Sheriff’s officials in Pottawattamie County say one person died and two others were injured during a collision Thursday afternoon. Deputies were dispatched at around 3:52-p.m. to Old Lincoln Highway near Prairie Lane, for a two vehicle accident with injuries. The first deputy to arrive on the scene advised dispatch both drivers were pinned in their vehicles. Crescent Fire and Rescue were able to extricate the drivers from their vehicles

A preliminary investigation indicated 30-year old Bubby Kobes, from Missouri Valley, was driving a 2018 Chevy Impala northbound on Old Lincoln Highway. 53-year old Thomas Madsen, from Missouri Valley, was driving a 2005 Ford F-250 southbound on Old Lincoln Highway. Their vehicles collided as they were negotiating a curve near Prairie Lane.  Madsen was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Medical personnel declared Kobes to be deceased at the scene. A passenger in his vehicle, 36-year old Jason Doiel, of Modale, suffered minor injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled a three-day waiting period for women seeking an abortion is unconstitutional. The waiting period was part of a state law passed LAST YEAR that bans abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy. The 20-week-ban part of the law took effect in May of 2017. Republican lawmakers argued requiring a women to wait three days after her initial appointment for an abortion gave her time to consider all options and medical risks. This ruling overturning the three-day waiting period aligns with the court’s 2015 decision on so-called “telemedicine” abortion. Three years ago, the Iowa Supreme Court overturned Iowa Board of Medicine regulations that required a doctor to conduct a physical exam before a medication-induced abortion.

The state law passed THIS YEAR that bans nearly all abortions was put on hold until all court challenges are completed. Abortion opponents are hoping President Trump will appoint a justice to the *U.S.* Supreme Court who will side with the four conservatives already there and overturn Roe v Wade. That’s the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court opinion that legalized abortion in the country.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A jailed former Iowa youth basketball coach is charged in a new federal indictment with enticing several minors to produce sexually explicit images and videos. A superseding indictment returned Wednesday against former Iowa Barnstormers coach Greg Stephen adds five counts of sexual exploitation of minors and one count of possessing child pornography. The indictment alleges that photos and videos of five minors were found on a hard drive that investigators seized during a search of Stephen’s Monticello home.

It alleges Stephen persuaded the minors to masturbate for the purpose of making images of them between 2010 and 2013. It’s unclear whether the alleged victims were Stephen’s players. Stephen has been jailed since he was arrested in March, when investigators alleged he secretly recorded adolescent players disrobing in hotel bathrooms. The new indictment retains the original charge against Stephen, knowingly transporting child pornography.

Even though some lakes and rivers are unsafe due to flooding, Iowa’s waterways will be swarming with boats this weekend as there’s a very hot forecast and the 4th of July holiday is just ahead. Susan Stocker, the boating law administrator with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says the agency is launching its annual Operation Dry Water campaign today (Friday). Stocker says, “It is a heightened awareness to make sure that people understand that using alcohol, drinking alcohol and operating a boat is very dangerous and very hazardous.”

Last summer, 38 people were arrested in Iowa on a charge of Boating While Intoxicated.  “The blood-alcohol content for operating a motor boat is the same, .08, as it is for driving a car,” Stocker says. “When people are out operating their boat, they’re out on the water having a good time, but as soon as they’re done, then they have to get in their vehicle and take their boat home.”  She says a boat operator is just as potentially deadly on the water as they would be on land.  “Being out on the water, even if you are not impaired, the wind, the waves and the sun have an effect on your reaction time,” Stocker says, “so when you add alcohol, then it becomes much more dangerous.”

She reminds boaters to always wear your life jacket, as 85-percent of drowning victims weren’t wearing one. Stocker also touts taking a boating safety education course. She notes 71-percent of deaths occurred on boats where the operator didn’t receive boating safety instruction.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — The attorney for an Iowa man accused of stealing trade secrets says his client will plead guilty next week. U.S. District Court records say 55-year-old Josh Isler has been indicted on charges of theft of trade secrets and making false statements to the FBI. Attorney Alfred Willett said Friday his client will enter the pleas Thursday in a Cedar Rapids courtroom.

