Iowa baseball team visits No. 8 Rutgers beginning today (Friday)

Sports

April 22nd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeye baseball team has a difficult assignment with a visit to Big Ten leading Rutgers beginning this (Friday) afternoon. The eighth ranked Scarlet Knights have been the surprise of college baseball. They are 31-7 and had a 16-game win streak snapped with 9-7 loss mid-week loss to Princeton.

That’s Iowa coach Rick Heller. Rutgers is 11-1 in the Big Ten while the Hawkeyes have won five straight games and are 6-3 in the league race after sweeping Minnesota.

The Scarlet Knights rank in the top ten nationally in hitting, earned run average and fielding.

Heller says Rutgers is confident and has remained healthy.

The series begins with a single game this afternoon.

Iowa closes spring drills on Saturday

Sports

April 22nd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa running backs coach Ladell Betts says the competition between the Iowa and defense this spring has gotten heated at times. The Hawkeyes close out spring drills Saturday morning with an open practice in Kinnick Stadium.

Betts likes the way the offense has competed in practice.

There is a different look at running back. With Tyler Goodson leaving early to pursue an NFL career sophomores Gavin Williams and LeShon Williams are the featured backs. That duo combined for 140 yards of rushing in a Citrus Bowl loss to Kentucky.

LeShon Williams says the Citrus Bowl experience was a plus for both.

Spring football winds down at Drake

Sports

April 22nd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Drake football coach Todd Stepsis would love to have one starting quarterback next season. Because of injury and illness the Bulldogs had five different starters during last year’s 2-9 campaign. Junior Ian Corwin has the most experience. He won the job as a freshman in 2019 but has struggled with injuries.

The Bulldogs close out spring drills with an intra squad game on Saturday.

Midwest League rivals to play at Field of Dreams

Sports

April 22nd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Midwest League rivals the Quad Cities River Bandits and Cedar Rapids Kernels will collide August ninth near the “Field of Dreams” movie site in Dyersville. It is the same site that hosted last year’s game between the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox. River Bandits General Manager Joe Kubly says discussions about a possible game had been ongoing for a several months.

Both teams will wear throw back jerseys honoring their early days. The Kernels will play as the Cedar Rapids Bunnies while the River Bandits will be the Davenport Blue Sox.

Kernels General Manager Scott Wilson says it will be part of a busy week in Dyersville.

The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds will play on August 11th. The history of baseball in Cedar Rapids dates back to 1890 and the team was known as the Bunnies for nearly three decades.
