Coach Malone said his team has leaned on the pass a bit too much this season and are looking to get some different things going on the ground to have success at the end of the season.

The Cougars and the Bulldogs are set for a 7:00pm kickoff tonight in Anita. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on KJAN with the Dvorak Tire and Service Pregame Show starting at 6:30pm. You can also tune in for our pick ’em show “Who’s Gonna Win?” starting at 6:00pm. Stay tuned after the game for postgame coverage and all the scores around the state on “The Iowa High School Scoreboard Show” from 10:00pm-11:30pm. You can catch the game on-air, online, or on the web app tonight on KJAN. You can also watch the video broadcast of the game over on the CAM Cougar Channel tonight. Atlantic returns home for tough test against Greene County

Sports

October 11th, 2019 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans face a tough test in their homecoming game tonight. The Greene County Rams come in undefeated at 6-0 and are currently ranked as the 6th best team in Class 2A in the latest Radio Iowa Poll. Coming off a 28-7 loss to also top-ten ranked OABCIG last week, the Trojans will try to find some consistency.

Atlantic started well in the loss to the Falcons last week, forcing a fumble of the opening kickoff and putting a touchdown on the board right away to lead the game early. That lead was taken back by halftime due to the great play of OA-BCIG quarterback Cooper DeJean. The Trojans face another solid quarterback this week. Brent Riley has thrown for over 1,300 yards and leads a balanced attack.

That’s Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott. Colby Kafer has rushed for 996 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Rams, and Carter Morton rounds out that three-headed monster at wideout with 25 cathces for 610 yards and 8 scores. Greene County has also had an effective defense so far this season, only one opponent has scored more than 22 points on the Rams. Coach McDermott said a low scoring affair is quite alright for the Trojans but they will need to win the field position battle.

The Homecoming festivities begin this afternoon at the high school with Coronation and a Pep Rally from 12:15pm-1:15pm. The Homecoming parade in downtown Atlantic will begin at 2:30pm. The Rams and the Trojans kick off at 7:00pm at the Trojan Bowl.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — A curse-filled clubhouse victory speech by St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt that went viral after a player posted it on social media showed a different side to the usually mild-mannered skipper _ and while he was sorry that his colorful language got leaked, he did not feel bad about the gist of his message. The NL Central champion Cardinals are getting set to host the wild-card Washington Nationals for Game 1 of the best-of-seven NL Championship Series.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The relationship between Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Texans counterpart Deshaun Watson goes back well beyond the 2017 draft, when along with Mitch Trubisky they were considered among the best prospects at their position. Now, two of the bright young QBs in the league will square off when Houston visits Kansas City on Sunday.

UNDATED (AP) — This is not an easy year to be an offensive coordinator in the Big Ten. The conference includes the top four teams in the FBS in scoring defense: Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa and Ohio State. Move over to the yards-based total defense stat, and those same teams occupy four of the top five spots. Advanced stats also give high regard to the defenses at Michigan, Michigan State and Northwestern.

UNDATED (AP) — The Nittany Lions expect to run into their first real challenge in Kinnick Stadium where the Hawkeyes will try to rebound from a close loss to Michigan in their Big Ten opener. Both teams are propelled by top 10 defenses.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — David Perron’s second goal of the game proved to be the winner as the St. Louis Blues beat the Ottawa Senators 6-4. Oskar Sundqvist, Jay Bouwmeester, Brayden Schenn also scored for the Blues. Ryan O’Reilly had a goal and three assists and Jake Allen made 25 saves in his season debut. Vitaly Abramov, Artem Anisimov, Chris Tierney and Anthony Duclair scored for the Senators, who are off to their worst start after losing three straight games in regulation.
