Sports

October 19th, 2020 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa Athletics Department conducted 660 COVID-19 PCR tests for the week of Oct. 12-18, 2020. Six positive tests and 654 negative tests have been received. As part of the return to campus protocol, testing began May 29, 2020, and includes student-athletes, coaches and staff. A total of 253 positive tests, 6,901 negative tests and one inconclusive test have been received.

The Big Ten Conference began daily rapid antigen surveillance testing on Sept. 30, 2020. Any positive tests identified through the surveillance testing process would be confirmed through a PCR test and reflected in the numbers listed above.

Following the positive test result, protocol established by UI Athletics and medical staff, including contact tracing procedures, is being followed to ensure the safety of all UI Athletics student-athletes and staff. This mandatory protocol also includes isolation for the individuals who test positive, and quarantine for those individuals who might have been exposed to someone with the virus.

Iowa will face Gonzaga at Sanford Pentagon

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s basketball team will return to the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Dec. 19, to face Gonzaga in a matchup between two of the country’s top teams. The game will be televised nationally on CBS and will tipoff at 11 a.m. (CT).

A limited number of tickets will go on sale at a later date. Masks are required for all spectators and will be available for free at the door. The Sanford Pentagon will work closely with the schools and individual states and be ready to adjust based on guidelines and safety measures for all involved.

Iowa’s matchup against Gonzaga, replaces this summer’s previously announced game against Oregon State in Sioux Falls (Dec. 22).

The contest will be Iowa’s second trip to the Pentagon, which has hosted 28 NCAA Division I men’s college basketball games since opening in 2013. The Hawkeyes defeated Colorado, 80-73, on Dec. 22, 2017. This will be Gonzaga’s first visit to the Pentagon.

This will be the fourth meeting between Gonzaga and Iowa. The Hawkeyes won the first two contests in 1984 and 1985, while the Zags won the last meeting in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

The remainder of Iowa’s 2020-21 schedule will be announced at a later date.

Hawkeyes enter game week

Sports

October 19th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Game week is finally here for the Iowa Hawkeyes who open a revived Big Ten season at Purdue on Saturday. It caps a roller coaster offseason that saw the Big Ten cancel the season in early August before reversing course a month later. Hawkeye sophomore receiver Tyrone Tracy.

The Hawkeyes are coming off a 10-3 season that included a lopsided win over USC in the Holiday Bowl.

That is senior linebacker Nick Niemann who says the lack of fans will allow the defense to communicate better.

Sophomore Center Tyler Linderbaum says the lack of fans at road games will help the offense.

Sopmore quarter Spencer Petras makes his first start and says the lack of fans will help the offense communicate on the road.

Petras takes over an offense that returns most of its skill players.

Iowa says it won’t pay ex-players’ demand for $20 million

Sports

October 18th, 2020 by admin

By ERIC OLSON AP College Football Writer
The University of Iowa said it would not pay a demand from eight Black former football players for $20 million in compensation for alleged racial discrimination they faced playing for the Hawkeyes. The university general counsel’s office released its response Sunday to a 21-page certified letter dated Oct. 5 from civil rights attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who is representing the players. The players also called for the firings of head football coach Kirk Ferentz, offensive line coach Brian Ferentz and athletic director Gary Barta. The university says it has taken steps to improve the environment for Black athletes.

McDermott credits Reid’s influence as Bills host Chiefs

Sports

October 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott pays credit to experiences and advice he gained working under Kansas City coach Andy Reid, while the two were in Philadelphia. And that includes getting fired by Reid in 2010, which McDermott says was the best thing to happen to his career. The firing brought them closer, and they can even joke about it now. McDermott gets to face his mentor on the opposing sideline on Monday, when the Bills host the Chiefs in an AFC matchup of two 4-1 teams.

Listen for the pre-game show 3-p.m. Monday, on KJAN, followed by the kick-off at 4-p.m.
