NASCAR race postponed until Sunday in IA

Sports

June 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — The NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway has been postponed until 10 a.m. CDT Sunday because of rain. The race was set to begin at 7 p.m. Saturday night, but rain began falling about 40 minutes before the scheduled start. Workers were nearly finished drying the track before it started to rain again, forcing officials to push the race back a day. Austin Dillon will start first after winning the pole for the third week in a row, followed by Sam Hornish Junior, Brian Scott and Brian Vickers.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Two Iowa baseball players and an incoming Hawkeyes freshman have been selected in the Major League Baseball draft. Senior pitchers Andrew Hanse and Matt Dermody and freshman outfielder Kendall Coleman were all taken by major league clubs on Saturday.

Coleman, a Texas native set to join Iowa in the fall, was taken by the New York Yankees in the 11th round. Hanse, who grew up in Marion, was selected by Tampa Bay in the 22nd round. Dermody, a Norwalk native, was taken for the fourth time in his career when Toronto picked him in the 29th round.

Nationwide regulars looking forward to Iowa

Sports

June 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — This weekend’s NASCAR Nationwide race in Iowa promises to be a rare treat for series regulars. The 0.875-mile oval has always been a favorite among the drivers and today’s (Saturday’s) race is as good a chance as any for a series regular to score a victory.

Joey Logano is the lone Sprint Cup driver scheduled to race at Iowa. Though Logano is coming off a win at Dover last weekend, it appears likely that a Nationwide driver could win for just the third time in 12 starts this season.

CINCINNATI (AP) – Adam Wainwright pitched seven innings for his ninth win, and every Cardinals starter had a hit in a 9-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night that gave St. Louis a four-game lead in the NL Central, its biggest of the season.

Wainwright (9-3) gave up two runs and seven hits as the Cardinals improved the major leagues’ best record to 40-21.

Slumping Pete Kozma drove in three runs, David Freese and Jon Jay knocked in two apiece, and four Cardinals extended long hitting streaks against a pitching staff in a downturn. Mike Leake (5-3) lasted only five innings for the Reds, who have given up 26 runs while losing their last three games.

St. Louis has won the last four series between the teams.
