DETROIT — The University of Iowa wrestling team wrestling team advanced eight wrestlers to the round of 16 Thursday afternoon at the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Little Caesars Arena.

Iowa scored bonus points in three of its eight wins, including a technical fall by Austin DeSanto at 133, a fall from Max Murin at 149 and a major decision from Jacob Warner at 197.

DeSanto gave up an early takedown but responded with 13 straight first-period points at 133 pounds. He scored six more in the second before terminating the match in four minutes, nine seconds with a 19-3 technical fall, his 11th of the season.

Murin was leading 10-3 before securing a fall in four minutes, 48 seconds at 149. The fall was his first of the season. Warner piled up over four minutes of riding time in an 8-0 major decision at 197. The major was his third of the postseason and sixth of the season, tying a single-season career high.

Returning NCAA finalists Jaydin Eierman and Michael Kemerer were two of five Hawkeyes to move on with a decision. Eierman scored four takedowns in an 11-4 win at 141. Kemerer scored a takedown in the first 30 seconds and added points for an escape and riding time in a 4-0 shutout at 174.

Kaleb Young’s second-period takedown was the difference in a 3-2 decision at 157. Alex Marinelli scored a pair of takedowns in a 7-2 win at 165, and Tony Cassioppi closed the dual with a 4-0 shutout at 285.

Freshman Drake Ayala and sophomore Abe Assad both dropped decisions in their NCAA debuts. Ayala fell 12-9 at 125 and Assad, who qualified for the national tournament before it was cancelled in 2020, lost 6-3 at 184.

The Hawkeyes have 12.5 team points, tying Michigan for second place. Penn State leads the team race with 15.5 points.

DETROIT – Three Iowa State wrestlers picked up wins Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Championships, as they advanced to the second round Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena. The second round of the NCAA Championships starts at 6 p.m. (CT) and will be available on ESPN.

David Carr (157), Marcus Coleman (184) and Yonger Bastida (197) all earned wins to open the day. Their victories sent them to the second round, which will be held Thursday evening. Carr’s victory was the 1,600^th all-time win by a Cyclone at the NCAA Championships.

Penn State leads the team race after the first session with 15.5 points, while Iowa and Michigan are tied for second with 12.5 points. Iowa State is 18^th with 5.5 points.

The Iowa Hawkeyes shot a cold 6 of 29 from three-point range and just 36.4% from the field and fell to the Richmond Spiders 67-63 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

Richmond held a slim lead for much of the first half and were up 29-28 at the break. The Spiders made enough plays to build a 6 point advantage late and held on for the win. Jacob Gilyard led the way with 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Tyler Burton had 18 points and 11 rebounds and came through with 4 huge late free throws to seal the win. Richmond improves to 24-12 and advance to face 4th seeded Providence in the second round on Saturday.

Iowa was led by 21 points and 9 rebounds from Keegan Murray. Patrick McCaffery was the only other player in double figures with 18 points. The Hawkeyes end the season with a mark of 26-10.

Creighton senior and Atlantic alum Ryan Hawkins was honored as a USBWA All-District 6 Player on Wednesday. Hawkins was joined on the District 6 team by Ochai Agbaji of Kansas, Christian Braun of Kansas, Nijel Pack of Kansas State, Izaiah Brockington of Iowa State, AJ Green of UNI, and Keegan Murray of Iowa.

Hawkins has averaged 14 points and 8 rebounds per game this season so far for Creighton. He has shot 44.1% from the field to lead the Jays to the NCAA Tournament where they take on San Diego State tonight at 6:27 p.m. on truTV.

Agbaji was named the District Player of the Year. Bill Self was tabbed as the District Coach of the Year.

Former Drake Coach and current Colorado State Coach Nico Medved was named the District 8 Coach of the Year. Former SWCC Coach and current Wake Forest Coach Steve Forbes was named District 3 Coach of the Year.

The UNI men’s basketball team advanced at the NIT on Wednesday night with an 80-68 win at St. Louis. The Panthers got 21 poitns, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists from star guard AJ Green to lead the way. Noah Carter added 19 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds while Trae Berhow chipped in 18 points and 7 boards.

The Panthers improved to 20-11 on the season and will now square off against BYU in the second round on Saturday. That game will be in Provo at 8:00 p.m. Central Time and be televised through ESPN+. The Cougars advanced with an 93-72 win over Long Beach State.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa women’s basketball sophomore Caitlin Clark was named a first team USBWA All-American, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced Thursday. The honor is the second of her career after earning first team USBWA All-America status as a freshman a year ago.

The USBWA has named a women’s All-America Team since the 1987-88 season. Since the 2017-18 season, the USBWA has expanded the team to honor 15 players on three teams, regardless of position. The All-America Team is selected by the USBWA board after voting from the entire membership and the honor is based on performance during the regular season and conference tournaments.

The Des Moines, Iowa, native leads the nation in assists per game (7.9), total assists (236), points per game (27.4), total points (821), free throws made (189), triple doubles (5) and 30-point games (11).

