EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs probably don’t know what to expect from the New York Giants. Neither do the Giants. On paper this game at MetLife Stadium is a mismatch. The Chiefs (6-3) are well-rested coming off a bye week. The Giants (1-8) seemingly have hit rock bottom after getting blown out by the Rams two weeks ago and then losing to the previously winless San Francisco 49ers last weekend.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs defense has been lambasted for being poor against the run. But the reality is their pass defense hasn’t been much better, a big reason they’ve lost three of four. As the Chiefs return from their bye with a visit to the Giants, they understand that getting back to winning ways on defense will play a big part in whether they make some playoff noise.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big 12 has a team in the top four of the College Football Playoff rankings, but not a team locked into its championship game. With only two games left, the most straightforward championship game scenario would be No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 11 TCU winning out and meeting again Dec. 2. There is also the chance for several tiebreaker scenarios coming into play to determine the title game matchup. While unlikely, there’s still a chance six teams could finish with 6-3 conference records.

NEW YORK (AP) — Shamorie Ponds scored 22 points, Justin Simon had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and St. John’s pulled away early from Nebraska for a 79-56 victory. Bashir Ahmed scored 15 points and Marcus LoVett added 13 with three assists for St. John’s (3-0), which outrebounded Nebraska 50-39 and outscored them 44-16 in the paint.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid is 16-2 when his teams are coming off a bye. That’s good news for a team that lost three of four heading into its week off. Also good news? The first opponent out of the bye is the 1-8 New York Giants, with more bottom-dwellers still to come for the AFC West leaders.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Matt and Becca Hamilton of McFarland, Wisconsin, are at the U.S. Olympic curling trials in Omaha, Nebraska, this week vying for berths in the Pyeonchang Games. The two also will compete together in mixed doubles trials next month in Minnesota. Matt helped coach Becca when she first started curling. He said it’s a surreal feeling for them to be chasing their Olympic dreams together.

Milwaukee thumps Iowa State 74-56

Sports

November 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Brock Stull scored 17 points and Milwaukee thumped host Iowa State 74-56 on Monday, the Cyclones’ first defeat in a home opener in 20 years. Brett Prahl scored 14 points and Bryce Nze added 13 for the Panthers (2-0), who were picked to finish eighth in the 10-team Horizon League.

After a promising start, Iowa State fell behind 39-32 by halftime in part because it committed 11 turnovers in just 20 minutes. The Panthers pushed their lead to double digits on a Nze layup that made it 52-41 with 12:05 to go.

Any notion of a comeback from the Cyclones (0-2), who have just one returning starter in Solomon Young, was done in by some dreadful shooting in the second half. Iowa State went just 5 of 20 from the field after the break, and Milwaukee pushed its lead to 64-49 with just under five minutes to go.

Jeff Beverly and Nick Weiler-Babb each had 11 points to lead the Cyclones, who finished with 18 turnovers. They also shot just 3 of 15 from 3-point range and were outrebounded 31-29.

UP NEXT: Iowa State plays Appalachian State on Thursday in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, which was moved to South Carolina.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Juwan McCloud made six 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 18 points to help Northern Iowa roll past Alcorn State 73-45 on Monday night. Tywhon Pickford added 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Bennett Koch had 11 points and 13 rebounds for Northern Iowa (1-1), which bounced back from an 86-69 loss to No. 9 North Carolina on Friday night.

A.J. Mosby scored 15 points to lead Alcorn State (0-3). Klint Carlson, who finished with seven points, and McCloud hit back-to-back 3-pointers and the Panthers had a double-digit lead seven minutes into the game. Pickford made a 3-pointer to cap an 18-0 run with 10:36 left before halftime as Northern Iowa built a 37-27 at the break.

Alcorn State pulled to 39-28 with 17:44 to play. A 21-5 run stretched the Panthers’ lead to 28 points with seven minutes left. Northern Iowa made 15 of 27 3-pointers.
