Gators’ 11-run inning ties record, fuels 15-3 win over Miami

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Florida scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to tie a College World Series record, and defeated Miami 15-3 on Saturday night, the Hurricanes’ most lopsided loss in their long and proud postseason history. The Gators’ outburst broke open a surprisingly sloppy game and ended with Florida having turned a 2-1 deficit into a 10-run lead on nine hits off Andrew Suarez and two relievers.

Florida (50-16) advanced to a Bracket 1 winners game against Virginia on Monday night. Miami (49-16) and Arkansas will play an elimination game that afternoon. Logan Shore (10-6) scattered seven hits and struck out six in five innings for the win. Suarez (9-2) took the loss in a 3 1/3-inning outing that matched his second shortest of the season.

Bullpen finishes off Cardinals’ 3-2 win over Royals

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Call-up Tyler Lyons had a solid outing and Mark Reynolds hit the go-ahead homer in the fifth inning for the St. Louis Cardinals, who beat the Kansas City Royals for the second straight day, 3-2 on Saturday. Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez homered for the Royals, who took two of three from the Cardinals at home last month and will be trying to avoid a sweep in the finale.

Matt Carpenter and Jason Heyward each added an RBI for St. Louis, which is a major league-best 41-21 overall and 24-7 at home. The Cardinals used five relievers over the last four innings to hold a one-run lead with Trevor Rosenthal getting the last four outs for his league-leading 21st save in 22 chances.

The Royals’ eighth did not lack for dramatics. Heyward battled the sun to snare Kendrys Morales’ liner while falling on his backside and Rosenthal rallied from a 3-0 count to get Gordon on an infield popup with two on for the third out.

OMAHA, Neb. Ernie Clement added a run-scoring single in the ninth for Virginia (40-22), which scored all five of its runs with two outs. The Cavaliers, a No. 3 regional seed and the lowest seed to make it to Omaha, improved to 6-0 in the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas (40-24) tied it at 3 in the fifth on Andrew Benintendi’s nation-leading 20th home run.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Miami and Florida are meeting at the College World Series for the first time tonight (Saturday night) in what will be their 242nd all-time meeting. The Hurricanes (49-15) are back in Omaha for the 24th time and first since 2008. The Gators (46-19) are at the CWS for the ninth time, the fourth since 2010.

Neither team has played a non-conference opponent more often. Florida leads the series 127-113-1 and has won 19 of the last 24, including two of three in February in Gainesville. Virginia (39-22) plays Arkansas (40-23) in the Bracket 1 opener this afternoon. Bracket 2 games Sunday pit TCU (49-13) against LSU (53-10) in the afternoon and Cal State Fullerton (39-23) against defending national champion Vanderbilt (47-19) at night.

Garcia dominates, Cardinals beat Royals 4-0

Sports

June 13th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaime Garcia pitched eight innings of four-hit ball and helped himself with an RBI single for the St. Louis Cardinals, who ended the Kansas City Royals’ four-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory in the opener of a high-profile weekend interleague series on Friday night. Jon Jay snapped a 2-for-24 slump this month with a two-out RBI triple in the second off Yordano Ventura (3-6), and Garcia followed with his 12th career RBI on an opposite-field single to left.

The Cardinals are 40-21 overall and 23-7 at home, both major league bests. They got a huge outing from Garcia (2-3), so far a success story off thoracic outlet surgery. Ventura lasted just three innings for the second straight start, removed as a precaution due to weakness in his pitching hand. In those two starts, he’s allowed six earned runs.

UI officials: “mistake” sending Herky to Ernst’s Roast & Ride

News, Sports

June 12th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

University of Iowa officials say it was a mistake for the school’s mascot to appear at a fundraiser earlier this month featuring several Republican presidential candidates.Herky UI spokesperson Jeneane Beck told KCRG-TV that the school’s spirit squad agreed to send Herky to U.S. Senator Joni Ernst’s Roast and Ride not realizing it was a partisan event. “It was billed as an event, a motorcycle ride for veterans and heroes, that’s the way it was written. There was no ill intent on either side, it was just a mistake,” Beck said.

The event started with a motorcycle ride from a Harley-Davidson dealership in Des Moines to a barbecue in Boone. Herky and Cy, the mascot for Iowa State University, were both paid to appear at the event in Boone. The mascots posed for photos with attendees. ISU spokeswoman Annette Hacker said the athletic department will be reviewing its policy on which events Cy can attend after criticism following the Boone fundraiser.
