Off night sends Atlantic to loss against Glenwood in home opener

Sports

December 4th, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Boys Basketball team struggled in a number of phases on Friday night and dropped their home opener to Glenwood 56-41.

Atlantic started the game hot with an early 9-1 lead and Glenwood racking up some fouls on key players. Atlantic led 13-7 at the end of the first but that lead evaporated in the second. Glenwood got the first six points of the quarter to tie the game and then the Rams got couple of big threes from Jayme Fritts to put them out front. It was Glenwood 25-24 at halftime and then Ryan Blum erupted in the third. Blum scored 12 of his 30 points in the third quarter and Glenwood took a 7 point lead by the end of the third and held Atlantic mostly at bay the rest of the way.

Blum led all scorers with his 30 point night. The Rams start the season with a win and will host Denison-Schleswig on Tuesday.

Atlantic only had three players get in the scorebook. Dayton Templeton had 18 and Skyler Handlos had 17. Ethan Williams was the only other scoring contributor with 6. The Trojans also had a tough night rebounding; giving Glenwood a large number of multiple shot possessions. Atlantic falls to 1-1 on the season and will travel to Clarinda on Tuesday night.

Atlantic girls hang tough early but top-ranked Glenwood pulls away

The Atlantic Trojans girls basketball team held close to Class 4A #1 Glenwood early, but the Rams pulled away as the game progressed for a 68-52 win. It was a 15-14 lead for the Rams after the first quarter but they stretched the lead to 8 by halftime. That lead swelled to 16 by the end of the third as the Rams started strong in the third quarter.

Glenwood got 17 points from Madison Camden and 16 from Jenna Hopp in their season opening win. The Rams looked much like a top-ranked team with good contributions from nearly everyone on the bench. The Rams will only get stronger with the return of senior Elle Scarborough who was out for the opener. Next up for the Rams is a home game against Denison-Schleswig on Tuesday.

Atlantic was led by 15 points from Haley Rasmussen and 11 from Lauren Nicholas. Atlantic will try to regroup from a tough opening week schedule with a trip to face the Griswold Tigers on Saturday and then a road trip to Clarinda on Tuesday.

Sports

December 4th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa State basketball coach Steve Prohm says there is no panic as the Cyclones get set for Sunday’s game against DePaul. The Cyclones are 1-1 after a loss to South Dakota State and in both games have played poorly in the opening half.

Prohm says the Cyclones need to do a better job of implementing their defensive game plan.

Senior forward Solomon Young says the Cyclones need to be better at the start of games.

Young says lack of experience has hurt his team.

No. 9 Iowa State hosts West Virginia

(Radio Iowa) – The most successful regular season in program history comes to a close on Saturday at home when Iowa State hosts West Virginia. Ranked ninth in the playoff poll the Cyclones capture sole possession of the Big 12 regular season crown with a win. The difference according to coach Matt Campbell is winning the close games, something they were unable to accomplish last season.

Campbell says it has been improvement in all areas.

Senior defensive back Lawrence White says the Cyclones expect another close game.

White says the 5-3 Mountaineers will provide a tough test.

No. 24 Iowa visits Illinois (Saturday)

Sports

December 4th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Illinois team the Hawkeyes play Saturday has made big strides since the start of the season. The 24th ranked Hawkeyes take on an Illini team that has won it’s last two games under coach Lovie Smith.

Ferentz says the return of quarterback Brandon Peters has made the Illini a different team.

Because of COVID limitations on the size of indoor gatherings in the state of Illinois the Hawkeyes will have their regular Friday meetings in Iowa City before heading to Champaign.

Forecast is promising for busy start to deer hunting season tomorrow

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

December 4th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – With clear skies and highs in the 40s forecast for much of Iowa this weekend, it’s expected to be an extremely busy opening weekend for shotgun deer season. Tyler Harms, a biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says the fields and forests will be full of hunters. “It’s our most popular deer hunting season of the year,” Harms says. “We expect to see about 120,000 hunters in the field hunting deer in the next few weekends. The weather forecast for this weekend looks really great.”

Harms says those hunters should find a target-rich environment in many parts of Iowa. “So far this year, our harvest is trending right along about where we were at this time last year,” Harms says. “That’s a good sign. That indicates to us the population is fairly similar to where it was last year and things are looking good for this weekend.” Harms says there are a few key changes in deer hunting regulations this year, like allowing for antlerless deer hunting in seven north-central Iowa counties. “That is something that we have not allowed in previous years, mostly to allow the population to recover to goal levels,” he says, “but our data suggests the population is increasing so we’re allowing antlerless harvest in those counties.”

Harms reminds all hunters to review their safety training. “Have a plan and hunt your plan, make sure you’re wearing plenty of blaze orange,” Harms says. “Also, be mindful of your shot. Make sure you know what your target is and what’s beyond your target.” Hours for shotgun deer season are from sunrise and sunset. The first shotgun deer season runs from December 5th to the 9th, with the second season running December 12th to the 20th.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Luka Garza scored 35 points, 30 in the first half, and Jack Nunge added 18 as No. 3 Iowa stayed undefeated with a 99-58 home win over Western Illinois. It was the second consecutive game in which Garza scored 30 or more points in the first half. The preseason All-American also pulled down 10 rebounds. Nunge, who missed the Hawkeyes’ first two games this season because of his father’s death, matched his career scoring high.
