Cochran wins Champions Tour event in Iowa

Sports

June 2nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Russ Cochran won the Principal Charity Classic on Sunday for his fourth career Champions Tour title, closing with a 5-under 67 for a one-stroke victory over Jay Don Blake. Cochran finished at 11-under 205 at Wakonda Club. The left-hander, two strokes behind second-round leader Duffy Waldorf entering the day, broke a winless streak that stretched 35 tournaments.

Blake shot 69. He bogeyed the par-3 17th with his first three-putt of the tournament to fall a stroke behind. He had a chance to force a playoff, but his birdie try on the par-4 18th missed to the right. Waldorf had a 71 to tie for third at 9 under with Mark Calcavecchia and Kirk Triplett. Calcavecchia and Triplett shot 67.

Gaudin gets win in first start in 3 years

Sports

June 2nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Chad Gaudin picked up a win in his first start in over three years and Brandon Belt broke a tie with a two-run pinch-hit double to lead San Francisco to a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, ending the Giants’ seven-game road skid.  Gaudin (1-1) went six innings in his first start since Sept. 28, 2009 as a member of the New York Yankees. He allowed four hits and two runs, both coming on a two-run homer by David Freese in the fourth. Gaudin is temporarily replacing Ryan Vogelsong in the rotation. Vogelsong broke several bones in his right hand May 20.

Belt slammed the first pitch from reliever Randy Choate into the gap in left-center to bring in Brandon Crawford and Gregor Blanco for a 4-2 lead in the seventh inning. Crawford began the rally with a single off St. Louis rookie Tyler Lyons (2-1).

Cubs put reliever Dolis on DL, recall Parker

Sports

June 1st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — The Cubs placed right-handed reliever Rafael Dolis on the disabled list because of a strained right forearm, and brought up right-handed reliever Blake Parker from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday. Dolis pitched five scoreless innings in five relief appearances in three stints with Chicago.

Parker is 0-1 with seven saves and a 2.04 ERA in 16 relief appearances this season with Iowa. He was available for the Cubs’ game Saturday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. To make room for Parker on the 40-man roster, right-handed reliever Alex Burnett was designated for assignment. Burnett, claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, pitched a scoreless inning for the Cubs on Wednesday before being optioned to Iowa on Thursday.
