Iowa buckled down defensively in the second half in a victory over Minnesota in a 71-59 win. With Fran McCaffery sidelined by COVID assistant Billy Taylor was in the pilot’s seat.

The Hawkeyes trailed 38-34 at halftime.

Taylor says he challenged the Hawkeyes at halftime to pick it up defensively.

Keegan Murray had 24 points and 15 rebounds and Patrick McCaffery added 18 points as the Hawkeyes improve to 5-6 in the Big Ten.

The Iowa State women’s basketball team pulled out a 76-58 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

The Cyclones grabbed the lead early with a 28-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter and didn’t relent much the rest of the way.

Emily Ryan scored 18 points and Lexi Donarski added 17 for the Cyclones. Iowa State shot 49% from the field and 46% from three. The Cyclones improved to 20-3 overall and 9-2 in the Big 12.

Lauren Fields led Oklahoma State with 19 points as they fall to 6-14 overall and 1-10 in the Big 12.

Next up for Iowa State is a road trip to face TCU next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

For the second time in two weeks in men’s hoops on Saturday. This time the Panthers out-dueled the Bulldogs 74-69 at the Knapp Center.

Roman Penn forced overtime with a layup and free throw with 13 seconds remaining in The UNI Panthers and Drake Bulldogs went to overtime for the regulation. In overtime the Panthers held the Bulldogs to just one field goal on ten attempts. UNI converted on their last 5 free throw attempts to secure the road win.

Noah Carter led the Panthers with a game-high 23 points. Trae Berhow added 16pts and Tywhon Pickford had 8 points and 12 rebounds. The Panthers improved to 13-9 overall and 8-3 in the Valley. The win vaulted them into second place in the league and snapped Drake’s four game win streak.

Drake had five players finish in double-figures, led by 15 from Tucker DeVries. Garrett Sturtz dropped in 10 points and had 11 rebounds.

Next up for the Panthers is a Wednesday home game against Southern Illinois at 7:00 p.m.

Drake will host Missouri State on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

The Texas Longhorns outscored Iowa State 38-18 in the second half and came away with a 63-41 win in Austin on Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclones shot a miserable 28.6% from the field and only 13.3% from three point range. Iowa State also turned the ball over 18 times in the loss.

Izaiah Brockington scored 12 points and Tyrese Hunter had 10 for ISU. The Cyclones fall to 16-7 on the season.

Texas was led by 14 points each from Marcus Carr and Andrew Jones. The Longhorns move to 17-6 on the season.
