Iowa Speedway prepares for US Cellular 250 on Aug. 3rd

July 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The NASCAR Nationwide Series makes its second stop at the Iowa Speedway this weekend with Saturday night’s US Cellular 250. Iowa Speedway CEO Doug Fritz says Brad Keselowski will be the first reigning sprint Cup champion to compete at the track. Fritz says Keselowski has been to Newton before, as well as other Nascar stars, but never before in the track’s 8-year history have they had the current Nascar Sprint Cup Series Champion.

Fritz says the drivers in the Nationwide Series enjoy competing against the big names in the Sprint Cup Series. They include Brian Vickers, who recently won the New Hampshire Nascar Sprint Cup Series race, along with Nationwide regulars Trevor Baine, a past Daytona 500 Champ, along with Sam Hornish, Jr., the current Nationwide Series points leader and past champion of the Indy 500.

Fritz says as of Sunday morning, there were still tickets available for Saturday night’s race, but he anticipates a sell out. After that, it’s general admission and standing room only on race day. Tickets for both Friday’s practice sessions and Saturday’s qualifying laps and race can be obtained at www.iowaspeedway.com, or 1-866RUSTY-GO.  He says fans will have an opportunity to meet the drivers this weekend. An autograph session with all the Nationwide drivers takes place from 2:30-until 3:10-p.m., Saturday.  Parking lots open both days at 10-a.m. for tailgating.

ATLANTA (AP) — Jason Heyward homered and drove in two runs to help the Atlanta Braves beat St. Louis 5-2 on Sunday night, capping their first three-game sweep of the Cardinals at home in 10 years. The Braves broke a 2-all tie with two runs in the sixth inning off rookie Shelby Miller and two relievers. Pinch-hitter Joey Terdoslavich drove in Chris Johnson with the go-ahead run. Heyward added another run-scoring single.

Heyward has nine homers this season, including two in the series between NL division leaders. Kris Medlen allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk in six innings to snap his three-game losing streak.

ATLANTA (AP) – Andrelton Simmons hit a two-run double in the eighth inning and the Atlanta Braves, boosted by Julio Teheran’s sharp outing, beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 Saturday in a matchup of NL division leaders.  Teheran allowed two hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking one.  Simmons’ bases-loaded, two-out double came on a 99 mph fastball from Trevor Rosenthal.

Randy Choate (1-1) walked Freddie Freeman to open the eighth. Evan Gattis struck out and Brian McCann singled. Rosenthal relieved and struck out Dan Uggla before walking Chris Johnson to load the bases. Luis Avilan (3-0) pitched a perfect eighth and Craig Kimbrel recorded three outs to earn his 30th save.

Cardinals starter Joe Kelly pitched 6 1-3 scoreless innings.

ATLANTA (AP) — Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and is starting against the Braves on Saturday. Holliday had been out since July 12 with a strained right hamstring. With Holliday’s return, Allen Craig is starting at first base. Craig played left field with Matt Adams at first base during Holliday’s absence. Adams is not starting on Saturday.

The Cardinals optioned outfielder-first baseman Brock Peterson to Triple-A Memphis to clear a roster spot for Holliday. Holliday has a .268 batting average with 13 homers and 47 RBIs. Peterson, who was recalled from Memphis when Holliday was placed on the disabled list, had one hit in seven at-bats.

Braves Top Cardinals Friday

Sports

July 27th, 2013 by admin

ATLANTA (AP) – Mike Minor allowed only one run to give Atlanta’s depleted rotation a lift, Jason Heyward homered, and the Braves beat Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 in a matchup of division leaders on Friday night.

Minor (10-5) gave up four hits with no walks in seven innings. His sharp performance came two days after Tim Hudson was lost for the season with a broken right ankle.

The Atlanta rotation also is without left-hander Paul Maholm, who isn’t on the disabled list but is expected to miss at least one start because of a bruised left wrist.

Wainwright (13-6), the NL leader in wins, took his first loss since a 2-1 decision to Texas on June 23.

ATLANTA (AP) – St. Louis left-hander John Gast is expected to be ready to pitch in eight to 12 months following season-ending surgery on his left shoulder.  Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement on Friday that more will be known about Gast’s recovery period when the team evaluates his rehabilitation in the next few weeks.

Gast was 2-0 with a 5.11 ERA in three starts before he was placed on the disabled list on May 26 with a left shoulder strain. No details of Friday’s surgery were provided by the team.

Chiefs agree to 5-year deal with Fisher

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have signed No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher, ensuring that the big right tackle out of Central Michigan will be in training camp with plenty of time to prepare for the season. The team announced the move Friday without disclosing terms. A person familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity because terms were confidential, told The Associated Press that the contract will be for five years.

The deal is expected to be in the $22 million range, which would put it on par with the two previous No. 1 picks to have been signed since the NFL instituted a new rookie wage scale with the most recent collective-bargaining agreement.

The team has now signed all eight draft selections from the 2013 draft class.

Chiefs agree to 5-year deal with Fisher

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms on a five-year deal with No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher.  The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the signing.

Fisher was expected to report to training camp Friday in St. Joseph, Mo., in time for the first full-squad workout. The right tackle missed three days of practice earlier this week that involved his fellow rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans.

Fisher and fellow offensive tackle Luke Joeckel were considered the top linemen available in the draft. The Chiefs opted to go with Fisher with the first pick, and he will play on the right side opposite veteran left tackle Branden Albert.
