CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have recalled outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa to take the roster spot that was held by productive rookie Kyle Schwarber. Szczur is in the starting lineup in left field for Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is beginning his fourth stint of the season with the Cubs, and has hit .167 with six RBIs in 23 games.
Schwarber was sent to Triple-A after driving in two runs during Chicago’s 8-0 win at Minnesota on Sunday. The 22-yearold catcher hit .364 with one homer and six RBIs in six games after making his big league debut.
The Cubs had called up Schwarber from Double-A Tennessee to primarily be the designated hitter during a string of interleague games at AL parks. He was the overall No. 4 pick in last year’s draft and will be making his first appearance at the Triple-A level.
As season ticket sales continue to drop Iowa officials are getting creative in hopes of filling Kinnick Stadium for the upcoming football season. The Hawkeyes will begin offering fans three game ticket packages today and Associate Athletic Director Rick Klatt says fans will be allowed to design their own three game plan.
As recently as 2011 Iowa sold out Kinnick Stadium for the entire season but season ticket sales for this season are expected to only reach 30 thousand. Klatt says if there is a silver lining it may be the opportunity to get new fans into the stadium.
A home schedule with no marquee opponents is a factor in the drop in season ticket sales but the biggest factor is fan dissatisfaction in a program that has declined in recent years and finished with a 7-6 record in 2014. The cost of the three game ticket package is 157 dollars. Iowa opens the season at home on September fifth against Illinois State.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Defending national champion Vanderbilt and Virginia will meet for the second straight year in the College World Series finals beginning Monday night at TD Ameritrade Park. The Commodores went 3-0 in bracket play. Virginia was 3-1, securing its spot in the finals with its 5-4 win over Florida on Saturday.
Virginia will be trying to win the Atlantic Coast Conference’s first national title in baseball since Wake Forest in 1955. The Cavaliers will send Connor Jones (7-2, 3.05 ERA) to the mound against Carson Fulmer (13-2, 1.95 ERA) in Game 1. Jones went six innings and got a no-decision in a 5-3 win over Arkansas on June 13. Fulmer pitched six innings against Cal State Fullerton on June 14 and got a no-decision in a 4-3 victory.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Adam Morgan won his major league debut in surprising style, outpitching Michael Wacha and leading the Philadelphia Phillies past the St. Louis Cardinals 9-2 Sunday. Winless in the minors this year, Morgan (1-0) allowed one run and six hits in 5 2-3 innings, striking six and walking two against the team with the best record in the majors.
The 25-year-old lefty had been 0-6 in 13 starts at Triple-A this season, and was 13-28 lifetime in the minors. He was called up before the game to pitch in place of Jerome Williams, who’s out with a strained left hamstring. Morgan snapped a 25-game stretch without a win for a Phillies starter dating to May 23, a string that stretched from Memorial Day to Father’s Day. Wacha (9-3) gave up five runs and eight innings in five innings.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kendrys Morales homered on his 32nd birthday and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4 Saturday night. Morales hit a two-run, tie-breaking shot in a five-run fifth off Rick Porcello. It was his third career homer on a birthday.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Aaron Brooks is joining the Kansas City Royals pitching staff and Yohan Pino is going back to the minors. Pino is optioned to Triple-A Omaha after going 5 1-3 innings Friday in a loss to Boston in his first big league start this season. Brooks, a 25-year-old right-hander, is making his third stint with the Royals.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer has tossed the second no-hitter in the majors this season to lead a 6-0 win over Pittsburgh. Scherzer was one strike from a perfect game until he hit Jose Tabata on the elbow with a pitch. The second shutout in Nationals history comes nine months after Jordan Zimmermann threw the first.
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — The start of the NASCAR Xfinity Series Allicat 300 was postponed by a thunderstorm Saturday night at Chicagoland Speedway. The race was rescheduled for 11 a.m. CDT today (Sunday). A storm hit the track about 50 minutes before the green flag. Austin Dillon is on the pole in a Chevrolet with a qualifying speed of 176.569 mph. He’s joined on the front row by Ross Kenseth, the 22-year-old son of the former Sprint Cup champion making his debut in a NASCAR-sanctioned race.
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) — Masters champion Jordan Spieth is among four players who share the lead through three rounds of the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. Spieth shot a 1-over 71 that leaves him 4-undeer for the tournament, tied with Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Branden Grace. Day shot the best round of the day among the leaders, a 2-under 68.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kenny Towns drove in three runs, including the winner in the seventh, and Josh Sborz pitched four innings of shutout relief as Virginia defeated Florida 5-4 on Saturday night to set up a College World Series finals rematch against Vanderbilt.
Virginia (42-23), which lost 10-5 to Florida on Friday, took two of three CWS games against the Gators (52-18) and now has won eight of its nine NCAA Tournament games. The Cavaliers open the best-of-three finals against a Vanderbilt team that beat them in three games for the championship last year.
It will be the first CWS finals rematch since Oregon State beat North Carolina in 2006-07. Sborz (6-2) ran his shutout innings streak to 23 since May 15, getting Richie Martin to ground out after Harrison Bader reached on a two-out single in the ninth. Danny Lewis (6-2) took the loss.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Randal Grichuk hit two home runs, doubled and drove in four runs, and John Lackey pitched seven strong innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 10-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night. Lackey (6-4) allowed one run on five hits to earn his first victory on the road this season away from Busch Stadium. He entered 0-3 with a 6.27 ERA in six road starts.
Jason Heyward had three hits with a double and two RBIs, Jhonny Peralta had three singles with an RBI, and Yadier Molina singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Cardinals, who won their seventh in nine games while beating Philadelphia for the fifth straight time. Cody Asche homered for the Phillies, who have lost 11 of 12. Aaron Harang (4-9) lost his sixth straight start for the first time in his career.
