Iowa State set to add Tre King to the rotation

Sports

December 14th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

When Iowa State returns to action on Sunday against Western Michigan the Cyclones will gain the services of senior forward Tre King. The native of Lexington, Kentucky transferred from Georgetown to Iowa State last fall without playing a game for the Hoyas. He began his college career at Eastern Kentucky.

That’s coach T.J. Otzelberger. King becomes eligible at the end of the first semester and will get plying time against Western Michigan.

Iowa State is 8-2.

Too many miscues cost Atlantic boys against Kuemper Catholic

Sports

December 13th, 2022 by admin

The Atlantic boys basketball team suffered through some mental lapses, turnovers, and missed close-range shots in a 77-62 loss to Kuemper Catholic on Tuesday night. The Trojans held tight early with the game tied at 16 at the end of the first, but Kuemper built a 34-23 lead by half. The Knights seem to answer any Atlantic charge the rest of the way.

The Trojans struggled taking good care of the ball at times and head coach Derek Hall said their statisticians recorded 25 turnovers and that made the difference.

Jayden Proehl led the Trojans with 17 points and Colton Rasmussen added 15. Atlantic drops to 1-4 on the season and will travel to Lewis Central on Friday, a game we’ll have on KJAN.

Kuemper Catholic was led by 18 points from Dawson Gifford and the Knights improved to 4-1. They will face Kingsley-Pierson in their next game on Friday.

Atlantic girls finish strong in win over Kuemper Catholic

Sports

December 13th, 2022 by admin

Aubrey Guyer banked in a three at the end of the third quarter and that helped spark the Atlantic girls basketball team to a strong finish and 49-42 win over Kuemper Catholic on Tuesday night.

The Trojans led by as many as 8 in the second quarter but that lead dwindled away with the Knights getting their first lead of the game at 32-31 late in the third quarter. Atlantic used a 7-0 run early in the fourth to get the separation they needed for the win. Atlantic head coach Dan Vargason was proud of the way the team finished.

Jada Jensen led Atlantic with 18 points and Coach Vargason said her aggressiveness was a big difference in the game.

Atlantic has put together a 4-game win streak and improved to 5-2 on the season. Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Lewis Central on Friday. We’ll have that game on KJAN.

Campbell and Merriweather named Sporting News All-America

Sports

December 13th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell has been named first-team All-America by Sporting News, while senior defensive back Kaevon Merriweather was named to the second-team.

Campbell is the 29th Hawkeye to earn consensus All-America status, while two of those players (OL Calvin Jones and LB Larry Station) earned the distinction in two separate seasons. Iowa football has had a consensus All-American in four straight seasons for the first time in program history.

Campbell has previously been named a first-team All-America selection by Walter Camp, FWAA and The Associated Press. The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) teams will be announced Wednesday.

Along with the consensus All-America status, Campbell earned individual honors with two national awards last week. On Tuesday, Campbell was presented the William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation before being presented the Butkus Award as the top linebacker in the nation on Thursday.

Campbell was previously named the Nagurski-Wooden Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Butkus-Fitzgerald Big Ten Linebacker of the Year and he earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second consecutive season. He was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik and Rotary Lombardi awards.

Campbell (6-foot-5, 246-pounds) has led Iowa’s defense all season. He has totaled 118 tackles, which are second in the Big Ten and tied for 13th nationally. The Cedar Falls, Iowa, native also recorded two interceptions, one recovered fumble and one forced fumble, along with 3.5 tackles for loss. He has 295 career tackles to rank 19th in program history.

Iowa has had a consensus first-team All-America selection each of the last four years (K Keith Duncan, 2019; DL Daviyon Nixon, 2020; OL Tyler Linderbaum, 2021), along with two selections (LB Josey Jewell, DB Joshua Jackson) in 2017.

Meriweather earned second-team All-America honors after starting every game and ranking second on the team with three interceptions. The Michigan native has 47 tackles and scored a defensive touchdown with a fumble return in Iowa’s win at Rutgers. He was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his play against the Scarlet Knights.

Merriweather was named second-team All-America by The Associated Press on Monday. He also earned honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition and is a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year.

Iowa (7-5, 5-4) will face Kentucky in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 31 in Nashville (11 a.m. CT, ESPN). The Hawkeyes earned their 20th bowl invite over the past 24 seasons under Moon Family head football coach Kirk Ferentz.
