Hawkeyes down Bradley in 11 innings

Sports

April 7th, 2022 by admin

PEORIA, Ill. – Senior Brett McCleary’s sacrifice fly in the 11th inning plated the go-ahead run and redshirt junior Duncan Davitt pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half to send the University of Iowa baseball team to a 9-8 extra-inning victory over Bradley on Wednesday night at Dozer Park.

It was the Hawkeyes’ seventh win this season when overcoming a deficit, as the team improved to 15-10 overall.  Iowa, who is 8-3 over its last 10 games, is a season-high five games over .500.

After trading single runs in the ninth and 10th innings, the Hawkeyes loaded the bases in the 11th on an Izaya Fullard walk, Andy Nelson single and Kyle Huckstorf hit by pitch. McCleary put Iowa up 9-8 with a sacrifice fly, but Bradley got out of the inning without any more damage after getting 1-5 double play following a Brendan Sher line out.

Redshirt junior Duncan Davitt shut the door on the Braves in the bottom half with a 1-2-3 inning.  Davitt earned his third win after pitching the final 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit, while fanning three.

Iowa took a 7-6 lead in the ninth when redshirt sophomore Peyton Williams walked, stole second and scored on a Bradley throwing error with two outs following Nelson’s infield single.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes return to action Saturday, hosting Illinois in a doubleheader at Duane Banks Field.  The start time is TBA and will be announced later this week.

Iowa coaches talk defensive stability

Sports

April 7th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Continuity is credited for Iowa’s success on the defensive side of the football. The Hawkeyes regularly rank near the top of the Big Ten on defense and it has been the key to the program’s success. Phil Parker joined the Iowa staff in 1999 and has been the coordinator since 2012. He also credits his working relationship with linebackers coach Seth Wallace and defensive line coach Kelvin Bell.

Iowa set a program record with 25 interceptions last season and Parker says their style of zone coverage and an effective pass rush were major factors.

Bell says the Hawkeyes have been running the same defense for more than two decades.

Linebackers coach Seth Wallace says it begins with stability.

Wallace says the Hawkeyes are generating turnovers with being forced to gamble.

The Hawkeyes announced the will close out spring drills on April 23rd with an open practice.

Hunter Dekkers takes over at Iowa State

Sports

April 7th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Hunter Dekkers is ready to take over as Iowa State’s starting quarterback. The former West Sioux standout appeared in seven games the past two years behind starter Brock Purdy. It is a spot Purdy has manned since October of 2018.

That’s Cyclone offensive coordinator Tom Manning who says Dekkers’ arm strength is obvious but now it is about running the offense.

Dekkers says the goal this spring is to move the offense forward.

Dekkers says the offense received a big lift when top receiver Xavier Hutchinson decided to return for next season.