Court documents say that while Isler was working as a technical service account manager for DuPont’s ethanol fuel enzyme division in August 2013, he downloaded hundreds of electronic DuPont files after accepting a job with an unnamed DuPont competitor. The documents say he transferred some of the DuPont information to his new employer.

The documents also say he lied to FBI agents when he told them he had not downloaded the files.

The Fourth of July is a day of celebration in the United States.  Families get together for picnics and fireworks which usually requires traveling either long or short distances.  With increased road use and the possibility of increased alcohol consumption, the risk of traffic crashes rise.  An analysis by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showed that on average, more people die in motor vehicle crashes on July Fourth than any other day of the year.  The study found that motorcycles and alcohol were both big contributors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2016 (the latest year in which data is available) 188 people were killed in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher.  This is a 28 percent increase from 2015 when there were 146 fatalities.  Nearly half of those who died were in a vehicle crash involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a BAC of .15 or higher – almost twice the legal limit.  In Iowa there were five fatalities in 2016 of which four were alcohol related.  There were four fatalities in 2017 and one was alcohol related.

To combat the impaired driving problem over the Fourth of July holiday there will be an increased presence of law enforcement officers on all of Iowa’s roadways July 1st through the 4th, to spread the message that drunk driving will not be tolerated.  It is NEVER okay to drive after drinking.  Have a plan to get home safely if you will be drinking.  The Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau want to remind you that the best way to protect yourself in any crash is to be wearing your seat belt:  BUCKLE UP EVERY TRIP – EVERY TIME!

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa trooper who has been on paid leave for 10 months has been linked to a gunshot that occurred inside a state office building. Iowa State Patrol spokesman Nathan Ludwig says the incident involving trooper Wade Karp occurred in December 2016. He says a service weapon was discharged at the patrol’s Post 16 inside the Lucas State Office Building in Des Moines, where Karp was assigned. Ludwig says no one was injured, and that reports detailing the incident are confidential personnel records.

It wasn’t clear whether the discharge was accidental or if it’s part of the internal investigation facing Karp. The Associated Press reported Monday that Karp has been on leave since Sept. 5 and has earned nearly $50,000 since then. The patrol has refused to explain the reason. Karp says he hasn’t committed misconduct, and didn’t respond to inquiries about the discharge.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports a rollover accident late Thursday night in rural Council Bluffs, resulted in a man being arrested for OWI/1st offense and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. Authorities say 24-year old Christopher Charles Shook, of Council Bluffs, was driving a 2017 Chevy pickup, when he lost control of the vehicle at around 11:15-p.m. near  Wabash Avenue and Overland Trail. The pickup rolled several times into the west ditch. When a Deputy made contact with Shook, the man initially refused rescue. The Deputy called for rescue due to Shook having showed signs of being injured, and impaired.

Shook admitted drinking at the College World Series. He was transported to Jenny Edmundson Hospital, where it was discovered he had serious injury to his neck. Implied consent was invoked at the hospital where Shook refused to provide a urine sample for chemical testing. A loaded Glock .43 handgun was discovered in Shooks truck at the time it was impounded.

A traffic stop at around 2-a.m. today (Friday), in Pott. County, resulted in the arrest of 38-year old Pauleen Ann Dofner, from Council Bluffs. She was pulled over for failure to dim her headlights, and after displaying clues of impairment, was arrested for OWI/1st offense.

And, a rolling disturbance on Interstate 80 westbound near Council Bluffs today (Friday), at around 5:10-a.m., resulted in the arrest of Kyle Cole, for Domestic Assault with injury, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. No other details were made available.

Creston Police report a traffic stop Thursday afternoon at Walnut and Irving Streets, in Creston, resulted in an arrest. 48-year old Randy Eugene Overholzter, of Creston, was taken into custody for Driving While Revoked. His bond was set at $1,000.
