In the Big 12 a running back resurgence led by Hall, Brown

Sports

December 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(A-P) The Big 12 has long had a reputation for high-flying passing offenses. The spotlight has shifted a bit. Pass defenses are improving. And running backs are stealing some of the show. Last season, Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard led the nation in rushing and finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy balloting. This season, Iowa State’s Breece Hall leads the nation in rushing and West Virginia’s Leddie Brown ranks eighth.

Chiefs will have best 13-game record ever if they beat Miami

Sports

December 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(By The Associated Press undefined) – The Chiefs are second in the NFL in point differential going into Sunday’s game at Miami and the Dolphins are fourth. Kansas City will clinch the AFC West with a victory or a tie or a Raiders loss against the Colts. With a win the Chiefs would have the best 13-game record in franchise history at 12-1. The Chiefs would reach 12 wins for the third consecutive season, the longest streak in club history.

The Dolphins have won seven of their past eight games. Their 12-game record of 8-4 is their best since 2003.

The award recognizes an NFL player for outstanding community service activities off the field, as well as excellence on the field. It was established in 1970 and renamed in 1999 after the late Hall of Fame running back.

Chiefs, Steelers top AFC, but plenty of others could contend

Sports

December 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(By DENNIS WASZAK Jr. AP Pro Football Writer) – Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are already in the NFL playoffs and that’s no surprise for the defending Super Bowl champions. Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers are undefeated no more but they’re also on the verge of clinching an AFC spot. After that there are plenty of other contenders who might have something to say about the conference being just a top-heavy twosome.

Buffalo and Cleveland are 9-3 with Tennessee, Miami and Indianapolis all 8-4. Baltimore and Las Vegas are still in the mix at 7-5. And it’s never smart to count out a Bill Belichick-coached New England team at 6-6.

Two Iowa seniors plan to move on

Sports

December 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa kicker Keith Duncan says it is time to move on. The All-American will be one of 22 seniors honored prior to Saturday’s game against Wisconsin. Because of NCAA rules regarding the pandemic, Duncan could return for a sixth year.

Duncan hopes to land a job in the NFL. A finals for the Lou Groza Award last year, Duncan is 12 of 16 in field goal attempts this season.

Senior linebacker Nick Niemann (nee-mun) does not plan on taking advantage of the extra year.

Niemann watched his older brother, Ben, played for the Hawkeyes and now his father, Jay, is a member of the coaching staff.

Atlantic Sports – COVID update; Bowling leagues and other organized sports may resume in Iowa

Sports

December 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa/KJAN) – Governor Kim Reynolds, Wednesday, updated her public health emergency proclamation and is letting organized sports for kids and adults — including bowling leagues — resume, but spectators are limited to two per participant.

The governor’s current proclamation lasts through December 16th, but the governor told reporters she and her staff review data daily and changes to her executive actions could be made before or after that date. Atlantic Activities Director Andy Mitchell, Wednesday, told the Atlantic School Board, Middle School sports and youth sports will be starting back up for the district, beginning tomorrow (Friday).

Mitchell said with the Governor’s latest proclamation, additional categories of people may attend local sporting events, with the two-ticket rule in-place.

Mitchell said things have been running smoothly so-far as attendance at local sport events, as evidenced by the crowd at the wrestling meet held Tuesday.

He said he’s very happy and proud of the work that’s been put in that allows kids have an opportunity to have a season in no matter what the sports. That includes adjustments by coaches in how practices are handled.
