Chiefs let competition shake out at wide receiver

Sports

August 2nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are still on the hunt for wide receivers during training camp. Dwayne Bowe’s job is just about the only one secure after the former Pro Bowler signed a five-year deal to stay with the Chiefs. Otherwise, guys such as former first-round pick Jon Baldwin and free-agent signee Donnie Avery are trying to make an impression.

Baldwin in particular has struggled during the first week of camp, dropping several passes while being defended by air. He dropped another one on Thursday when he was wide open. Chiefs coach Andy Reid says he’s trying to find out what guys can do best before establishing roles for them, and Bowe promised the corps would be “110 percent” ready to go.

Cardinals avert 5-game sweep, trounce Pirates 13-0

August 2nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Joe Kelly and the St. Louis Cardinals averted a five-game sweep at Pittsburgh, ending a season-worst seven-game losing streak by routing the Pirates 13-0 Thursday night in a matchup between the NL’s top two teams. St. Louis began the series with a 2½-game lead in the NL Central but left with the Pirates ahead by 1½ games. The Cardinals avoided their first sweep in a set of at least five games since 1916, when the New York Giants took all six games.

Kelly pitched six scoreless innings and had two hits. Tony Cruz added three hits, including a two-run double during an eight-run seventh inning.

Gifford ready for long-awaited Nationwide debut

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ryan Gifford has waited for a seat in a top-tier NASCAR race for what seems like forever. Gifford will finally get his shot Saturday night at the Iowa Speedway. The 24-year-old Gifford will make his Nationwide series debut in the No. 33 car for Richard Childress Racing. Gifford, a Drive for Diversity member and the oldest driver in this year’s NASCAR Next program, will be the eighth different driver to run the No. 33 this season.

Gifford says he’s waited his whole life for this opportunity, adding that he’s hoping to simply run a smart race. Gifford will also run Friday night in the K&N Pro Series East series race, where he’s fourth in the standings.

Chiefs sign CB McIlwain, OT Tepper for camp

Sports

August 1st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have signed cornerback Kamaal McIlwain and offensive tackle Mike Tepper to provide some depth during training camp. McIlwain entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Falcons in 2011. He spent his rookie year on the Saints’ practice squad before being released last year, and then signed with the Panthers, where he spent time on their practice squad.

The Chiefs are mostly set in the defensive backfield, though they did lose rookie safety Sanders Commings to a broken collarbone on the first day of camp. The 6-foot-6, 354-pound Tepper has bounced through Dallas and Indianapolis, where he played in six games and made four starts last season.

Cardinals place C Molina, OF Robinson on 15-day DL

Sports

August 1st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have placed catcher Yadier Molina and outfielder Shane Robinson on the 15-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Adron Chambers and utility player Brock Peterson from Triple-A Memphis.

Molina has been dealing with a right knee sprain for more than a month. He left a 6-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night after the third inning and flew to St. Louis on Wednesday for further examination. Molina is third in the National League with a .330 batting average. The All-Star said late Tuesday he tried to play through the pain but believes rest is a better option.

The injury comes at a difficult time for the Cardinals, who have lost a season-high six straight to fall 1½ games behind Pittsburgh in the NL Central.
