No. 16 Iowa women beat No. 10 Iowa State 70-57

Sports

December 8th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Round one of the Cy-Hawk Series goes to Iowa. The 16th ranked Hawkeye women exploded in the third quarter by outscoring 10th ranked Iowa State 27-8 in a 70-57 win. The Hawkeyes shot a scorching 61 percent in the second half, including seven of 10 from three point range.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. It was a marquee win for the Hawkeyes, who improve to 7-3.

Caitlin Clark led Iowa with 19 points and added 8 rebounds and eight assists.

Iowa State led 28-23 at halftime before things unraveled in the third quarter.

That’s ISU coach Bill Fennelly. The Cyclones shot a chilly 36 percent as they fall to 6-2.

No. 20 Iowa State visits Iowa tonight (Thursday night)

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger says the 20th ranked Cyclones will be tested on Thursday night in the 76th meeting against Iowa. ISU is 7-1 and has limited opponents to 37 percent shooting and just 26 percent from three point range. He says a key against the Hawkeyes is limiting fast break opportunities.

It is Iowa State’s first road game of the season and Otzelberger says mental toughness is a must.

Otzelberger says ball pressure in the half court is a key against the Hawkeyes.

Defense travels and the Cyclones won eight games away from Hilton Coliseum last season.

Senior forward Jaz Kunc says the Cyclones are ready for their first road test.

Kunc says they are preparing for a hostile environment.

Kunc says the Cyclones need to play well on defense.

The Hawkeyes need an identity. They looked small, soft and struggled from the perimeter in a Tuesday night loss to 15th ranked Duke. That combination won’t work against a Cyclone team that is built on defense and toughness. Iowa State won last year’s game 73-53 in Ames but the Hawkeyes lead the all-time series 47-28.

Rush makes it official with Iowa

Atlantic senior Ava Rush made it official on Wednesday by signing her school agreement with the University of Iowa to continue her track and field and academic career. Rush signed with her parents and coaches in attendance at Atlantic High School.  She said it’s a dream come true to join the Hawkeyes and she talked about some of the hard work it took to get her to this point.

Rush had a 9th place finish at the Class 3A state cross country meet this season, and has been strong on the cross country course and on the track. She competed in four events at the state track and field meet in 2021 and competed in four events this past season in 2022. This past season she qualified in the 1500M, 4x800M Relay, 4x400M Relay, and Distance Medley. The 4x400M Relay team grabbed a fourth place medal and will be back to fight for a strong placing again this year. Rush hopes they can accomplish some big things in her final high school season.

Ava has been involved in a large number of activities through her high school career and she feels those experiences have helped her elevate her track career.

Rush will be involved in middle distance and relay events at Iowa and she said she’s willing to help the team wherever the coaching staff feels is her best fit.

LAS VEGAS — University of Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell was awarded the 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy. The presentation was made during the 64th National Football Foundation Annual Award Dinner, presented by Las Vegas, at the Bellagio Resort and Casino.

The Campbell Trophy is the premier scholar-athlete award that annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. As the 33rd recipient, Campbell will receive a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship.

“This is a very deserving honor for Jack,” said Moon Family head coach Kirk Ferentz. “Jack is the ultimate teammate and a highly respected leader in our program. His athletic and academic success is the direct result of his strong work ethic. Jack is an outstanding representative of our football program, the University of Iowa, his family, and the Cedar Falls community.”

Campbell, a native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, was earlier named the Nagurski-Wooden Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Butkus-Fitzgerald Big Ten Linebacker of the Year. He is one of five finalists for the Butkus Award, which is awarded to the best linebacker in the nation. He was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik and Rotary Lombardi awards.

Campbell (6-foot-5, 246-pounds) has led Iowa’s defense all season. He has totaled 118 tackles, which are second in the Big Ten and tied for 13th nationally. He also recorded two interceptions, one recovered fumble and one forced fumble, along with 3.5 tackles for loss. He has 295 career tackles to rank 19th in program history.

Campbell, who will earn his degree in December, carries a 3.49 grade point average with a major in enterprise leadership and a minor in sport and recreation management. He earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition in 2021, has earned Dean’s List honors three semesters and is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He has been a member of Iowa’s Player Leadership Council for three years.

Iowa (7-5, 5-4) will face Kentucky in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 31 in Nashville (11 a.m. CT, ESPN). The Hawkeyes earned their 20th bowl invite over the past 24 seasons under Ferentz.

Katie Dinnebier dished out four assists in the first quarter on her way to a game-high six assists. Four Bulldogs netted double-digit points led by Megan Meyer’s 16. UNI rally falls short against Toledo

Sports

December 7th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

UNI fell behind by 12 in the opening half and lost at home to Toledo 83-75. Bowen Born scored 27 points as the Panthers drop to 3-5 on the season.

Toledo shot better than 51 percent for the game and Born says the panthers gave up too many easy baskets in the first half.
