Iowa State football closes spring drills

Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell feels his team had a productive spring. The Cyclones lost several key players from last year’s team that opened in the top ten before stumbling to a 7-6 record. The close drills with an open practice at Gilbert High School.

The expectations won’t be as high for a team that is a mix of veterans and newcomers.

That includes at quarterback where Hunter Dekkers takes over for four year starter Brock Purdy. Campbell says they tried to put the former West Sioux star in some challenging spots.

Campbell says the key for Dekkers will be handling the adversity that comes with playing quarterback.

The Cyclones open next season on September third at home against Southeast Missouri.

Iowa downs Minnesota 2-1; Clinches Series Win

Sports

April 16th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Back-to-back RBI singles from Izaya Fullard and Ben Tallman in the fifth inning propelled the University of Iowa baseball team to a 2-1 come-from-behind series-clinching victory over Minnesota on Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.

The win moves the Hawkeyes’ record to 19-12 overall and 5-3 in Big Ten play heading into Sunday’s series finale.

Sophomore Michael Seegers started the fifth with a one-out single to right field.  After Seegers stole second, Fullard bounced a two-out single up the middle and the ball caromed off Brady Counsell’s glove into shallow left field.  Seegers scored on the play and Fullard moved to second on the throw.

The heady base running paid off as Tallman followed with a hit to nearly the same spot, singling home Fullard to give the Hawkeyes a 2-1 lead.

“There was a big two-out hit by Izaya to get us back to even and I knew I needed to follow up with that,” said Tallman. “I struck out on two off-speed pitches earlier in the game, so I got up in the count and was looking for a fastball I could handle.  That was my approach and I got it done.”

The Hawkeyes will go for the weekend sweep Sunday, hosting the Gophers in the series finale at 1:05 p.m. (CT).

Aubrey Joens leaving ISU

Sports

April 16th, 2022 by admin

Iowa State junior guard Aubrey Joens announced on Friday that she will enter the transfer portal. Joens started 17 games over the past two seasons and averaged 5.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest.

Joens did see some of her minutes dwindle toward the end of the season and it appears she is seeking a larger role at another school.

The announcement came as a bit of a surprise because her older sister Ashley recently announced that she is returning to Iowa State next season to take advantage of her extra year of eligibility. Her younger sister Kelsey is also committed to play at Iowa State in the 2023-24 season.
