AMES, Iowa (AP) – Percy Gibson led three Iowa State players with double-doubles by scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as Iowa State beat Southern 82-59 on Friday night in both teams’ season opener.

Senior transfer Will Clyburn had 16 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Georges Niang had 15 and 12 for the Cyclones, who shook off a rough start to win their 15th straight opener.

Southern led by as many as 11 points midway through the first half. But Iowa State pulled ahead 41-39 at halftime and opened the second half on a 25-11 run.

Derick Beltran had a game-high 26 points for Southern.

Korie Lucious, a transfer from Michigan State, shot just 1 of 12 from the field with seven turnovers in his Iowa State debut. But a strong second half carried the Cyclones to a convincing victory.

Texas to pay Royal tribute against Iowa State

Sports

November 9th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – When No. 19 Texas takes the field on Saturday against Iowa State, the Longhorns will be paying tribute to former coach Darrell Royal with helmet stickers bearing his “DKR” initials and the first play on offense, which will be run from the wishbone formation Royal introduced to major college football in 1968.  Royal died this week at age 88, and the school will honor the coach who won two national championships, a share of a third and 11 Southwest Conference titles from 1957 to 1976.

It will be an emotional day for Texas coach Mack Brown, who was very close to Royal and often talked about their friendship and the mentor’s role Royal had in his life.

Struggling Purdue, Iowa Hook Up in Iowa City

Sports

November 9th, 2012 by Jim Field

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Purdue is trying to win for its embattled coach.

Iowa is vying to curb a tailspin that’s threatening to keep it out of a bowl game.

Neither the Boilermakers nor the Hawkeyes figured there would be so much at stake for a game that means so little in the Big Ten standings.

Purdue (3-6, 0-5) and Iowa (4-5, 2-3) have combined to lose eight straight league games heading into Saturday’s showdown in Iowa City. The Boilers have fallen apart after a 3-1 start that included a narrow loss at national title contender Notre Dame.

The Hawkeyes have dropped their last three games, including a 24-21 defeat at Indiana that gave the Hoosiers their first back-to-back league victories in five years.
