AHSTW completes undefeated WIC campaign with big win over Tri-Center

Sports

February 8th, 2022 by admin

AHSTW hit five threes in the first quarter against Tri-Center’s 1-3-1 zone and used that hot start to roll to a 72-49 win on Tuesday night. The Vikings led by 10 at the end of the first and blew the game open with a 24-8 edge in the second quarter.

AHSTW Head Coach GG Harris thought the early good shooting helped build some confidence against the zone. He liked the learning that took place against a different defensive look.

Brayden Lund had 11 points in the first quarter and finished with 21. Raydden Grobe poured in 22 points to lead all scorers and Kyle Sternberg added 14. The Vikings improved to 19-1 on the season and completed an undefeated run through the Western Iowa Conference schedule. Coach Harris thought that may be the first time that has been done in school history. He thinks the team is in a great spot at the end of the season.

The Vikings have one final regular season test at Denison-Schleswig on Thursday before hosting a first-round district game next Monday. We’ll have that district game on KJAN.

Tri-Center was led by 16 points from Michael Turner. The Trojans dropped to 12-9 on the season. They will now prep for a 1A first round playoff game against Woodbine on Monday.

AHSTW girls rally for win at Tri-Center

Sports

February 8th, 2022 by admin

The AHSTW Lady Vikes outscored Tri-Center 14-3 in the third quarter to climb out of a five-point halftime deficit, ultimately pushing their way to a 44-30 win.

AHSTW had the lead early in the game but Tri-Center pulled ahead late first quarter and held the edge until late in the third. Once the Lady Vikes seized back control, momentum snowballed in their direction. AHSTW Head Coach Jill Vanderhoof said the key was becoming the aggressor in the second half.

Delaney Goshorn got the offense sparked a bit in the second half with 17 of her game-high 25 points after the break. She connected on 5 threes in the game. Ellie Peterson had a big game with 10 points and a high number of deflections and blocks on the defensive end. Coach Vanderhoof said it was great to see that defensive effort pay off all over the floor.

The Lady Vikes improved to 8-13 on the season and will now prep for the postseason. They will host Missouri Valley in a 2A Region 8 game on Saturday.

Tri-Center was led by 11 points from Alexis Flaherty. The Trojans fall to 7-14 on the season. They will face Coon Rapids-Bayard in a 1A Region 2 first round game on Thursday.

Two additional community trout ponds stocked last week

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

February 8th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released between 1,000 to 2,000 rainbow trout at  Moorland Pond (Fort Dodge) and Big Lake (Council Bluffs) as part of its cool weather trout program that brings trout to areas that cannot support them during the summer.  All winter/spring community trout stockings will be unannounced this year. Check the DNR website at www.iowadnr.gov/trout and watch for future press releases to find out when the remaining community trout locations have been stocked.

The winter/spring community trout stockings are a great place to take kids to catch their first fish. A small hook with a nightcrawler or corn under a small bobber or small simple spinners, such as a Panther Martin or Mepps, is all you need to get in on the fun. Bringing trout to cities and towns offers a “close to home” option for Iowans who might not travel to the coldwater streams in northeast Iowa to discover trout fishing.

The popular program is supported by the sales of the trout fee. Anglers need a valid fishing license and pay the trout fee to fish for or possess trout. The daily limit is five trout per licensed angler with a possession limit of 10.  Children age 15 or younger can fish for trout with a properly licensed adult, but they must limit their catch to one daily limit. The child can purchase a trout fee which will allow them to catch their own limit.

Find more information about trout fishing in Iowa on the DNR trout fishing webpage.
