Cardinals recall infielder Brendan Donovan; Nootbaar optioned to Memphis

Sports

ST. LOUIS, MO., April 25, 2022 – Prior to today’s game, the St. Louis Cardinals have recalled infielder Brendan Donovan from Memphis (AAA).  Outfielder Lars Nootbaar was optioned to Memphis following Sunday’s game in Cincinnati.

Donovan, 25, the Cardinals seventh round selection (213th overall) out of the University of South Alabama in 2018, was batting .298 with a home run, six RBI and three doubles through 16 games.  He has hit safely in 14-of-16 games and is batting .421 (8-19) against left-handed pitching with a .364 mark with runners in scoring position.

Born in Wurzburg, Germany, as his father was a Deputy Commander for the United States Army at their Combat Readiness Center, Donovan will become the seventh Cardinals German-born player.  He will join the most recent, Edwin Jackson (2011), who was born in West Germany.

Donovan was a 2021 Arizona Fall League Rising Star and was selected to the 28-player roster for Germany before they canceled the 2021 World Baseball Classic.  He traveled to Los Angeles for the 2021 National League Wild Card game as a member of the Taxi Squad, but was not on the active roster.

Nootbaar played in seven games for the Cardinals after beginning the season on the Opening Day roster and is compiled a .125 batting average with one RBI.

Donovan would be the second Cardinals player to make his Major League debut in 2022 and the seventh to make his Cardinals debut this season if he appears in a game prior to Packy Naughton. He will wear uniform No. 33.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery announced on Monday that he has elevated Courtney Eldridge to assistant coach, replacing the position previously occupied by Billy Taylor.

Eldridge has been on the Hawkeyes’ staff the past six seasons, serving as the program’s video coordinator from 2017-19 and director of recruiting and player development the last three years.

“I have had a relationship with Courtney for a long time,” said McCaffery. “He played for me at UNCG, has been on my staff, and has a great relationship with our players. He is a tireless worker, who has tremendous character and experience that will benefit our program.”

“I am thankful to Coach McCaffery and Gary Barta for this opportunity,” said Eldridge. “I have been in Iowa City the past six years, and I know how special this community and program is. I am excited to mentor the student-athletes in our program.”

His first three years as video coordinator, Eldridge assisted with film breakdown and compiling player development edits. He also organized in-depth statistical data and various analytic measures for the coaching staff.

Eldridge played basketball at UNC-Greensboro (UNCG) from 1998-2002 under Coach McCaffery, followed by a 12-year professional career in Brazil, Poland, Italy, Belarus, Turkey, and the Dominican Republic. In addition to working men’s basketball youth camps, he was a high school boys basketball coach at East Boston High School and Saint Joseph Prep School in Brighton, Massachusetts.

Eldridge helped the Spartans post three winning seasons, including a 20-win campaign in 2002. He was part of the Spartans’ 2001 NCAA Tournament team that won the Southern Conference Tournament title and finished with a 19-12 record. As a senior, he led the Spartans to the SoCon North Division co-championship and an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament with a 20-11 record.

Eldridge was a two-time SoCon First Team selection, as well as a two-time SoCon All-Tournament recipient. He is the Spartans’ all-time leader in assists (584) and is third in program history in steals (226). Eldridge is UNCG’s single season assists leader with 182 in set in 2002, while also holding the second (179 in 2001) highest mark in school history. His 82 steals in 2001 and 78 in 2002 rank third and fifth in a season, respectively. Eldridge is 13th all-time in UNCG scoring history with 1,329 career points and fourth all-time with 395 career free throws made. Eldridge is one of three UNCG greats to have their jersey retired; his No. 23 jersey was retired on April 24, 2002.

Iowa football completes spring drills

Sports

April 25th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Spencer Petras leads the quarterback race at the end of spring practice. The Hawkeyes closed out drills with an open practice over the weekend. Petras, Alex Padilla and Joe Labas are competing for the starting job.

Petras has started 19 games the past two seasons while Padilla started three games last season while Petras was injured. Labas is a redshirt freshman. Offensive lineman Connor Colby feels the experience he gained last season will be a plus. The former Cedars Kennedy standout become the first true freshman to start on the offensive line since 2017.

Colby made 11 starts at guard last season for an Iowa offense that struggled with inexperience up front.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 8 Rutgers put up nine runs in the first four innings en route to a 10-4 victory over the University of Iowa baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Bainton Field.  The Hawkeyes won two of three games during the three-game series.

Rutgers’ win snaps Iowa’s season-long seven-game winning streak. Iowa now sits at 23-13 overall, 8-4 in the Big Ten heading into Tuesday’s midweek game against Western Illinois.

The Hawkeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an Izaya Fullard RBI single through the left side, but Rutgers answered in a big way.  The Scarlet Knights scored three in the first and chased Iowa starter Ty Langenberg from the game just eight batters into the game.

Rutgers pushed its lead to 5-0 on a Danny DiGeorgio two-run double in the second off redshirt junior Duncan Davitt, they scored one in the third and three more in the fourth (on a two-out rally) to push the lead to 9-3.  Iowa scored single runs in the third and fourth on a Fullard RBI single and a Rutgers balk.

After Rutgers made it 10-4 with one run in the bottom of the eighth, Iowa plated its fourth run in the top of the ninth. Sophomore Michael Seegers doubled and scored on Keaton Anthony’s RBI single to right field.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Graduate transfer Connor Schultz was masterful, scattering two hits over eight shutout innings and the University of Iowa baseball team scored 12 runs on 13 hits in a 12-2 rout of No. 8 Rutgers on Saturday afternoon at Bainton Field.

The victory is the Hawkeyes’ seventh straight and secures the road series win.  It is Iowa’s first series win over a top 10 ranked team since 2018 (No. 7 Michigan) and the first road series win over a ranked foe since 2019 (No. 19 Oklahoma State).

“This shows who we are,” said Schultz. “Today and yesterday, this is the team we are. Going out today and showing it against a team like this is huge.  It shows people how good we are.”

Iowa moves to 8-3 in the Big Ten and 23-12 overall.
