IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa men’s basketball senior Luka Garza was named National Player of the Year and a unanimous first-team All-American by Sporting News on Tuesday.

Garza is the sixth men’s basketball player to be named National Player of the Year by Sporting News in consecutive seasons (2020-21) and first since Michael Jordan (1983-84). Other consecutive winners include Bill Walton (1969-70), Bill Bradley (1964-65), Jerry Lucas (1961-62), and Oscar Robertson (1958-60). Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won it twice, in 1967 and 1969, but his reign was interrupted by Elvin Hayes’ tremendous 1968 season.

Joining Garza on the five-player first team are Ayo Dosunmu of Illinois, Jared Butler of Baylor, Gonzaga’s Corey Kispert and Cade Cunningham of Oklahoma State. Sporting News is one of four outlets used by the NCAA to determine its consensus All-America teams (Associated Press, National Association of Basketball Coaches, United States Basketball Writers Association, and Sporting News).

The Washington, D.C., native is also a finalist for six national awards: Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy, Wooden Award, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, Senior CLASS Award, and the Lute Olson Award.

Garza (6-foot-11, 265 pounds) has led the fifth-ranked Hawkeyes to 20 victories this season, including wins in seven of their last eight. He leads the nation in total points (642); player efficiency rating (36.17); 30-point games (7); field goals made (240); and 22-point games (17). Garza is eighth nationally in free throw makes (125) and 13th in double-doubles (12).

Garza averaged 21.9 points per game during the 20-game conference schedule, becoming the third player since 1990 to lead the league in scoring in consecutive seasons (Michigan State’s Steve Smith and Evan Turner of Ohio State).

Garza broke the school’s 32-year old scoring record held by Roy Marble on Feb. 21, 2021. His 2,201 points rank 13th best in Big Ten history. In addition to ranking first in career scoring, Garza is tops at Iowa in conference scoring (1,399), total field goals made (829), field goal attempts (1,522), and 40-point games (2); second in 30-point games (12); fourth in double-doubles (33); fifth in rebounding (895); fifth in blocked shots (148); eighth in free throw makes (430); and 13th in 3-pointers made (113).

He is the only men’s basketball player in Big Ten history to accumulate 2,000 points, 850 rebounds, 125 blocked shots, and 100 3-pointers. Garza is the only Hawkeye in school history to amass four 400-point seasons and two 600-point seasons.

Fifth-ranked Iowa (20-7, 14-6) will open Big Ten Tournament play on Friday in the quarterfinals. Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 8 p.m. (CT) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

March 9th, 2021 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s Rasir Bolton and Jalen Coleman-Lands have been recognized with the announcement of the All-Big 12 selections as voted on by the league’s coaches. Bolton was a third-team selection, while Coleman-Lands received honorable mention.

Bolton earned All-Big 12 Third-Team honors after leading the Cyclones with 15.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists as a junior. Bolton, a Petersburg, Virginia native, reached double figures in 17 games, scoring a season-high 26 points at TCU. He shot 45.5 percent from the floor and 83.8 percent at the charity stripe.

Among league players, Bolton is seventh in scoring and eighth in assists, while also ranking among the top 20 in rebounding. During the regular season, Bolton ranked seventh in the Big 12 in field goal percentage and sixth in free throw percentage.

Coleman-Lands, a graduate transfer, had an impressive season after joining the Cyclones this season. The Indianapolis, Indiana native averaged 14.3 points and shot 39.7 percent from 3-point range while connecting on a team-high 54 three-pointers.

Coleman-Lands reached double figures in 20 of his 22 games this season, including four games with 20 points. He’s 11th in the Big 12 in scoring and eighth in field goal percentage.

During the season’s final nine games, Coleman-Lands averaged 17.5 points per game, which ranked fifth in the league during that stretch.

Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham was named Big 12 Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, while Baylor’s Scott Drew was named coach of the year.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — Les Miles is out as Kansas’ head coach just days after he was placed on administrative leave amid sexual misconduct allegations from his tenure at LSU. Kansas described Miles’ departure as a mutual agreement to part ways. He has three years left on his original five-year contract with the school. Last week, LSU released a 148-page review by a law firm about the university’s handling of sexual misconduct complaints. It described how Miles “tried to sexualize the staff of student workers in the football program by, for instance, allegedly demanding that he wanted blondes with big breasts, and ‘pretty girls.'”

