No. 25 Iowa women await return of injured starters

Iowa women’s coach Lisa Bluder is not sure when McKenna Warnock and Gabbie Marshall may return to the starting lineup. Both have missed the last two games, including Sunday night’s 98-90 loss at sixth ranked Michigan and may not be available Wednesday night when the Hawkeyes host Minnesota.

The Hawkeyes are down to seven healthy players right now.

With two starters out Caitlin Clark had a career high 46 points in the loss at Michigan.

Clark believes in the long run it will make the Hawkeyes a deeper.

Surging Northern Iowa in thick of MVC title chase

Winners of nine of their last 11 the UNI Panthers are in the thick of the Missouri Valley title chase heading into Wednesday’s game at home against Southern Illinois. The Panthers are 9-3 in the Valley and are currently second behind Loyola.

That’s Panther coach Ben Jacobson who says improvement on defense has been a big factor.

Jacobson says improved health has also been a factor.

Iowa State visits West Virginia Tuesday night

Two teams desperate for a win collide in Morgantown tonight (Tue. night), as Iowa State visits West Virginia. The Cyclones are 3-7 in the Big 12 while the Mountaineers are 2-7. ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger says he is not focused on how the outcome might effect their NCAA resume.

Otzelberger says the Cyclones will need to play with a sense of urgency.

Otzelberger expects both teams to be motivated.

Otzelberger says more patience and better shots will help the Cyclones score more points. They managed only 41 in Saturday’s loss at Texas.

Clark earns Big Ten Player of the Week honors again

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa sophomore Caitlin Clark was named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Clark has tallied 30-career Big Ten weekly honors – 13 freshman, 11 player and six honor roll. This week’s award is the sixth Big Ten Player of the Week honor this season for Clark.

Clark averaged 38.7 points, 9.3 assists and 6.3 rebounds in three games, drawing 21 fouls and making 18 free throws. The sophomore registered two 40-point games over ranked opponents, including 43 against No. 23 Ohio State and a career-high 46 points over No. 6 Michigan on the Wolverines’ home court to set the arena record for most points by a woman – the third arena record that Clark owns (Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Crisler Center, Pinnacle Bank Arena).

In Iowa’s, 98-90, road loss to No. 6 Michigan with only seven active student-athletes, including being down two starters, the Hawkeyes battled back from a 25-point deficit in the third quarter to end the game down by eight led by Clark’s arena-record setting 46 points. Clark registered her 12th double-double of the season, adding 10 assists against the Wolverines. She also tallied four rebounds and three steals and drew 10 fouls.

The Des Moines, Iowa, native registered her fifth season and sixth career triple double in Iowa’s road win over Wisconsin with 27 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. Clark’s six career triple-doubles ties former Hawkeye Sam Logic’s Big Ten record (2011-15) for most in their career and ties fifth most single season (5) and career (6) triple-doubles in NCAA Division I history.

Against No. 23 Ohio State, Clark tallied 43 points, including seven made 3-pointers, shooting 50 percent (7-14) from beyond the arc.

Clark and the Hawkeyes host Minnesota on Wednesday, Feb. 9 inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT) on B1G+.

No. 21 Iowa women fall at No. 6 Michigan

A late rally came up short as the 21st ranked Iowa Hawkeye women lost at sixth ranked Michigan 98-90. Caitlin Clark scored 25 of her career high 46 points in the fourth quarter as the Hawkeyes cut a 25 point deficit to five.

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. The Hawkeyes were without injured starters Gabbie Marshall and McKenna Warnock and were outrebounded 49-30.

Iowa scored 36 points in the fourth quarter.

Iowa is 9-3 in the Big Ten.

Big second half lifts Iowa over Minnesota

Iowa buckled down defensively in the second half in a victory over Minnesota in a 71-59 win. With Fran McCaffery sidelined by COVID assistant Billy Taylor was in the pilot’s seat.

The Hawkeyes trailed 38-34 at halftime.

Taylor says he challenged the Hawkeyes at halftime to pick it up defensively.

Keegan Murray had 24 points and 15 rebounds and Patrick McCaffery added 18 points as the Hawkeyes improve to 5-6 in the Big Ten.

Iowa State women roll past Oklahoma State

The Iowa State women’s basketball team pulled out a 76-58 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

The Cyclones grabbed the lead early with a 28-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter and didn’t relent much the rest of the way.

Emily Ryan scored 18 points and Lexi Donarski added 17 for the Cyclones. Iowa State shot 49% from the field and 46% from three. The Cyclones improved to 20-3 overall and 9-2 in the Big 12.

Lauren Fields led Oklahoma State with 19 points as they fall to 6-14 overall and 1-10 in the Big 12.

Next up for Iowa State is a road trip to face TCU next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

UNI wins overtime battle over Drake

For the second time in two weeks in men’s hoops on Saturday. This time the Panthers out-dueled the Bulldogs 74-69 at the Knapp Center.

Roman Penn forced overtime with a layup and free throw with 13 seconds remaining in The UNI Panthers and Drake Bulldogs went to overtime for the regulation. In overtime the Panthers held the Bulldogs to just one field goal on ten attempts. UNI converted on their last 5 free throw attempts to secure the road win.

Noah Carter led the Panthers with a game-high 23 points. Trae Berhow added 16pts and Tywhon Pickford had 8 points and 12 rebounds. The Panthers improved to 13-9 overall and 8-3 in the Valley. The win vaulted them into second place in the league and snapped Drake’s four game win streak.

Drake had five players finish in double-figures, led by 15 from Tucker DeVries. Garrett Sturtz dropped in 10 points and had 11 rebounds.

Next up for the Panthers is a Wednesday home game against Southern Illinois at 7:00 p.m.

Drake will host Missouri State on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
