Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The early report is that Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire sustained hip and ankle injuries and will miss the remainder of the regular season, though the team appears optimistic that he could return in the playoffs. X-rays taken after the game were negative. In the meantime, Le’Veon Bell is poised to take over the bulk of the work after the two-time All-Pro signed with the Super Bowl champions in October. He scored a TD on Sunday in New Orleans.

UNDATED (AP) — Led by their star quarterbacks, the Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers each had seven players selected to the Pro Bowl. The Baltimore Ravens also had seven players chosen. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes joins Buffalo’s Josh Allen and Houston’s Deshaun Watson as the AFC quarterbacks. For the NFC, it’s Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, Seattle’s Russell Wilson and Arizona’s Kyler Murray. Mahomes and Rodgers are the starters, though there will be no actual game this season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Jan. 31, the players will be celebrated during two Pro Bowl-themed shows airing on an ESPN/ABC simulcast, with a virtual Pro Bowl experience within the Madden NFL 21 video game.

UNDATED (AP) — Gonzaga has strengthened its hold on the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll after beating Iowa. The Zags received 61 of 64 first-place votes from a media panel and No. 2 Baylor got the remaining three. No. 3 Kansas moved up 2 spots this week, with Iowa and Villanova rounding out the top 5. No. 10 Texas cracked the top 10 for the first time since reaching No. 6 in 2014-15. No. 12 Michigan State dropped 8 spots after losing to Northwestern.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have signed John Brebbia to an $800,000, one-year deal, taking a chance on the right-handed reliever coming off Tommy John surgery. The 30-year-old Brebbia spent his first three seasons with St. Louis, but he was non-tendered by the Cardinals on Dec. 2. He is 6-foot-7 with a 3.14 ERA and two saves in 161 career games, all in relief. Brebbia had right elbow surgery on June 3 and missed the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa says he doesn’t have a drinking problem. He also says he has to prove that with his behavior. The 76-year-old La Russa has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge to resolve misdemeanor drunken driving charges stemming from his arrest nearly 10 months ago on a freeway in metro Phoenix. La Russa said he feels “deep remorse and regret” about what happened. He underwent 20 hours of alcohol counseling after his arrest, which he described as “very helpful.”

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Patrick Mahomes passed for 254 yards and three touchdowns and the Kansas City Chiefs extended their winning streak to nine games with a 32-29 victory over the New Orleans Saints. The Kansas City defense did its part to spoil Drew Brees’ return from rib fractures and a punctured lung that had kept the record-setting passer out four games. Brees passed for 234 yards and three TDs. But he completed less than half of his passes and was intercepted for just the fourth time this season. Le’Veon Bell had a 12-yard touchdown run for the Chiefs.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Fiesta Bowl could add another high-scoring game to its history with No. 12 Iowa State scheduled to face No. 25 Oregon on Jan. 2. The Cyclones dropped four spots in the College Football Playoff rankings after losing to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game. The Ducks won their second straight Pac-12 championship by beating Southern California. Iowa State has the nation’s leading rusher in Breece Hall, who had 1,436 yards and 19 touchdowns. Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 1,480 yards and 13 touchdowns with five interceptions in six games.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Marcus Carr scored 32 points, making 14 free throws after halftime, and Minnesota held off Saint Louis 90-82, handing the Billikens their first loss of the season. The game was Carr’s fourth straight with 28 points or better. Carr also finished with seven assists and four steals. Four other Gophers reached double figures, Gabe Kalscheur and Both Gach with 11 points each, Liam Robbins and Isaiah Ihnen with 10 each. Jordan Goodwin scored 21 points with 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead Saint Louis, his sixth double-double in seven games.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Aleksa Gulbe scored 18 points with 12 rebounds and No. 15-ranked Indiana drubbed Nebraska 81-45 in the Hoosiers’ Big Ten Conference opener. Mackenzie Holmes scored 16 for the Hoosiers who scored almost half their points (38) on the inside. Following a 13-9 first quarter, Indiana went on a 14-5 run in the first five minutes of the second. Gulbe buried a 3-pointer, recorded a three-point play and added a layup to start the run. Indiana went on to a 38-19 halftime lead and was never challenged in the second half. Isabelle Bourne scored 16 for Nebraska.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Solomon Young scored 18 points, Jalen Coleman-Lands added 16 and Iowa State beat Jackson State 60-45. The Cyclones ended their four-game losing streak while the Tigers remain winless with their fifth consecutive loss following the cancelation of their first four games due to COVID-19. Coleman-Lands grabbed nine rebounds and Young collared eight. Tristan Jarrett scored 18 points for Jackson State. Iowa State is scheduled to host Chicago State on Tuesday, which will mark its fifth game in 12 days. The Tigers are scheduled to play at North Alabama on Tuesday. Jackson State’s Jan. 9 contest against Alcorn State will serve as its home opener.