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton has lifted coach Greg McDermott’s suspension for making racially insensitive remarks to his players during a postgame talk. McDermott twice used the term “plantation” as part of an analogy urging team unity. He apologized but was suspended last Thursday. Athletic director Bruce Rasmussen says the coach understands that forgiveness must be earned and he is willing to work for it. McDermott will become active in a campus program designed to help participants better understand racism and create change. He will return for this week’s Big East Tournament and the NCAA Tournament that begins next week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says it could be years before its schools recover from the financial blow they took when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down sports. Bowlsby believes there is reason to feel good about the future. That includes the return of the men’s and women’s conference tournaments this week in Kansas City, Missouri.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Oklahoma State guard Cade Cunningham is the fourth freshman to be selected as the Big 12 player of the year by the league’s coaches. The rest of the first team includes guards Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell from regular-season champion Baylor, guard Austin Reaves from Oklahoma and West Virginia forward Derek Culver. Baylor’s Scott Drew is the coach of the year for the second season in a row. The other freshmen tabbed the top player by Big 12 coaches were Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart in 2013, Kansas State’s Michael Beasley in 2008 and Texas’ Kevin Durant in 2007.

UNDATED (AP) — Gonzaga remains entrenched at No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll in its bid to go wire-to-wire. The Zags received 61 of 63 first-place votes from a media panel as they attempt to become the first wire-to-wire No. 1 since Kentucky in 2014-15. Baylor had two first-place votes and moved back into the No. 2 slot after dropping a spot last week. Illinois, Michigan and Iowa rounded out the top 5. No. 8 Arkansas is in the top 10 for the first time since reaching No. 1 in 1994-95.

NEW YORK (AP) — Connecticut forward Isaiah Whaley and St. John’s point guard Posh Alexander have been named co-winners of the Big East Conference’s defensive player of the year award. The league’s most improved player award was shared by St. John’s guard-forward Julian Champagnie and Xavier forward Zach Freemantle. Tyler Polley of UConn was the winner of the league’s sixth man award and Mitch Ballock of Creighton received the conference’s sportsmanship award. The league’s head coaches selected the awards. They weren’t permitted to vote for their own players.

Sports

March 8th, 2021 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Caitlin Clark has been named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year, as voted on by the coaches and media, the conference office announced on Monday.

Clark also earned unanimous first team All-Big Ten honors (coaches & media) and was unanimously selected to the all-freshman team. Junior Monika Czinano also earned first team All-Big Ten accolades from the coaches and the media. Redshirt sophomore Kate Martin was named Iowa’s Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Clark, a native of West Des Moines, Iowa, is the sixth Hawkeye in program history to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and first since Jaime Printy in 2010. She is the first Hawkeye freshman to earn first team All-Big Ten honors.

In 19 conference contests this season, Clark averaged 27.7 points, 6.6 assists, 4.2, 3-pointers and shot 48.7 percent from the field. She registered double figures in all but one of Iowa’s Big Ten games, including nine 30-point games and eight additional 20-point games. Clark assisted on five or more baskets 14 times and recorded double-doubles in five conference contests.

Clark leads the nation in total points (631), points per game (27.4), 3-pointers made (92), and 3-pointers per game (4.0). She ranks second in total assists (158), field goals made (210), 3-pointers attempted (219) and triple-doubles (1), and ranks fourth in assists per game (6.9) and field goal attempts (431).

Czinano earns the second All-Big Ten honor of her career. In 19 conference games, she averaged 17.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and shot a Big Ten-best 64.7 percent from the field. She posted 17 double-figure games, including four 20-plus point performances and a career-high 34 points against No. 23 Northwestern (Jan. 28).

The Watertown, Minnesota, native leads the nation in field-goal percentage (65.7) and ranks 12th in field goals made (182).

Martin leads the Hawkeyes in assist/turnover ratio (2.47), ranking fourth in the Big Ten and 30th nationally. Against Big Ten opponents, she recorded four double-figure games and her first career double-double (Penn State; Feb. 18).

The Hawkeyes open the 2020 Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday, March 10. Iowa faces the Purdue at approximately 7:30 p.m. (CT).

All-Stars, Iowa cornfield, Arenado return spice MLB schedule

CHICAGO (AP) — Baseball returns to a full schedule this year after last season was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. On deck is the return of the All-Star Game, and baseball’s version of movie night in Iowa. St. Louis slugger Nolan Arenado also goes back to Colorado after the Rockies traded the Gold Glove third baseman to the Cardinals on Feb. 1.

The Midsummer Classic is back after last year’s game was canceled, with the event being held at Atlanta’s Truist Park. In a tribute to “Field of Dreams,” the Yankees and White Sox head to a cornfield to play at the site in Iowa where the 1989 movie was filmed.
