Sports

April 7th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

The annual PGA Tournament in the Quad Cities is earlier this year and so is the start of its fundraising campaign. The John Deere Classic’s Birdies for Charity kicked off this week and director Micaela Booth says because of the pandemic, pledge forms will continue to be available online, instead of pre-printed.

Birdies for Charity raised nearly 12.6 million dollars for 470 charities within 125 miles of the Quad Cities. Booth says another change is Birdies for Charity is allowing nonprofits to sign up for the first time since before the pandemic.

The annual Birdies for Charity contest is to guess the number of birdies scored during the John Deere Classic. The prize is a two-year lease for a new Lexus. So, the deadline to submit for contest entries is June 10th. Final pledges will be due on July 1st, the third day tournament.

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Atlantic City Council, Wednesday evening recognized the remarkable achievements of the Atlantic High School and Middle School Archery Teams, and their Coach, Clint Roland. Both teams are sending archers to Sandy, Utah April 28-30th, for the Western Nationals. The Coach said Atlantic is sending the entire High School Squad to the competition, and 21 Middle School students. Their trip is coming on the heels of their performance at the National Archery in the Schools’ (NASP) Iowa State Archery Tournament.

He said they’ve always qualified at the Middle School level but never finished in the top 10, until now.

He said some people he spoke with doubted the High School archers would do as well as he predicted, but again, those people were proven wrong.

Austin Ash to transfer from Iowa and use COVID year

Sports

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa men’s basketball shooting guard Austin Ash has entered the transfer portal. The redshirt senior, and Iowa graduate, will take advantage of the bonus COVID year of eligibility that is available to student-athletes who were on rosters during the 2019-20 season.

“I couldn’t be more grateful for my time at the University of Iowa,” said Ash. “I can’t thank Coach (Fran) McCaffery and the other coaches enough for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to be Hawkeye. Raising the Big Ten trophy in Indianapolis with my teammates is a memory that I will never forget.”

Ash (6-foot-3, 180 pounds) was a walk-on his first four seasons, including redshirting as a true freshman in 2017-18, before earning a scholarship prior to the 2021-22 season. The native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was an integral part of four NCAA Tournament teams (2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID). He saw action in 44 combined games over the past four seasons. Ash posted season bests in points (52), assists (11), rebounds (10), 3-pointers (8), and free throws made (10), and missed only four free-throw attempts last year.

“Austin was a valuable teammate on and off the floor the last five years,” said McCaffery. “He is a Division I player who didn’t see the minutes he deserved because we were loaded at the guard position. Austin will be a great asset wherever he goes because he is a great shooter, doesn’t make mistakes and has tremendous character. We wish him nothing but the best.”
