Iowa linebacker coach Seth Wallace building depth this spring

Sports

April 19th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa linebacker coach Seth Wallace has used spring drills to build depth. The starting trio of Jack Campbell, Jestin Jacobs and Seth Benson have combined to appear in 86 games and Wallace says additional practice reps were not needed.

Wallace says it was more important to get experience from the players behind the three starters.

Wallace says it is crucial to get the backups as much experience as possible.

The Hawkeyes close spring drills with an open practice on Saturday.

Drake Relays set for a return to normal

Sports

April 19th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

For the first time in three years the Drake Relays will feature a normal format. Two years ago the event was cancelled in the early days of the pandemic and last year’s running featured an altered schedule and numerous limitations.

That’s Relays director Blake Boldon. Last year protocols forced meet officials to separate the high school, college and professional meets. There were also limitations on attendance.

Boldon says they have learned over the last couple of year’s how important the meet is to the state.

Boldon says he is thrilled to return to being concerned out about the weather.

The first event in Drake Stadium is a week from Wednesday with the first of two days of the decathlon and heptathlon.

Ankeny QB JJ Kohl commits to Iowa State

Sports

April 19th, 2022 by admin

Ankeny quarterback JJ Kohl announced on Monday that he will attend Iowa State. Kohl is a 6-6, 227 pound four-star recruit that is regarded as one of the top in-state players for the 2023 class.

Kohl led Ankeny to a state title game appearance in his first season with the Hawks. He said his goal is to win that title in his final season in 2022.

Kohl chose Iowa State over Penn State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and a number of other programs. Kohl said he wanted to make sure he found the right spot and he feels like Iowa State is just that.

JJ’s dad Jamie Kohl was a kicker for the Cyclones in the mid-90’s.

Tyrese Hunter enters the transfer portal

Sports

April 18th, 2022 by admin

Iowa State starting point guard Tyrese Hunter has entered the transfer portal. The 6 footer from Wisconsin averaged 11 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 2.0 steals in a standout freshman season for the Cyclones.

Hunter was a key cog in the Cyclones big turnaround season that ended with a trip to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Hunter originally committed to Iowa State under Steve Prohm and reaffirmed his commitment after the hire of TJ Otzelberger.

Hunter was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year following his breakout season. Putting his name in the portal doesn’t totally remove the possibility of coming back to Iowa State but likely signals a change after rumors had swirled the past couple of weeks.

Hawkeyes sweep Gophers for 2nd Straight Year

Sports

April 18th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa – An eight-run seventh inning sent the University of Iowa baseball team to a 9-3 victory and series sweep of Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.  It is the Hawkeyes’ second straight sweep of the Gophers.

“Getting a sweep is big, especially at home,” said redshirt sophomore Will Mulflur. “It is good momentum for everyone on the team, especially going into a tough one on the road next week. We have to take care business during the midweek, too, against Bradley.

“It was a good confidence booster with everybody. The pitchers coming out and throwing strikes, always giving us a chance, the offense coming through. It felt like we were able to be who we are this weekend and it worked out.”

The win is Iowa’s 20th of the season, moving the team’s record to 20-12 overall and 6-3 in Big Ten play.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes will host Bradley on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. (CT) at Duane Banks Field.
