ST. LOUIS (AP) – Khris Davis overcame striking out four times earlier in the game and came through with a run-scoring triple in the 12th inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Davis drove in Jonathan Lucroy, who doubled off Seth Maness to start the inning. Mark Reynolds then drove in Davis with a sacrifice fly. Davis, who finished 1 for 6, struck out in the second, fifth, sixth and 10th innings.

Zach Duke picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief, and Francisco Rodriguez recorded his 12th save in as many opportunities by getting Jhonny Peralta to fly out with two on to end the game. Milwaukee, which leads the majors with 19 wins, has won four of five and eight of 10.

Allen Craig and Matt Holliday homered for St. Louis, which has lost four of six.

April 28th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals have demoted struggling rookie Kolten Wong to the minors.
Wong, the starting second baseman to open the season, and reserve outfielder Shane Robinson were optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Rookies Greg Garcia and Randal Grichuk, both off to strong starts, were recalled from Memphis and are in the majors for the first time.

The 23-year-old Wong was batting .225 with five RBIs in 71 at-bats and didn’t play the last two games of a weekend series against Pittsburgh. Robinson was batting .100 with no RBIs in 20 at-bats. Mark Ellis will start at second base for the Cardinals.

Garcia was batting .267 at Memphis with a team-leading five home runs and three triples while starting at second base. Grichuk, acquired from the Angels last offseason, was batting .310 with a team-leading 17 RBIs and 16 runs and was hitting .421 with runners in scoring position.

Sports

April 27th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Adam Wainwright became the majors’ first five-game winner and Jhonny Peralta ended the St. Louis Cardinals’ 366 at-bat homerless drought with a pair of long balls and four RBIs in a 7-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

Matt Holliday, Allen Craig and Yadier Molina also had RBIs for the Cardinals, who totaled five runs in their previous four games. St. Louis took two of three from the Pirates, shutting them out in both wins.

Edinson Volquez (1-2) gave up six runs in 5 2-3 innings for Pittsburgh, which has dropped five of six. His day unraveled after the Pirates’ appeal of a potential double-play ball was denied and first baseman Ike Davis’ foot was ruled off the bag.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Gaby Sanchez had two RBIs in a four-run fourth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen worked seven strong innings after starter Francisco Liriano left with flu-like symptoms and dizziness in a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

Matt Holliday had an RBI double for the Cardinals, who have mustered five runs in their last six games. They got three hits and a run in seven innings off five Pittsburgh relievers.

Yadier Molina was a bust on his jersey giveaway day, striking out with the bases loaded to end the third against Stolmy Pimentel (2-0) and popping out with runners on second and third to end the fifth against Jared Hughes. He entered batting .431 during a 15-game hitting streak.

Tyler Lyons (0-2) took the loss.
