Chiefs RB Charles leaves opener with quad injury

Sports

September 9th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has left the season opener against Jacksonville with a quadriceps injury.  Charles returned for two carries, but then headed to the sideline for good in the fourth quarter.  Charles was injured in the third period when he got sandwiched on a tackle between Jaguars linebackers Geno Hayes and Paul Posluszny.

He finished with 16 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 23 yards. His 2-yard TD run in the second put the Chiefs ahead 21-2.  Team trainers looked at Charles on the sideline, and then the running back got on a stationary bike for a few minutes before jogging into the locker room for further observation.

Chiefs score early, dominate Jaguars in 28-2 win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Alex Smith threw two early touchdown passes, Kansas City’s defense dominated all day and the Chiefs began the Andy Reid era with a 28-2 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jamaal Charles ran for 77 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with a quadriceps injury, but that was about the only negative for the Chiefs.

Jacksonville advanced past its own 36-yard line just once, a stunning display of offensive futility for the rebuilding franchise. The Jaguars finished with 178 yards, but for most of the game were challenging the team low of 117 yards set last year against Houston.

It wasn’t even close to the start the new coach Gus Bradley wanted, but it was a clear indication of how far the team has to go.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Michael Wacha pitched seven shutout innings and drove in two runs as the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2 Sunday for a three-game sweep. The Cardinals outscored Pittsburgh 26-10 overall in taking the NL Central lead.

The Pirates arrived at Busch Stadium this weekend with a 1½-game division lead and a chance to cement their first winning season since 1992. They left trailing the Cardinals by 1½ games and still stuck on 81 victories.

Wacha (3-0) allowed two hits and walked two, both of which were erased on double plays. He struck out two and never had more than one runner on at a time. Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton (7-4) left with discomfort in his left foot in the second inning. He allowed five runs on six hits and two walks in 1 2-3 innings.

Wainwright moves Cards into first in NL Central

Sports

September 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright bounced back from back-to-back sub-par outings with seven shutout innings and David Freese homered to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.

The victory moved the Cardinals into first place, a half-game ahead of the Pirates in the NL Central with their third win in four games. Pittsburgh has lost four of six including the first two of the three-game set. The Pirates remain stuck on 81 wins, one shy of assuring them a winning record for the first time since they went 96-66 in 1992.

Wainwright (16-9) had given up 15 earned runs over his previous two starts, both against Cincinnati. He allowed a career-high nine runs in two innings of a 10-0 loss Aug. 28. But he regained his form against the Pirates allowing just two hits.

Jeff Locke (9-5) allowed three runs on three hits over five innings.

Early offense helps Northern Iowa past Drake 45-14

Sports

September 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — David Johnson eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the eighth consecutive game and Northern Iowa’s offense was too much for Drake in a 45-14 win on Saturday night. Northern Iowa (2-0) used 31 first-half points and a stingy defense to defeat Drake (0-2) a week after opening the season with a road victory against Iowa State. Johnson scored for the 11th consecutive game, producing 143 yards rushing and one touchdown on a 65-yard scamper to lead a balanced offensive attack for the Panthers.

Six Northern Iowa players scored a touchdown, including linebacker Jake Farley who recovered a fumble and returned it 20 yards to open the scoring for the Panthers. The Northern Iowa defense held Drake to 167 yards of total offense and the Bulldogs were just 1 of 16 on third-down conversions. Andy Rice passed for 121 yards and one touchdown to lead Drake.

Sports

September 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Ross Chastain took the pole Saturday night for the NASCAR Truck Series race Sunday at Iowa Speedway, edging Erik Jones for the top spot. Chastain had a lap at 137.147 mph in the No. 19 Ford owned by Sprint Cup driver Brad Keselowski on the 0.875-mile oval for his first pole in 36 series races.

Jones was second at 137.052, followed by James Buescher, Brendan Gaughan, Ty Dillon, July track winner Timothy Peters, Chase Elliott, Jeb Burton and defending race winner Ryan Blaney. Points leader Matt Crafton was 12th. Last week in the road race in Ontario, the 17-year-old Elliott wrecked Dillon in the last turn to win.
