Selden leads No. 8 Kansas past No. 11 Iowa State 89-76

Sports

February 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Wayne Selden Jr. scored 19 points in a hot-shooting second half to spark No. 8 Kansas past No. 11 Iowa State 89-76 on Monday night. Selden, after missing all three of his shots and scoring only one point in the first half, drilled four of his first five 3-pointers after intermission, often finding himself virtually unguarded on the right wing, as the Jayhawks (19-3, 8-1 Big 12) padded their lead in the Big 12 race to 1½ games.

Georges Niang had 24 points for Iowa State (16-5, 6-3), which dropped out of a second-place tie with West Virginia. Leading 35-28 after a seesaw first half, the Jayhawks reeled off a 14-6 run the first 4 minutes, 45 seconds after intermission, with Selden scoring eight points, including two uncontested 3-pointers. Iowa State called time out and tried to regroup after Selden’s second 3-pointer put Kansas on top 49-34 but never got the lead under nine points.

Athletes taking a stand against domestic violence

News, Sports

February 2nd, 2015 by admin

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A group of athletes from Dakota Wesleyan University is challenging all the other male athletes in the Great Plains Athletic Conference to take a public stand against domestic violence. The Sioux City Journal reports the pledge idea began with a small group of students and a social justice class Luke Bamberg took.

Bamberg and four classmates decided to ask Dakota Wesleyan athletes to take the pledge. But the idea took off once Great Plains Athletic Conference Commissioner Corey Westra heard about it. So now the group is challenging the more than 2,500 male athletes at the conference’s 11 universities in South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa.

Bamberg acknowledges that signing a pledge may not make a huge difference, but he says it’s better than doing nothing.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Reed Timmer scored 18 points, Gary Ricks Junior added 14 and Drake beat Evansville 70-65 on Saturday in a contest that never saw more than a single-digit lead. The final 5 minutes included three lead changes, but seven-straight points put the Bulldogs up 60-53 with 1:33 to go. After Timmer split a pair of free throws for a six-point lead with 51 seconds left, the Purple Aces rebounded and Adam Wing missed a 3-point attempt. Evansville grabbed three offensive boards but missed all three shot attempts. Drake (6-16, 3-7 Missouri Valley) made 7 of 8 free throws in the final 25 seconds.
