Sports

March 20th, 2022 by admin

An ugly game but a sweet finish for Iowa State as the Cyclones are headed to the Sweet 16. ISU’s defense smothered Wisconsin in a 54-49 win in Milwaukee.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger. A year after posting a 2-22 record the Cyclones head back to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016.

The Badgers shot less than 30 percent and made only two of 22 from three point range.

Gabe Kalscheur led the Cyclones with 22 points.

Kalscheur played against the Badgers while at Minnesota.

Izaiah Brockington added 10 points as the Cyclones improve to 22-12 on the season.

The Iowa women faltered late in an NCAA upset loss at home.

Rob Brooks with the call on the Hawkeye Network. Creighton closed the game on an 8-2 run to stun the eighth ranked Hawkeyes 64-62 in Iowa City. Iowa transfer Lauren Jensen led Creighton with 19 points and her late three pointer was the game winner.

Jensen’s heroics lead Creighton to a first-ever trip to the Sweet-16.

In front of a record setting crowd the Hawkeyes came up short in a bid for a third straight trip to the Sweet-16.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. A season that included a Big Ten regular season and tournament title ends with a record of 24-8.

Iowa shot less than 36 percent and made only five of 22 from three point range.

That’s Iowa sophomore Caitlin Clark who was limited to 15 points on four of 19 shooting.

Sports

March 20th, 2022 by admin

The Creighton Bluejays gave the Kansas Jayhawks all they could handle on Saturday afternoon but ultimately came up short 79-72 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

It was a back and forth game for much of the contest and Kansas led by 1 at half 39-38. The Jayhawks went on a run to start the second half Creighton quickly climbed back in but Kansas made some key plays in the last couple of minutes. Creighton was within 1 with just over a minute left when Trey Alexander turned the ball over and Ochai Agbaji was right there for Kansas to grab the steal and throw down a dunk on the other end. Crieghton wouldn’t scored after that and KU hit four free throws to seal the win.

Arthur Kaluma led Creighton with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Alex O’Connell had 16 and Trey Alexander had 14 points and 9 assists. In his final college basketball game Ryan Hawkins scored 14 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and had 2 assists. The Jays end the season at 23-12.

Remy Martin came off the bench to score 20 points and grab 7 rebounds to lead Kansas. Agbaji added 15 points and 8 boards. The Jayhawks improved to 30-6 and advance to face to face Providence in the Sweet 16.

Hawkins finished his lone season at Creighton with 482 points, 272 rebounds, 53 assists, 32 steals, and 13 blocks. Hawkins finishes his college basketball career with 2,580 points, 1,220 rebounds, 257 steals, 229 assists, and 82 blocks.

Jacob Warner advances to NCAA Semifinals

Sports

March 19th, 2022 by admin

DETROIT — University of Iowa senior Jacob Warner advanced to the finals of the 2022 NCAA Championships following a 6-4 semifinal win Friday night at Little Caesars Arena.

Warner, the No. 6 seed at 197 pounds, scored four points in the third period to defeat Wyoming’s second-ranked Stephen Buchanan and advance to the NCAA finals for the first time in his career.

After a scoreless first period, Warner escaped to start the second, surrendered a takedown, and then escaped again in the closing seconds to enter the third period tied, 2-2. In the top position to start the third, Warner separated himself from Buchanan with four nearfall points to build a 6-2 lead. He gave up an escape and was dinged a point for stalling to make the final score, 6-4.

“I wrestled him last year and turned him so I knew I could do something on top,” Warner said. “My last two matches were won by being able to ride so I knew it was going to be a big factor in this match.

“All week I was working on getting that wrist tight. I got that wrist and as soon as I got it seatbelted to his hip I knew I could do something with it. I didn’t get it right away. I had to stick with it, keep elevating and going into him, and it made the difference.”

Warner advanced to the finals to extend Iowa’s streak of consecutive NCAA Championship finals appearances to 32 straight. He outscored his four opponents 19-5 to reach the finals, where he will face Penn State’s top-ranked Gabe Dean.

“Finish the wrist tilt today, good job. Finish the match, good job. Now we have to finish the tournament,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “We are in the finals. Good job Jacob Warner.”

ALL-AMERICAN ROUND

Alex Marinelli, Michael Kemerer and Tony Cassioppi all picked up wins in the Round of 12 to secure All-America honors. Cassioppi earned a spot on the stand with a 4-0 win in his opening match, but dropped his second match of the night, 11-5, and will wrestle for seventh-place Saturday.

Marinelli became Iowa’s 25th four-time All-American with a 6-2 win in his first match and advanced to the consolation semifinals with a 4-2 in his second match.

Kemerer used a third-period takedown to clinch a 5-2 win in his first consolation match, securing the All-America honor and becoming the first five-time All-American in program history. Kemerer backed up his first win with a 3-1 overtime victory in the consolation quarters.

“Two tough wins, each guy,” Brands said. “There is no gimmie round. There is no slouch. You have to be ready. When you come back after (a loss), especially an upset, the emotions, you have to even them out. The thing that sucks is what sucks. The thing that you can control is go compete at your best the next time out.”

Austin DeSanto will join Marinelli and Kemerer in the consolation semifinals. DeSanto, seeded No. 5 at 133, surrendered a takedown to top-seeded Roman Bravo-Young with nine seconds left in the match to drop a 3-1 decision.

The Hawkeyes enter Saturday in fourth place with 62.0 team points. Penn State leads the team race with 108.0 points. Michigan (84.5) and Arizona State (63.5) round out the top four.

UP NEXT

The NCAA Championships continue Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT). ESPNU and WatchESPN are providing television and online coverage of the medal rounds. The finals begin Saturday at 6 p.m. on ESPN.

Carr opened the night by beating No. 6 Jared Franek of North Dakota State 4-3 in the Blood Round. Trailing 3-2, Carr used a takedown with :26 left to secure his sixth career victory over Franek. The two have met each other in the last two Big 12 Championship matches. Carr won his second match of the night by medical forfeit over No. 11 Austin O’Connor (North Carolina). Coleman will face Cornell’s 11th-seeded Jonathan Loew in the seventh-place match.

Bastida had a pair of one-point matches, as he advanced to the consolation semifinals. A late takedown first period gave Bastida a 2-0 lead after one. Woodley escaped in the second, as Bastida led 2-1 into the third period. Bastida opened the final period with a takedown, but Woodley countered with an escape and takedown with 1:01 left to tie the match. Bastida escaped with :47 left for the win. In the win over Bulsak, Bastida led 2-1 after the first period with a takedown with :32 left in the first period. Bastida had a takedown in the second period, as he held on to win 4-3 after a neutral start to the third. Bastida will face No. 2 Stephen Buchanan of Wyoming in the consolation semifinals. Buchanan is 2-0 against Bastida this year, having beaten Bastida 6-4 (SV) in the dual and winning by fall in 6:57 at the Big 12 Championship.

Penn State leads the team race with 108 points, while Michigan is second with 84.5. Arizona State is third with 63.5. The Cyclones moved up to 19th with 28.5 points going into the final day.
