May 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Shelby Miller won his fourth straight start and Trevor Rosenthal induced a bases-loaded double play to end the game as the St. Louis Cardinals held off the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Sunday night. Allen Craig and Yadier Molina had two hits each, including RBI singles in a four-run first inning. Craig went 5-for-11 in the three-game series after entering with a .202 batting average. Molina was 0-for-12 in his previous four games.

Miller (5-2) walked four and allowed four hits in 5 1-3 innings, but held the Pirates to just two runs – which came on Jordy Mercer’s first home run of the season in the fourth inning. Rosenthal gave up a run in the ninth that made it 5-4, but got Mercer to hit into a 1-2-3 double play to end it.

Charlie Morton (0-5) took the loss.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pedro Alvarez singled in the go-ahead run and the Pittsburgh Pirates won their season-high fourth consecutive game Saturday night, 4-3 over the St. Louis Cardinals. Alvarez’s hit capped a four-run fourth inning against Lance Lynn (4-2) that helped the Pirates wipe out a 3-0 deficit.

Josh Harrison and Ike Davis each had two hits for the Pirates, who have won 11 of their last 14 games against the Cardinals in Pittsburgh. Harrison also hit an RBI single in the fourth. Jared Hughes (2-0) retired all four batters he faced in relief of starter Edinson Volquez. Mark Melancon earned his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.

Pirates outfielder Starling Marte was lifted for a pinch-hitter because of tightness in his lower back.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets loaded up on wide receivers on the final day of the NFL draft, taking Oklahoma’s Jalen Saunders, UCLA’s Shaquelle Evans and Nebraska’s Quincy Enunwa. Among the Jets’ other selections were Furman offensive lineman Dakota Dozier, Iowa State linebacker Jeremiah George, Northwest Missouri State cornerback Brandon Dixon, Louisiana Tech defensive end IK Enemkpali and Utah linebacker Trevor Reilly.

They also added another quarterback to the mix Saturday, selecting Clemson’s Tajh Boyd with the last of their three compensatory picks in the sixth round. While Geno Smith and Michael Vick will compete for the starting job this summer, Boyd will likely go up against Matt Simms for the No. 3 spot.

New York entered the final day with a league-high nine picks and used them all.

(Update) Chiefs turn to offense on final day of NFL draft

Sports

May 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs turned their attention to offense on the final day of the draft, choosing running back De’Anthony Thomas in the fourth round and quarterback Aaron Murray in the fifth round Saturday.

With two picks in the sixth round, the Chiefs added a pair of offensive linemen in Zach Fulton out of Tennessee and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif out of McGill, a school in Canada. Both of them will be able to provide depth for a unit depleted by free agency.

The Chiefs bolstered their defense the first two days of the draft, grabbing defensive end Dee Ford in Thursday night’s first round and defensive back Phillip Gaines in the third round Friday.

Kansas City did not have a seventh-round selection.

Chiefs take RB De’Anthony Thomas in 4th round

May 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs selected Oregon running back De’Anthony Thomas with their fourth-round pick Saturday, finally addressing the offense after spending their first two picks on defense. Thomas fits what coach Andy Reid likes in a running back. He possesses exceptional speed and quickness, and can catch the ball out of the backfield or line up as a wide receiver. He should be a replacement for departed wide receiver Dexter McCluster.

The Chiefs already have Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles and bruising Knile Davis on the roster. Davis was a third-round pick a year ago. The Chiefs picked Auburn defensive end Dee Ford in the first round Thursday night. They went with cornerback Phillip Gaines out of Rice with their lone pick on Friday.

Chiefs still on lookout for wide receiver help

Sports

May 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – After spending their first two picks on defense, the Kansas City Chiefs might finally turn their attention to helping their offense on the final day of the NFL draft. The Chiefs selected Auburn pass rusher Dee Ford in the first round Thursday night, and Rice defensive back Phillip Gaines in the third round, their lone pick on Friday night.

The biggest hole still remaining on the roster appears to be wide receiver, one of the deepest positions in the draft. But the Chiefs could also use depth along the offensive line after losing three players who started games last season to free agency.

Kansas City has four picks today (Saturday), the final day of the draft.
