Mesoraco hits pair of HRs, Reds beat Cardinals 8-3

Sports

August 4th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CINCINNATI (AP) — Devin Mesoraco drove in three runs with a pair of homers, and the Cincinnati Reds finally broke out against a St. Louis team that has held them down all season, beating the Cardinals 8-3 on Saturday night. The Reds won for only the fourth time in 11 games between the NL Central rivals. Cincinnati had scored fewer than four runs in each of their last nine games head-to-head.

Left-handed Tony Cingrani (5-1) and four relievers contained an offense that had scored 26 runs in the last two games, allowing four hits. Jake Westbrook (7-6) gave up five runs — all with two outs — in five innings. Jack Hannahan singled with the bases loaded in the first inning. Mesoraco’s homer in the fourth made it 4-1.

Keselowski wins Nationwide race in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Brad Keselowski took control with 35 laps left to win the NASCAR Nationwide race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday night. The Sprint Cup driver has won in his last three Nationwide starts, also topping the field at Richmond in April and Kentucky in June.

Points leader Austin Dillon led a race-high 116 laps, but gave up a huge lead following a late caution. Keselowski, the only Sprint Cup driver in the field, took control a few laps later for his second Nationwide win at Iowa.

Sam Hornish Junior was second, followed by Brian Vickers, Dillon and Kyle Larson.

Chiefs Make More Lineman Moves

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have signed offensive guard Rokevious Watkins and released offensive lineman Mike Tepper in their continued search for help along the interior of their line.

Watkins was scheduled to work out with the Chiefs for the first time Saturday.

The 6-foot-4, 338-pound Watkins was drafted in the fifth round by the St. Louis Rams last year. He appeared in one game before an ankle injury cut short his rookie season.

He was recently waived after reportedly arriving at Rams camp overweight and out of shape, and will miss the first game of this season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Tepper, who hadn’t appeared in an NFL game in two years, joined the Chiefs earlier this week.

Dillon seeks 1st win of the season at Iowa

Sports

August 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Austin Dillon knows that tonight’s (Saturday’s) NASCAR Nationwide race in Iowa might be his best shot yet at a victory. But it’s not necessarily because Dillon is running so well. It’s mostly because Kyle Busch is staying at Pocono Raceway. Dillon, who took over the Nationwide points lead last week despite going winless through 19 starts, headlines a field almost exclusively made up of Nationwide regulars.

Brad Keselowski is the lone Sprint Cup driver scheduled to be in the field. NASCAR’s top series runs Sunday in Pennsylvania. Busch, who has won eight Nationwide races in 15 tries in 2013, won’t attempt the Pocono-Iowa double-dip like he’s done in the past.

Cardinals have another big game, drub Reds 13-3

Sports

August 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CINCINNATI (AP) — David Freese set the tone with a bases-loaded double in the first inning, and Daniel Descalso hit two of the Cardinals’ three homers on Friday night as St. Louis pulled away to a 13-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The Cardinals have emerged from a deep hitting slump by scoring 13 runs in each of their last two games. It’s the first time this season they’ve had double-digit run totals in consecutive games.

Shelby Miller (11-7) limited Cincinnati’s slumping offense to two singles over the first five innings before Joey Votto hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Bronson Arroyo (9-9) matched his season high by giving up seven runs in only 3 2-3 innings, his shortest outing of the season.
