Big Mac returns to SoCal as Dodgers hitting coach

Sports

November 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mark McGwire was hired Wednesday as hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he’ll work with All-Star sluggers Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier. McGwire spent the past three seasons in the same job with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he starred during parts of his 16-year major league career. During McGwire’s tenure, the Cardinals led the National League in batting average (.269) and on-base percentage (.337), ranked second in runs (2,263) and fourth in slugging percentage (.416). He worked with All-Star sluggers Carlos Beltran, Lance Berkman, Matt Holliday and Albert Pujols, while helping develop 2011World Series MVP David Freese.

The job is a homecoming for McGwire, who is from the Los Angeles suburb of Pomona and currently lives in Orange County. He played college baseball at Southern California and was a member of Oakland’s 1989 World Series champion team. McGwire replaces Dave Hansen, who was let go last month and hired by the Seattle Mariners for the same job.

Sports

November 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn has not been cleared for contact following his concussion and will miss his second straight start Monday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Matt Cassel will start in Quinn’s place. Cassel was the starter the first five games of the season before sustaining a concussion and then losing the job during the bye week.

Quinn was hurt early in the Chiefs’ loss to Oakland on Oct. 28. He missed Thursday night’s game at San Diego, when Kansas City dropped to 1-7 with its fifth straight loss.  The former first-round draft pick returned to Kansas City late Tuesday after being advised by neurologists that he should avoid contact. Quinn has been cleared to take part in light workouts during the individual portion of practices.

Cyclones Overwhelm Lady Statesmen in Exhibition

Sports

November 7th, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s basketball team defeated the William Penn Lady Statesmen, 98-55 in the Cyclones’ second exhibition game of the season on Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones were lead offensively by sophomore Fallon Ellis who came off the bench to post a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double on a perfect 7-7 shooting night.

The Cyclones looked sharp early, getting off to a fast start and led 16-4 less than five minutes into the game. Senior Chelsea Poppens fueled the Cyclones early, hitting her first three shots from the field. The forward ended the night with 12 points and eight boards in just 14 minutes of work.

The Lady Statesmen fought their way back into the game later in the first half, narrowing the Iowa State lead to one point at 33-32 with 4:16 to play in the half. A late surge by the Cyclones, capped by a Brynn Williamson trey with 10 seconds left in the half, gave Iowa State a 42-34 cushion heading into the locker room.

After the intermission, the Cyclones picked up right where they left off, shooting 70.8 percent from the field and 8-13 from the three-point line in the second half. Iowa State was able to pull away from William Penn as senior post player Anna Prins scored 13 of her 15 points after the break. Ellis also had 13 of her 20 points in the second half.

Junior forward Hallie Christofferson also chipped in 17 points on the night, while freshman guard Kidd Blaskowsky had 14 points on 5-6 shooting from the field, while adding four assists and four steals. In all, 10 Cyclones saw double-digit minutes on the floor.

The Cyclones will open regular season play Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT in Hilton Coliseum to take on Western Illinois.

Steelers WR Brown likely out against Chiefs

Sports

November 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers will likely be without leading receiver Antonio Brown next Monday night when they host the Kansas City Chiefs. Brown sprained his right ankle in last Sunday’s 24-20 victory over the New York Giants. Coach Mike Tomlin called Brown’s status “very much in doubt.” Brown leads the Steelers with 42 receptions and is second on the team with 499 receiving yards. If Brown sits, it’s likely Emmanuel Sanders will take Brown’s spot in the starting lineup, with veteran Jerricho Cotchery moving up to starting slot receiver.

The Steelers will also be without safety Troy Polamalu, who will miss his fifth straight game and seventh overall with a right calf injury. Running back Jonathan Dwyer, who sat out last week with a right quad injury, is expected to play.

Green Valley State Park to Close during Special Deer Hunt

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

November 6th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say Green Valley State Park near Creston, will be closed to the general public Nov. 17-18, for the ninth annual special park deer hunt. The hunt will allow 25 hunters to harvest up to 50 antlerless deer using only muzzleloaders. Hunters have already registered and will receive two antlerless tags each redeemable only during the special hunt at the designated areas and specified dates. Additional DNR staff will be on hand to patrol the park boundaries. Green Valley will re-open to the public on Nov. 19.

Alan Carr, park ranger for Green Valley State Park says “The hunt helps keep the deer population in the park under control. Hunters must attend a special safety meeting before the hunt where we explain the reason for the hunt, discuss the rules and show them the park boundaries.  We hope to harvest as close to 50 female deer as we can and do it in a safe and efficient manner.”  Carr said the hunt has been a great deer management tool for state parks.

“People want to see deer when they come to park, but we need to maintain a balance in the deer herd,” Carr said.  “Research shows that if you stop these hunts completely, the deer population tends to go back up rather quickly so the hunt will probably remain an annual event. The depredation biologist sets number of deer targeted for removal each year that is based on the population survey.”

The average harvest for the two day hunt has been just over 40 deer each year.

Cardinals promote Mabry to replace McGwire

Sports

November 6th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cardinals have promoted John Mabry to hitting coach as the replacement for Mark McGwire, who told St. Louis he won’t return after three seasons and appears headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 42-year-old Mabry, whose 14 major league seasons included three stints with St. Louis, and was assistant hitting coach last season.

St. Louis also promoted Blaise Ilsley to bullpen coach on Monday as the replacement for Dyar Miller, who was not retained after one season under new manager Mike Matheny. The 48-year-old Ilsley was pitching coach for the Cardinals’ Triple-A Memphis affiliate the past five seasons.

The team extended offers to pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, bench coach Mike Aldrete, third base coach Jose Oquendo and first base coach Chris Maloney to return in their current positions. They have not identified a successor to Mabry as assistant hitting coach.
