Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:40 a.m. CST

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Kim Reynolds plans to sign education funding bills sent to her last week by lawmakers providing a 2 percent increase in state per-pupil funding for the budget year beginning in July. Reynolds has scheduled a bill signing event for this (Tuesday) morning at the Iowa Capitol. The measures would boost per-pupil support from the state general fund to nearly $3.3 billion. Democrats had proposed an amendment that would have provided 3 percent but Republicans holding a majority of votes rejected it.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats hoping to unseat President Donald Trump in 2020 are courting the party’s famous freshmen. It’s an unprecedented pursuit of congressional newcomers that started even before they flipped the House to Democratic control in November. The new lawmakers with the fullest dance cards are New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and those from early voting states such as New Hampshire, South Carolina and Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Kim Reynolds says she has decided not to appeal an Iowa judge’s ruling last month that struck down Iowa’s “fetal heartbeat” abortion law, which would have been the most restrictive anti-abortion law in the nation. Reynolds says it was “an extremely difficult decision” but is the right one for the state and for those who oppose abortion.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A special election to fill an Iowa Senate seat vacated last week when Sen. Jeff Danielson resigned will be held next month. Gov. Kim Reynolds on Monday issued a proclamation that sets the special election for March 19 for the eastern Iowa district which covers Cedar Falls, Hudson and parts of Waterloo in Black Hawk County.

Atlantic Rallies Late, But Falls to Denison in OT

February 19th, 2019 by Jim Field

Denison-Schleswig was able to hit enough free throws in overtime to hold off Atlantic 70-65 in a Class 3-A boys district semi-final at Glenwood Monday night.

Logan Reilly and Chase Mullenix scored all the first quarter points for the Trojans as the two teams were even at 15-all after one.  The second quarter was different, as the Monarchs opened on a 13-0 run to open up a 28-15 lead that looked insurmountable.  Denison still led by 13 heading into the fourth quarter, 46-33, as each team was plagued by turnovers and sloppy play in the third.

The fourth quarter was different.  Atlantic began with a 20-7 run to tie the game at 53-all.  And they battled to send the game into overtime at 63-63.  Skyler Handlos nailed three three-pointers in the fourth quarter and Mullenix had 12 of his team-high 26 points in the late rally.

The overtime period saw Atlantic make only one field goal…the only one by either team, as Denison made seven of 12 free throw attempts for all of their overtime points.

Six-foot-eight junior Goannar Biliew was a tough match-up for the Trojans.  Biliew finished with a game-high 32 points, including ten of 12 from the line, and Charlie Wiebers had 11 points.  The Monarchs improve to 17-4 and advance to the district final.

Atlantic got 16 points from Logan Reilly before he fouled out with 4:49 left in the fourth quarter, and Skyler Handlos scored 11.  The Trojans finish their first season under coach Jeff Ebling with a mark of 9-12.

runaway win over Colo-Nesco in the Girls Class 1A Region 7 Final on Monday night. The Cougars opened the game with a 16-0 run and led 21-5 by the end of the first quarter. The Cougars pushed that lead to 39-15 by the end of the first half.

The second half was a little shaky from time to time but CAM still held a more than comfortable lead the rest of the way. The lead got above the 35 point mark late in the third quarter and the rest of the game melted away in a hurry.

The Cougars hit 10 threes on the night in a great all around performance. Paige McAfee dropped in 5 threes and finished with 21 points, Madison Gettler dropped in 13 on the night. The Cougars advance to the Girls State Basketball Tournament for the first time since 1997 and just the second time as CAM school district. The Cougars improved to 21-2 on the season.

Colo-Nesco was led by 13 points form junior Rylee Purvis. The Royals end their season with a record of 19-4.

The Class 1A State pairings were released late Monday night and the Cougars drew the 6th seed and will face 3rd seeded Montezuma at 6:45pm on Wednesday the 27th. We’ll have coverage starting at 5:45pm that evening.
