Wainwright moves Cards into first in NL Central

Sports

September 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright bounced back from back-to-back sub-par outings with seven shutout innings and David Freese homered to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.

The victory moved the Cardinals into first place, a half-game ahead of the Pirates in the NL Central with their third win in four games. Pittsburgh has lost four of six including the first two of the three-game set. The Pirates remain stuck on 81 wins, one shy of assuring them a winning record for the first time since they went 96-66 in 1992.

Wainwright (16-9) had given up 15 earned runs over his previous two starts, both against Cincinnati. He allowed a career-high nine runs in two innings of a 10-0 loss Aug. 28. But he regained his form against the Pirates allowing just two hits.

Jeff Locke (9-5) allowed three runs on three hits over five innings.

Early offense helps Northern Iowa past Drake 45-14

Sports

September 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — David Johnson eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the eighth consecutive game and Northern Iowa’s offense was too much for Drake in a 45-14 win on Saturday night. Northern Iowa (2-0) used 31 first-half points and a stingy defense to defeat Drake (0-2) a week after opening the season with a road victory against Iowa State. Johnson scored for the 11th consecutive game, producing 143 yards rushing and one touchdown on a 65-yard scamper to lead a balanced offensive attack for the Panthers.

Six Northern Iowa players scored a touchdown, including linebacker Jake Farley who recovered a fumble and returned it 20 yards to open the scoring for the Panthers. The Northern Iowa defense held Drake to 167 yards of total offense and the Bulldogs were just 1 of 16 on third-down conversions. Andy Rice passed for 121 yards and one touchdown to lead Drake.

Sports

September 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Ross Chastain took the pole Saturday night for the NASCAR Truck Series race Sunday at Iowa Speedway, edging Erik Jones for the top spot. Chastain had a lap at 137.147 mph in the No. 19 Ford owned by Sprint Cup driver Brad Keselowski on the 0.875-mile oval for his first pole in 36 series races.

Jones was second at 137.052, followed by James Buescher, Brendan Gaughan, Ty Dillon, July track winner Timothy Peters, Chase Elliott, Jeb Burton and defending race winner Ryan Blaney. Points leader Matt Crafton was 12th. Last week in the road race in Ontario, the 17-year-old Elliott wrecked Dillon in the last turn to win.

Iowa beats Missouri State 28-14

Sports

September 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jake Rudock and Mark Weisman each ran for a pair of touchdowns and Iowa beat Missouri State 28-14 on Saturday, snapping a seven-game losing streak dating back to 2012. Weisman had 180 yards rushing for the Hawkeyes (1-1), who prevailed despite a somewhat shaky performance against an FCS opponent.

Weisman scored on runs of 10 and 3 yards to help the Hawkeyes take a 21-0 lead late in the third quarter. Missouri State answered with touchdowns on back-to-back plays from scrimmage early in the fourth quarter, pulling within 21-14 with 14:15 to go.

Rudock’s 2-yard TD run put Iowa back ahead 28-14, and Tanner Miller sealed it with an interception in the end zone with 6:50 left. Kierra Harris threw for 127 yards and a TD for Missouri State (0-2).

Iowa St spared further penalties in NCAA case

Sports

September 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The NCAA has agreed with Iowa State’s self-imposed penalties following its investigation into impermissible calls and text messages. It will not impose additional restrictions on the Cyclones. Iowa State says the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions released its final report on the matter Friday. It says its findings were consistent with what the Cyclones reported nearly two years ago.

Iowa State made its internal investigation into NCAA recruiting violations public in April. The school found “a significant number” of unallowable calls and text messages made by coaches in football, men’s basketball and several other sports. The school’s self-imposed penalties included the forfeiture of a week of recruiting calls and a wide range of punitive actions against the coaches named in the report.