Clark registered five triple-doubles this season, leading the country in most career triple-doubles by an active player with six. Clark’s six career triple-doubles ties former Hawkeye Sam Logic’s Big Ten record (2011-15) for most in a career and ties for the fifth most single season (5) and career (6) triple-doubles in NCAA Division I history.

In January, Clark joined the likes of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, James Hardin, Luka Dončić and Giannis Antetokounmpo as the only NBA, WNBA, Division I men’s and women’s basketball to record back-to-back 30-point triple doubles since 2000. She is one of 10 women’s basketball players (15 times) to register back-to-back triple doubles in their careers — the only NCAA player (male or female) to do so with 30-plus points in the pair.

Clark broke the 1,000-career point barrier against Evansville in early January and became the fastest Division I player (men’s or women’s) to reach 1,500 career points over the last 20 seasons, reaching the feat in 56 games.

Clark set a career-high 46 points against No. 6 Michigan, registering her 12th double-double of the season with 10 assists and breaking her third women’s basketball arena scoring record. She now holds the scoring records at Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena (44), Michigan’s Crisler Center (46) and Nebraska’s Pinnacle Bank Arena (39).

Clark was named Big Ten Player of the Year and Big Ten Tournament MVP, while earning unanimous first team All-Big Ten honors and an All-Big Ten Tournament spot. She was named a Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year finalist, Dawn Staley Award finalist, Naismith semifinalist and to the WBCA Wade Trophy Midseason Watch List and John R. Wooden Award National Ballot Top-15. She is a 2021-22 first team AP All-American and first team CoSIDA Academic All-American.

AMES, Iowa – Ashley Joens was named a USBWA All-American for the second-consecutive season. Joens earned Second-Team honors on the heels of a Third-Team nod in 2020-21.

Joens put together another standout season at Iowa State. The senior led the Cyclones averaging 20.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game en route to her third-consecutive unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection. She also leads the team with a career-best 84 triples and is shooting at a 37.2 percent clip.

The Iowa City, Iowa native has helped Iowa State to a 26-6 overall record, while the Cyclones’ 25 regular season victories set a new program record. Iowa State has also been ranked in the AP Top-10 for much of the 2021-22 season, climbing as high as No. 6.

Joens also cemented herself as the most prolific scorer in Iowa State history with 2,307 career points and counting, holding Iowa State’s top mark in the record book and ranking ninth in the Big 12 record book. She also ranks third in school history with 1,052 career rebounds.

Joens’ was also named a second Team All-American by the Associated Press earlier this week. Last season, Joens was also named the Cheryl Miller Award winner, honoring the nation’s best small forward.

The 16th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes look to continue a late season run this (Thursday) afternoon by taking on Richmond in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes are the fifth seed in the Midwest Regional after winning the Big Ten Tournament and coach Fran McCaffery’s team has been a trendy pick to make a deep tournament run.

After playing Big Ten teams for the past two and a half months the challenge now is to get ready for an unfamiliar opponent.

Richmond senior guard Jacob Gilyard is the all-time NCAA leader in steals and triggered a Richmond defense that stepped up last week in winning the Atlantic-10 Tournament.

McCaffery says Richmond’s experience is a concern. The Spiders have six players who used an extra year provided by COVID and four of them have topped more than a thousand points in their career.

After winning a Big Ten title senior guard Jordan Bohannon would like to cap his career with a deep tournament run.

The Hawkeyes have won nine of their last 10 games, including four straight last week in Indianapolis to win the Big Ten Tournament.

Richmond coach Chris Mooney says his team will need to limit Iowa’s fast break points this (Thursday) afternoon. The 11th seeded Spiders play the fifth seeded Hawkeyes in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Buffalo.

Mooney says the Hawkeyes will shoot threes off the break.

Mooney says they need to find a way to contain Iowa sophomore Keegan Murray.

ST. LOUIS, Mo., March 16, 2022 – The St. Louis Cardinals, in conjunction with Major League Baseball’s league-wide release this afternoon, announced their revised 2022 regular season schedule.  The team’s Home Opener versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, April 7, at 3:15 PM CT remains unchanged.

Under the revised schedule, which features re-scheduled dates for five Cardinals road games originally slated between March 31-April 6, the regular season has been extended by three days with the final day of the season now scheduled for Wednesday, October 5.

The Cardinals originally scheduled three-game series at Pittsburgh on March 31-April 3 will now take place during the additional three days of the MLB regular season on October 3-5 at 5:35 PM (October 5th game time to be determined).

The Cardinals originally scheduled two-game series at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs on April 4-6 will be made up as split-doubleheaders on two previously scheduled Cubs road dates; the first on Saturday, June 4, at 12:20 PM and the second on Tuesday, August 23, at 1:20 PM.

Additionally, start times for Cardinals home games vs. the Pirates on Monday, April 11 (previously 6:45 PM) and Sunday, October 2 (previously 2:15 PM), have changed to 1:15 PM.
