Westbrook’s pitching, hitting lead Cardinals

Sports

July 20th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Jake Westbrook pitched 6 1-3 innings of two-run ball and contributed three hits, All-Star Matt Carpenter continued his strong season with three hits and three RBIs, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 9-6 on Friday night.

A career .116 hitter, Westbrook had never had more than one hit in a game. The right-hander, who scored twice and had an RBI, surpassed his hit output for the year with two singles and a double in his three at-bats. That raised his batting from .100 to .217.  On the mound, Westbrook (6-4) scattered eight hits while striking out one and walking four.

After rookie Carlos Martinez allowed three runs in the ninth to make it a three-run game, All-Star Edward Mujica got the last two outs to record his 27th save in 29 chances.

Team USA beats Cuba 2-1 in exhibition

Sports

July 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Matt Chapman had an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Team USA a 2-1 victory over Cuba on Thursday night in an international exhibition. The matchup was the opener of a five-game series between Cuba and a team of American college stars — and the first between the countries on American soil since 1996.

Cuba’s Jose Fernandez tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single with two outs in the ninth. But Chapman responded by ripping a line drive to right field with two outs in the 11th. Cuba, which lost pitcher Misael Siverio to defection on Tuesday, will play the U.S. in Omaha, Nebraska on Friday and Saturday before games in Cary and Durham, North Carolina next week.

Wainwright, rest of rotation gets extra rest

Sports

July 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals rotation is getting extra rest coming out of the All-Star break, including All-Star Adam Wainwright. Jake Westbrook starts tonight (Friday) against the San Diego Padres after an eight-day breather, followed by Lance Lynn and Wainwright, tied for the league lead with 12 wins. Wainwright jumped ahead of rookie Shelby Miller to get two starts before the break, and now he’ll be pitching on six days’ rest.

Lynn, an 11-game winner, gets six days rest. Miller got a week between starts to end the break so there’s a 13-day gap before his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Phillies. Wainwright leads the league with four complete games and 146 2-3 innings and is among the league leaders in ERA and strikeouts.

GULLANE, Scotland (AP) — Iowa native Zach Johnson takes a one-shot lead over 56-year old former British Open champ Mark O’Meara and Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello into today’s (Friday’s) second round at the British Open at Muirfield. Tom Lehman, Dustin Johnson and Brandt Snedeker are in a group two shots back.

Three-time British Open champ Tiger Woods shot a 2-under 69 to join a group that includes Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth, the 19-year-old who qualified for the major after scoring his first PGA Tour win last week in the John Deere Classic.

In other scores of note, defending champion Ernie Els shot a 74, Bubba Watson opened with a 70, Tom Watson and Fred Couples shot 75’s, and Nick Faldo and Rory McIlroy finished with 79’s.
