Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard Statement on Hoiberg

Sports

June 3rd, 2015 by Jim Field

“On behalf of Iowa State University, I want to personally thank Fred (Hoiberg) for restoring a proud tradition to Cyclone men’s basketball. When Fred interviewed five years ago, he outlined a plan for how he would bring back the magic to Hilton Coliseum. He certainly delivered on that vision and has built a championship program in the process. We owe him our sincerest thanks.

Although Fred’s connections to Iowa State are evident on so many fronts, he has always expressed a desire to coach in the NBA if the right opportunity presented itself. We are happy that he’ll realize his personal dream and wish him success going forward.

We’re excited for the future of Iowa State basketball as we have an outstanding group of young men preparing for what should be another terrific season, and we embrace the opportunity to identify a new leader for the Cyclone men’s basketball program.

ISU President Steven Leath and I will conduct a national search for a new coach, and we are confident that our basketball program will continue on the upward trajectory it has established. We are energized to capitalize on the momentum of our program as we pursue a new coach at Iowa State.”

As in other coaching searches, the Iowa State Athletics Department will not have further comment on that process until a new coach is introduced.

Davis and Dwight named to Hall of Fame ballot

Sports

June 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Former Iowa State running back Troy Davis and former Iowa standout Tim Dwight have been named to College Football Hall of Fame ballot. Davis holds nearly every rushing record at ISU and was the first player in NCAA history to rush for more than two thousand yards in two seasons. He was a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist.

Dwight was a two time All American for the Hawkeyes as a receiver and kick returner. Also on the ballot is former Iowa defensive end Andre Tippett. He was part of Hayden Fry’s first Rose Bowl team that won the Big Ten title in 1981. The 2016 ballot includes 76 players and five coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The next Hall of Fame class will be announced January eighth in Scottsdale, Arizona as part of the College Football Playoff national championship weekend.

Derrick Johnson, Dontari Poe miss Chiefs offseason workout

Sports

June 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dontari Poe walked gingerly off the Chiefs’ practice field Tuesday with back pain, and linebacker Derrick Johnson sat out with inflammation in his knee. The Chiefs were getting back to work with the second week of organized team activities when Poe walked off the field. A team spokesman did not say how long he might be out.

Johnson worked out last week. He missed nearly all of last season with a torn Achilles tendon. Wide receiver Chris Conley was back on the field after missing time last week to attend the NFL’s rookie premier, while linebacker Justin Houston remained absent from the voluntary workouts after getting the franchise tag earlier this offseason.

Cardinals return favor, beat Brewers 1-0; Holliday ejected

Sports

June 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn allowed five hits while pitching into the eighth inning and Mark Reynolds had an RBI single in the second for the St. Louis Cardinals, who beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Tuesday night. Tyler Cravy (0-1) made an impressive major debut for Milwaukee, allowing a run on four hits in seven innings.

The Brewers won the series opener 1-0 and Milwaukee pitchers had thrown 19 consecutive scoreless innings before Reynolds’ RBI. Lynn (4-4) struck out five and walked one in 7 2-3 innings. Kevin Siegrist got the last out in the eighth and most of a sellout crowd of 42,835 stuck around to see Trevor Rosenthal earn his 16th save in 17 chances. The Cardinals are 6-2 with one game to go on the home stand.

Matt Holliday of the St. Louis Cardinals was ejected for arguing a called third strike in the seventh inning, ensuring the end of his National League-record 45-game streak reaching base safely to start the season. Home plate umpire Joe West also tossed manager Mike Matheny, who had gone out to aid Holliday’s cause, on Tuesday night in a game the Cardinals led 1-0 against the Brewers.

Holliday’s streak was the longest in the majors since Derek Jeter’s major league-record run of 53 in a row in 1999 for the Yankees. It was Holliday’s fourth career ejection and the ninth career ejection for Matheny, and first this season.

Chicago Bulls introduce Fred Hoiberg as new coach

Sports

June 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Bulls made it official Tuesday, hiring Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg to replace Tom Thibodeau. Hoiberg was long rumored as the replacement for Thibodeau, who was fired last week after five seasons.

Hoiberg went 115-56 with the Cyclones, including four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles. He had open-heart surgery in April.

He takes over a team that entered the season eyeing a championship with the return of Derrick Rose from another knee surgery and the signing of Pau Gasol last summer. The Bulls came up short, struggling through injuries in a 50-win regular season and lost to LeBron James and the banged-up Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
