Chiefs to start Henne against Herbert, Chargers on Sunday

Sports

January 2nd, 2021 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Justin Herbert had just turned 10 years old when Chiefs quarterback Chad Henne was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. Think that’s wild? The Chargers QB was still in high school the previous time Henne started a game. It will be quite the matchup on Sunday when the 22-year-old Herbert, who has surpassed just about everyone’s expectations during a breakout rookie season, starts for the Chargers in Kansas City. Opposite him will be the 35-year-old Henne, who gets the nod as the Chiefs rest their starters with the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs already secured.

The Kansas City Chiefs go for their franchise record 11th straight win when they play the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday. But with the No. 1 seed and first-round bye in the AFC playoffs already secured Patrick Mahomes and many other starters will have at least some of the weekend off. The Chiefs have won three straight and 12 of their last 13 against the Chargers, who come into Sunday riding a three-game win streak.

COSTA MESA, Calif (AP) — The Los Angeles Chargers will be without six starters, including both of their Pro Bowl selections for Sunday’s season finale at Kansas City. Wide receiver Keenan Allen has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Defensive end Joey Bosa is out for the second straight week due to a concussion and shin injury. Tight end Hunter Henry will miss his second straight game as he remains on the COVID-19 list. Offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga, cornerback Casey Hayward Jr. and safety Rayshawn Jenkins have also been ruled out along with reserve linebacker Malik Jefferson.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — Second-year Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg is getting the same results with a new team. The Cornhuskers’ basketball team has lost 20 straight Big Ten games. The latest was a 36-point beat-down by Ohio State on Wednesday that ranks as the most lopsided in Hoiberg’s college coaching career. Only two players on the current roster suited up for Nebraska last year. That was Hoiberg’s first season. The Huskers have averaged just under 59 points while opening Big Ten play with three losses. The Huskers are shooting 30% on 3-pointers and 41% overall and averaging 12.9 assists. Those are all Big Ten lows.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — All-America defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon of Iowa announced his decision to declare for the NFL draft and forego his senior season. Nixon made the announcement on social media and the athletic department confirmed his decision. Nixon was named a first-team Associated Press All-American and was AP Big Ten defensive player of the year. He led the Big Ten in tackles for loss, tied for the conference lead in sacks and had the most tackles by a Big Ten defensive lineman.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Sam Haiby made a game-winning putback just before the buzzer as Nebraska beat No. 15 Northwestern 65-63. Haiby drove from the right wing, spun into a double team and her scoop shot was short, but she grabbed the rebound and curled it in before getting mobbed by her teammates. Haiby missed nearly four minutes of the fourth quarter after dealing with a leg cramp, but returned to make Nebraska’s only two field goals in the final three minutes. She finished with 18 points, on 8-of-20 shooting, eight rebounds and five assists. Lindsey Pulliam led Northwestern with 19 points.

Ranked teams meet as No. 14 Rutgers hosts No. 10 Iowa

Sports

December 31st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(A-P) Two ranked teams battle Saturday, when No. 10 Iowa visits No. 14 Rutgers in a Big Ten showdown. Iowa has two wins and one loss against ranked opponents this season, while Rutgers has won one of its two games against ranked teams.

Iowa’s Luka Garza, Joe Wieskamp and Jordan Bohannon have combined to account for 55 percent of the team’s scoring this season, including 57 percent of all Hawkeyes points over the last five games. Garza has connected on 48.6 percent of the 37 3-pointers he’s attempted and has gone 5 for 16 over the last three games. He’s also converted 72.4 percent of his foul shots this season.

Rutgers has won its last six home games, scoring an average of 83.8 points while giving up 71.2.

The Hawkeyes have recently converted buckets via assists more often than the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers has an assist on 36 of 81 field goals (44.4 percent) across its past three matchups while Iowa has assists on 55 of 81 field goals (67.9 percent) during its past three games.

The Iowa offense has recorded a turnover on only 12.7 percent of its possessions, which is the fourth-best rate in the nation. The Rutgers defense has forced opposing teams to turn the ball over on just 17.3 percent of all possessions (ranked 283rd among Division I teams).

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten men’s basketball conference has a record nine teams in the latest Associated Press poll. Wisconsin is No. 6, Iowa is No. 10, Rutgers is No. 14, Illinois is No. 15, Michigan is No. 16, Michigan State is No. 17, Northwestern is No. 19, Minnesota is No. 21, and Ohio State is No. 25. Topping the ever-tough league slate this week is the Iowa-Rutgers game. The Hawkeyes are 8-2, having bounced back from a loss at Minnesota by beating Northwestern. Rutgers is 7-1 despite not yet being at full strength due to injuries.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Iowa State’s Brock Purdy and Oregon’s Tyler Shough are heading back to the desert. Two of the most prolific high school quarterbacks in Arizona history will face off in the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday. Purdy and Shough were baseball teammates when they were younger and have the same quarterbacks coach. They still work out together during the offseason. Now they’ll square off under the bright lights of a New Year’s Six bowl.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Eighth-ranked Oklahoma captured the Cotton Bowl with a convincing 55-20 pounding of No. 10 Florida. Spencer Rattler threw for three touchdowns and ran for another score, 11 days after helping the Sooners win the Big 12 title in the same stadium. Oklahoma racked up 684 total yards, with Rhamondre Stevenson rushing for 186.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Wisconsin won its bowl game by rallying against Wake Forest. Graham Mertz accounted for three touchdowns and the Badgers turned four second-half interceptions into 21 points to beat the Demon Deacons, 42-28 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Mertz threw for 130 yards and ran for two short touchdowns as Wisconsin finished the season on a high note.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs plan to rest the majority of their starters against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, choosing to risk a bit of rust over the danger of injury with the No. 1 seed and first-round playoff bye already secured. Chiefs coach Andy Reid declined to say which starters would sit, though he did indicate veteran Chad Henne will start at quarterback and Matt Moore will likely be promoted from the practice squad. That means it’s nearly certain Patrick Mahomes, who needs just 260 yards passing to reach 5,000 for the season, won’t step foot on the field this week.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio Spurs assistant Becky Hammon made history by becoming the first woman to serve as head coach in an NBA game. Hammon took over when Gregg Popovich was ejected in the second quarter of the Spurs’ 121-107 loss to the Lakers. Lakers forward LeBron James spoiled the historic moment by delivering 26 points, eight assists and five rebounds on his 36th birthday.
